In order to hit smoother, faster and more controlled groundstrokes you need to learn to use the whole body and generate force from the ground up. This video will explain the most efficient way to swing using every segment of the body in a sequential fashion.

Fantastic. This guys videos are the best. This has got be the most overlooked concept in tennis. This guy explains it better than anyone and most "experts" don't even mention it.

Thanks Edgar, visualizing the uncoiling spring when hitting my forehand made a big difference. at first I didn't worry about anything else when hitting he ball other than acting like a spring uncoiling and that alone made a difference. Somehow everything else fell in place. But I need to practice much more to be able to do this in matches, when fear of losing a point restricts the natural flow of the strokes. Would love it if you can offer advise of how to overcome this fear. Best,

Glad you found it useful! When playing a match it is difficult to focus on technique. That is why you feel insecure. You have to practice until it becomes automatic. Then you will feel more comfortable. Goof luck

In reality these are complex movements requiring lots of practice and guidance from a skilful coach. The wrist action alone causes most rec players many problems. Perhaps you can do a video on this with practice tips. Good videos Edgar. 👍

The way I use to get that sequenced correctly is to remember it's the same kinetic chain as skimming a stone only with a much bigger follow thru. That will get you to naturally do the correct thing with wrist lag and pronation. It also sequences the elbow correctly (missed out in video above), and teaches you what "relaxed" means in that everything should stay relaxed until transferal of force reaches that joint at which point it stops being relaxed and is engaged.

@@NamesAreRandom Thanks for analogy. I interestingly have heard it referenced over the years. I used to be good at skimming stones as a kid. However, the coaches I've associated with and seen never referenced it and taught different mechanics, like the Vic Braden ferris wheel 🎡 FH which is nothing like skimming a stone. Just wondering what your thoughts are on wrist flexibility and using these mechanics. Does your wrist have a lot of extension flexibility, (ability to lay back wrist)? How important do you feel this joint flexibility is to racket head speed? My wrist is very tight in extension, maybe 40°, significantly less than most people. I'm okay with flexion, forward bend.

@poida smith Well the wrist is relaxed until the end so the racket will lag and then engage at the end. I suppose if you are less flexible it will lag a bit less so you will get a little less racket head speed. The other thing that lay back flexibility is important for is getting a stable racket head at contact so the force of the impact goes more up your arm and the racket head doesn't get deflected backwards - that position is a mixture of the grip you use and having the wrist laid back. If you can't lay back the wrist as far that might be more challenging to achieve. I don't suppose either of them change no matter what mechanic you are taught as long as you contact with the racket in front which is what I would expect all coaches to coach. I recommend checking out "Feel Tennis Instruction" on youtube, he is very helpful, "TPA tennis" is also good for getting you thinking about the kinetic chain on forehands.

@@NamesAreRandom Thanks, agree that the layback is very important for both RHS and stability at contact regardless of mechanics. When I think of skipping a stone, I think of actively using my wrist a the end, not sure the same thing happens with a FH.

Jeez if one loads that low the ball will pass by the time one uncoils.
