Hey Docs, my husband had a lateral release 3 years ago at the age of 20, and was sent to PT but communication from the hospital to the PT center was not clear and they thought he only had a knee scope (was the original plan.) So he was doing some very intense exercises that ended up causing severe inflammation, his knee got red and splotchy, and very warm. He was told by his surgeon to keep weight off of it for as long as possible. As a 20 year old at the time, just sitting on the couch doing nothing was getting very frustrating especially since the pain was not going away. He ended up going to the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota and they said his quad muscles were atrophying due to no exersice. They essentially re taught him how to walk and gave some good tips. But 3 years later, my husband still has trouble with his knee swelling, very hard time with stairs, and just wants to be the active person he once was. Do you have any tips?

Keri Murphy my husband also had a lateral release, when he was just supposed to get. Knee scope. He was 20 at the time and he has never been the same. He had to re-learn to walk again. Surgeons at the Mayo Clinic told us that doctors don't do those anymore because they are not proven to work. Trying to find some help for him.
@KerisCorner6 жыл бұрын
In my research after my surgery, I've seen the same thing. The surgery doesn't really have a great track record. Wish I would of never had it done. Ugh, that sounds terrible about your husband! Has PT helped at all for him?
@justforthelulz936 жыл бұрын
Keri Murphy yes and no. His first round of PT right after the surgery was terrible because his surgeon did not communicate with the PT center and they thought he had only had a knee scope done so it was wayyy too intense of exercise for him. Left him in severe pain, incredibly swollen knee, it had a fever, and was red & splotchy. His doctor told him to rest and do not put weight on it. When he went to the Mayo Clinic they were livid with his surgeon and said that his leg muscle was atrophying because it wasn't being worked out. Which is true, he cannot flex his left quad anymore. But the second PT place he went to was wonderful, they eventually just gave him at home exercises to do, and then he found a great personal trainer who is helping his strengthen his leg. For a while he was very depressed with his situation but it's been in recent months that he finally has the mentality that he is not his injury, and sure it's going to hurt, but he is going to work through it. He recently ran a short distance, he said it was uncomfortable, but mostly weird because he had forgotten how to run. The most major thing right now is that he has worse arthritis in that knee than before, and we live in Oklahoma, so weather & pressure changes are almost a daily occurrence so it really affects it.

Hey, you guys! My mother had both knees replaced 3 years ago. Unfortunately, she didn't do the exercises prescribed for her as attentively as she should have and now her knees are VERY stiff! And painful! Can you guys recommend anything that I can help her do to improve her knees? She's starting chemo soon and if she could feel a little better before that starts it'd be great! Thanks in advance!

If, hypothetically, you had a patient that presented with moderate gonarthrosis, decreased joint spaces with major involvement of the medial, misalignment of the femorotibial eye, periarticular calcifications, retropatellar chondromalacia, prominent tibial spines, would you recommend a knee brace or a knee sleeve? Or only exercise? What type of knee brace or sleeve should the person buy if you recommend them. Many thanks for your help and wisdom. Happy Holidays!

The more people I talk to who have had lateral releases, the more I learn it generally makes things worse. I went in for a scope surgery to clean up a meniscus tear, but they did a lateral release instead. The resulting pain is horrible, my leg is weak and unstable, my knee isn't tracking correctly (and it was fine), and my knee pain is the same if not worse. I have since discussed this with numerous knee surgeons and this seems to be a common way of dealing with many types of knee problems. If lateral releases are causing more harm than good why on earth do they keep doing this to people? There is a FB page on this topic - but I don't do FB. Thanx guys for all the great exercises to help us old folks stay mobile!! But I gotta know: How do you mend a broken heart??!!

@@TheMarleeray I went to the doctor she prescribed me, quality shoes, two pain killers and exercises, I do lots of stairs and walks, the more you strengthen the muscles of your legs the more the pain in the knee will diminish or completely go away.

If I had surgery for acl and mcl and don’t have full range of flexion? Should I be worried about it? I run cross country and I’ve been careful increasing mileage and my knee had started hurting at the beginning of the week? Could it possibly be a minuses re tear? Because of the ponding and running up hills is also painful

Ok, you had me at 'avoid knee surgery'. I had a big fall this summer and have had trouble with my knee and now foot on that leg since. No, I didn't go to the doctor. (Also had trouble with my surgical shoulder from that fall so that was more worrying.) Yup...shame, shame. Three months later now with trouble still (middle aged, non-athletic) I think I should probably have gotten treatment. (Duh?) Stairs, no trouble but I absolutely cannot bear any weight on the injured knee while kneeling (like at the top of the tibia). But really, who wants to waste medical professional's time being a patient who doesn't take proper care of their body? At any rate, I'll keep all your info in mind. BTW, have you got any info on 'phantom' deep-bruising of the top of the instep of the foot? (Lol!)

This should be named ways to test if you have knee issues. The video is too long and could've been more concise on the exact tips and exercises for knee pain instead of all the ways to tell if you have knee pain..

Actually if you paid attention, they go through several exercises to strengthen knees and hamstrings, but they always stress the limits to respect if you have pain. Maybe this is what confused you.
@brendastolecki47556 жыл бұрын
I agree. Just take what is helpful to you. BUT, they DID give exercises, go back and rewatch it. They try to cover all the bases.
