What happens when the most important parts of your life come into conflict? When Evangelical Christian mom Susan Cottrell’s daughter came out, she faced an impossible choice: her LGBTQ child or her non-affirming church. In this heartwarming talk, Susan explains why she chose her LGBTQ child and how she fights for progress inside the Christian Church. Susan Cottrell is a prominent voice for faith parents of LGBTQI children. She is an international speaker, acclaimed author, and public theologian with a Masters in Theological Studies. After spending 25 years in the Evangelical church, she founded FreedHearts to champion the LGBTQI community and their families. She served as the Vice-President of PFLAG Austin (Texas) and was endorsed by The Human Rights Campaign and The Gay Christian Network. She has five children, two of whom are in the LGBTQI community, with her husband of 30 years, Rob. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

@moth eater That is simplistic at best. "Shame and shun" isn't a Scriptural model, except in the most dire of corporate eventualities. It is admitting a defeat of God (God is Love). But the problem is our model of "Love" is also broken unto thinking it's just the placation of short-term urges. (Which then cycles back on itself and hypothetically could create what has been likened to the descending spiral of sin whereby the love of a person over time is confused with the love of not having to deal with one's own negative emotions in this moment).

I was outed by my cousin when i was 14. My grandma called me in a panic, seeming so distraught by the news that I might be a boy. She talked to my parents and they sat me down to talk. My parents said hurtful things and when I ran upstairs to hide, my dad told me he didn't want to see me in the house in the morning. This woman is who so many people in the community need. Acceptance can be hard but in the end, parental love needs to win.

I'm sorry for what happened to you. I honestly cannot comprehend such treatment from some parents. If I had a family member in this type of situation, I'd gladly tag along because I'd never abandon a loved one. I want to dedicate my life to helping others because I've gotten fed up with so many cruel people. I'm trying to reach for my life goal of raising an organization where I could build places for those who are kicked out of their homes to give them a place to stay where they are well received and somehow help them reach their life goals as a bonus. People could be so cruel but know there are people who genuinely care about you. And though I'm a stranger on the internet, my heart goes out to you and to all people who deserve to be accepted for who they are. You are worth something. I wish well to you all , the happiness you all deserve. Never let anyone stop you from living a happy life. There is saying that says like a dollar bill, no matter how much people try to crush you, your value doesn't change. The fact that your able to get through this despite the tears and the struggles, makes you an admirable person. Your are valued and people are fighting for you guys so people can learn to be more accepting. Love will win because love conquers all.

Believe me that is not the Jesus that came to save. They serve a different God. They are the ones committing the unforgivable sin by regecting gods grace and pushing people away. I’m sorry that you feel that some of Gods works are lesser than others but God made me the way I am and I’m not going to try and change his work as if I know better than him. That's not who he is. He is a ever loving entity who understands his child 's heart , it's inner turmoil and it's intentions. He stands with you even if the whole world turns against you as long as you don't mean any harm. ( God can't be described as a he/she. I just said 'he' for the conversation) . Regardless of religious beliefs, nobody should have kids if they're bigots or have beliefs that one population of people deserve less rights than another. Christianity doesn't ask you to hate. It commands you to love one another DESPITE differences. The only thing God hates is sin. He wants better for the mom in the video and for her daughter. He wants them both to reject sin and repent and ask Him for forgiveness, which He will freely give. If you by chance are calling that 'hate' (I'm not saying you are, but you seem to possibly be leaning that way?), then you don't know the nature of God or what Christianity really is.

Exactly. I am a 100% sold out for Jesus Bible believing Christian. I would have no problem having Jesus the Master of my life and also loving my child in their sin. My parents loved me in my sin before I became a Christian, and Jesus died for me "while I was yet a sinner." Also, the church I attend would not tell any parent to walk away from their child, nor would it pretend that sin isn't sin and doesn't need to be repented of and dealt with accordingly.

Not necessarily. Sometimes we all need to be told that we are wrong. Because the fact is that sometimes we ARE wrong. And if someone really loves you, they will not enable a harmful lifestyle for instance. They will tell you the truth to set you free. Now in the context of homosexuality, parents should by all means love their children, not harm them or put them out of the house to be in harms way but tell them that that lifestyle is wrong in the site of God and they need to reprent from it.
