What do you think would be other marginal gains worth about 1 watt? Also, guys with power meters....... please contribute to our new survey on your power (FTP test) according to your position on the bike: fft.tips/positionform

I made a number of various optimizations, the big one going from a -6 stem with 15mm of spacers to a - 17 with no spacers, and a 40cm round handlebar to 36cmm slightly aero profile handlebar. Also went from bibs and a race cut jersey to a very tight fit trisuit. Also swapped 35mm deep semi aero wheelset for a 45mm aero one. Butyl tubed GP5000s to TLR Vittoria Corsa Speed tires, lots of small changes here and there over the years. It adds up. The end result was that on one of my longer flat-ish segments which is about 50km long, with roughly the same air temperature and neutral wind, in 2019 it took me 233W average to go 33.6 km/hr. Recently I was doing a long tempo ride and averaged on the same segment 33.5 km/hr with 197W. That's a huge difference.

5:50 Thank you for your work, appreciate the posting of this info. However, front rim brakes - if you are not spinning the front wheel in the wind tunnel test, then an aero looking brakes offer less resistance. But spinning the wheel in the 25 mph range, the late Steve Hed found in his wind tunnel testing for different frame manufacturers creates so much turbulent 'dirty air', from the top of the tire spinning, it really didn't matter what the shape of the brake caliper was, so aero brakes were purely cosmetic, not truly functional. Just my 2 cents.

8 ot of 10 implementing the 80/20% rule 20% of costs and 80% of the savings.. Just be smart when choosing in the first place though there are a lot more small gains to be had, Speedplay shoe+ aero cover/cleats Shoe covers The shoe you choose (i.e. is the shoe / all components aero or bulky) valve covers from silca etc.

They only downside is the ridiculous price (uk.crankbrothers.com/products/eggbeater-11?region=GB)

Great tech details as always and very helpfull videos :) That is interesting cables exposed are such small amount of power lost? However more interesting is how much we can gain by throwing away bidon on flats at lets say 40kph? Some of those aero bidons looks aero fancy, but in many cases we do not need them at short TT events lets say 20km ITT, so I gues it might be more than 1W saving or maybe I'm wrong? Putting bidon back after saddle not great idea since we can loos a few seconds trying to reach this bidon, so it looks like the best option if not banned by UCI could be dring pipe to bidon hidden in bike aero frame, so that is why I'm working now on such solution...
@Fastfitnesstips

I should have made clear its 1 watt per individual 10cm cable...so a jumble of cables soon adds up. Yes I like your bidon/bottle idea.....borrowing from triathlon

Are aero gains even taken into account without a direct head wind?
@Fastfitnesstips
@Fastfitnesstips 5 жыл бұрын
Yes without a headwind your apparent wind speed is the same as your road speed. With a head wind then the aero gains are higher (unless you slow down accordingly)
@albr4
@albr4 5 жыл бұрын
wind tunnel tests are set at the speed that the bike would be going at, no wind at all, so these aero wattage gains calculated from wind tunnels are the numbers you would get without any wind. (I think) If you're travelling at 30 kph and theres a 30 kph headwind you would get a bigger wattage saving than what manufacturers tell you, since the speed the wind is hitting the bike at is like 60kph (I think). If you had a tail wind of 30kph and you were travelling at 40 kph then you would have a 10kph wind speed as it hits the front of your bike. There wouldn't be much point of aero testing a stationary bike...

Mechanical watts? You can have all of the FFT top 10, with shitty bearings in your hubs and drive train you can minus how many watts?? The chain was touched on but hub bearings, freewheel bearings and BB bearings all take your hard earned watts too. More than you think and more than some of the industry will tell you.
