Funny, I’ve always loved Face Dances, although I acknowledge it’s not the greatest selection of songs. You Better You Bet, Another Tricky Day, and Don’t Let Go the Coat are my favorites… plus Daltry turns in a freaking EXCELLENT vocal performance across this whole record despite not liking the material very much and having the same beef with Townshend that you do about keeping his best songs for solo material. Some of it is hilarious, too, like the way he belts out “And I look pretty CRAPPY sometimes” in YBYB. God I love that.

Great video but i will defend most of these albums. Islands is a top 3 Band album for me. Saga of Pepote Rouge is a killer song and the cover of Georgia on my Mind brings me to tears. 15 Big Ones isn't a great album but it still has some stellar tracks. It's O.K. is one of their best singles , Had to Phone Ya is a wonderful Brian song and the last 2 songs are a wonderful closer to the album. As for Face Dances I haven't dived much into The Who's earlier albums from the 60's but I always put this album on when i want to listen to them. It flows together perfectly and never jolts you out of the album For a while there I didn't even know that the album ended with Another Tricky Day until I listened to the LP because the bonus studio tracks fit it amazingly. Love your content Maslov and have a wonderful day!
@drummer784 ай бұрын
Islands is an excellent record. The only reason it gets dogged on is that it was a contractual album done out of necessity and the stuffy critics were expecting”Music from Big Pink or another Brown Album. Islands has much more production flourish and Garth layers it with all sort of synths/keys…it’s a Band album as they were in 1977. The songs and performances are great too. I think people need to get over these tropes about certain supposed “bad” albums.

Great video Mazzy. I'm a mexican fan of your videos. The Broad Street movie was not good, I agree, even though it works as separate music videos. But the "Give My Regards To Broad Street" Album is great! Not one of his best, but a great album to listen to. It got to #1 in the UK at the time. I really enjoy the Beatles songs he plays (with Ringo and George Martin) and the new songs were great, not only No More Lonely Nights, but also No Values and Not Such a Bad Boy, which are great rockers in the McCartney catalog. Eleanor's Dream was an early taste of the classical music he would do in the 90s. By the way you can find the complete version only in the cassette and the CD, not in the vinyl record version which was severly edited in various songs. I still love the "Give My Regards To Broad Street" Album.

I think it has some good tracks and some not so great, the production holds it back imo. There's some great outtakes that should have been on the album. I also made myself an all Pete version when I realized the Scoop demo comp series covered nearly all the Face Dances album and bootlegs filled in the gaps and I like that better.

If you compiled the best tracks from "Face Dances" and "It's Hard", you'd have a pretty good Who album.

I like “Face Dances” quite a bit. The songs are mostly very strong…”Another Tricky Day”, “You Better You Better You Bet”, “The Quiet One”. It may have been even better with an “Empty Glass” tune thrown in there too. Anyway, FD is a good album…it’s production maybe could use a bit more heft but it’s an album worth checking out. He is correct, the cover of the album is excellent.
@moonbeamskies33464 ай бұрын
My memory is Face Dances was forgotten almost immediately after release except by MTV which played the three videos from that album in regular rotation through 1982. On the other hand, the Rolling Stones 1981 album Tattoo You was a big hit and was all the rage for many months.
@drummer784 ай бұрын
@@moonbeamskies3346 “You Better You Bet” got a lot of radio airplay. It was Number 1 on the Billboard mainstream rock chart and Number 18 on Billboard’s Hot 100 (which was the record industry standard for all songs played on radio…I believe that meant all formats). The album itself peaked at No. 4 on the US Billboard Top LPs & Tape chart and No. 2 on the UK Albums Chart. I’d say it was pretty successful. Now, the band didn’t do a massive US tour like the Stones did for “Tattoo You”. The Who toured the UK and Europe at the start of 1981 but that was it.

Quite a funny approach. Exlplaining why some albums are rubbish altough possessing them. It could have happened with my collection as well, as the records are from so many different sources and you don't feel you should get rid of them. Of the ten albums you showcased, I have got only one, i.e. Fleetwood Mac's Tango In The Night. I also don't like the sound, but still some songs.

Agree on Fifteen Big Ones - and that did refer to their 15th year as a band (beginning Labor Day 1961) It was that post Endless Summer/Spirit of America time - the two BIG selling oldies compilations - so they did their own covers here and a few originals. I did buy it when it came out and wasn't crazy about it either. But the sound was well done - and produced by Brian Wilson.

I am a big Jefferson Airplane fan. Long John Silver is an embarrassment. Jorma's song Trial By Fire was okay. Even the LP Bark was on shaky ground but was passible. Both Kantner/Slick and Hot Tuna faired pretty well individually during this period (1972 I believe.)

Long john silver is their second best album( Crown of creation is their best). The 1989 s/t is good. Also 'Takes off' has 3 great songs on it,two of them covers. Bark is terrible apart from the first track.

I knew the man who co-wrote the song-'Good Lovin'-and he loved The Grateful Dead's version of it. At the time he told me this, we were sitting at the table with the man who did the Fleetwood Mac 'Rumours' album cover. Whether he also did the 'Tango In The Night' album cover, I don't know. I'll have to look that up.

I used to have "Procol's Ninth," but my copy didn't come in a gatefold sleeve. I didn't think much of the album except for "Pandora's Box," which was a top-20 hit in the U.K. I like the singles from "Tango in the Night," especially "Big Love," which I never hear on oldies stations. I like the B-side--"You and I Pt. 1"--even better, but it wasn't on the album.

I must say I agree with you and don't own these albums except for the Who's album which I bought second hand. I went to see that McCartney movie at the theater but don't remember seeing it after. It's almost as insignificant as the Sergeant Pepper Lonely Hearts Club Band movie which came out in the 70's. I also agree about the Procol Harum's album live in Edmonton being a good one. Being from the Montreal, Canada area, the Beach Boys album cover is pretty obvious as we had the Olympics in 1976. And finally, I think a lot of older bands sold their souls in the 80's trying to sound new and in tune with the current music being produced but that ended up being a sad period for most of them.

I'm very nostalgic for 15 Big Ones as it was my 1st Beach Boys LP and I can have a good time with it if I'm in the right mood for it. The covers are pretty weak (especially "In the Still of the Night") but I love some of the originals like "It's OK" and "Had to Phone You." Of course, the album went through several stages of developmental hell so (like all of their 1976-80 albums), it feels pretty scrambled and unfocused. Not my pick for their worst one, but I totally get the hate for it. Awesome collection!
