Cobra Kai Theory

Cobra Kai Theory

3 жыл бұрын

Terry Silver and John Kreese of Cobra Kai Dojo served their time for their country. Who was the Karate teacher in Okinawa for Americans? Sato!
We see this in Karate Kid 2, where Sato was breaking the log in the poster at the airport, where Mr. Miyagi and Daniel LaRusso stop to look at it.
My Cobra Kai Theory is that Sato had at some point, trained Terry Silver and Kreese, who either took their teachings and turned it into Cobra Kai, or used the already established Cobra Kai to embelish their Karate with Sato during their service.
In The Karate Kid 1984, we see Daniel walk into Cobra Kai and on the wall hangs a portrait of John Kreese, Captain of US Army and the Karate Champion from 70-72.
Kreese and Silver fought in the war together, is it possible that they passed through Okinawa like hundreds of thousands of others? Is it possible that, being a Karate Champion during the war, could they not have come in close contact with Sato, THE Karate trainer of Americans?
I think there could be an interesting connection here that would make for an interesting connection.
I would love to see something like it!

The theory has merit, but you are forgetting one AGAINST factor. There were more than just one person hired for instructing people in the US Military. It is indeed possible, yes, dont get me wrong. This is an interesting theory, but I do think it might be a stretch. Also, I wouldn't like it, because they are then shrinking the world of Karate Kid and Cobra Kai instead of expanding it.

DISHOL Nah, it doesn’t add up. The crane kick that defeated Jonny in KK1 was a Miyagi family thing, which is why Chozen didn’t fall for it in KK2, as Sato had taught it to Chozen so he could counter it. Therefore Sato would have taught it to Creese and Silver and therefore Creese would have taught it to Jonny. The fact that Creese and Jonny has never seen it makes me believe Sato didn’t train Creese.

Also, and someone may have already told you oh, so forgive me if I'm just repeating somebody else's correction, but Miyagi and Daniel went to Okinawa in 1985, despite the Karate Kid 2 being a 1986 film, they left for Okinawa only 6 months following the 1984 all Valley tournament. The Karate Kid 3, took place in 1985 as well and it was the 1985 all Valley tournament that Daniel faced Mike Barnes. This was even specifically pointed out in Cobra Kai season 1.

There was a reference that Kreese's style was Tang Soo Do (Korean style translating to Way of the China Hand). When Silver said that his & Kreese's teacher (in either Tang Soo Do, Tae Kwon Do or Hapkido) was Korean, it's believable. Silver was fond of kicking which is a trait of Korean martial arts. In reality, the actor holds a black belt in Tae Kwon Do. Although cross-training martial arts during the war may have been possible, a reason to disregard Sato as their teacher is that his style was Okinawan Goju-Ryu which is a style that does not use kicks to the degree that Silver used them. Goju-Ryu tends to use more hand techniques and applies fewer basic, non-flashy kicks. Again, more kicking is what differentiates Korean martial arts from Okinawan Karate. Besides, his hand techniques did not resemble Goju-Ryu. So I believe Silver's teacher/Sabumnim was Korean.

Miyagi's style is based in circular movements. Cobra's is linear and direct. But, I guess writers could walk around and say that Sato taught a militarized version of it.
@rumblefish9
@rumblefish9 3 жыл бұрын
The whole concept is reflective of karate itself. Karate originated in Okinawa is as far away from Japanese Karate like Shotokan which then influenced Tang Soo Do. Japanese Karate is much more focus on how the techniques are executed rather than why they're done. In Okinawa, karate is a way of life. Japanese Karate is an artform. The difference happened when the practice was taken out of Okinawa.

This is exactly what I was going to say. . Miyagi is a soft circular style. Cobra Kai is a hard linear style. They bear zero resemblance. If Sato and Miyagi were taught the same style, their subsequent styles could be altered, but wouldn't likely do so significantly. So Sato teaching Kreese and Silver would be another alteration but not likely to be as different of a style as Cobra Kai is from Miyagi-do. Also karate isn't a natural Korean martial art. If Silver and Kreese learned from a master in South Korea it would be far more likely they learned Taekwondo or Tang Soo Do. Rewatching KK3, Silver is more leg focused which leads me to think maybe he did learn Taekwondo instead (TKD is very similar to Karate but has a definitive focus on kicking as opposed to hand strikes or being well rounded as Karate is). in this Cobra Kai isn't even the same style that Terry Silver exhibits in the Karate Kid 3. From every thing I've seen what Silver practices is different from what Kreese practices which is different from the style Johnny practices which is very far removes from the style Chozen, Daniel and Miyagi practice. This linking of the two style would be amazing, but I don't think them originating from the same source is feasible.. Better if Daniel and Johnny combine their styles together and create a new one.

I've been saying this since day one I also think that Miagi's father taught both of them but Sato took the darker more violent version and Miyagi took the light more defensive version. Everything comes full circle and with the two combined one learns to be a confident badass (Cobra Kai) but how to harness the badassery and maintain complete balance (Miyagi-do). Its basically the philosophy of Jung wrapped up in a TV show one cannot know their true self until they know their shadow. Harnessing that shadow is not as simple as ignoring it that just makes it stronger, you need to know your shadow and how to use it so it can stay placated.

I think Terry was telling the truth about who his teacher was/is in South Korea. When they were at Cadena Air Base (most likely) before Nam they were maybe Karate trainers and maybe worked alongside Sato. What if Terry and Sato both founded Dynatox Industries? In part 2 Myagi does say that Sato’s family “was richest in village.” So maybe already having this wealth allowed him to go into this entrepreneurship with Terry. Remember the shirt Sato is wearing when he says “I come help rebuild?” Its like a recycling logo with fish. So is that an environmentalist shell company for Dynatox?

Sato taught Miyagi-Do karate, which was more of an offshoot of Goju Ryu, a traditional Okinawan art. He may have emphasised the more brutal aspects of the art, but it was still Miyagi-Do. Cobra Kai, was more of a taekwondo style, which is based off of Japanese Karate and is quite different. I doubt Silver was lying about it's origins. That said, didn't Miyagi fight in the Korean war? Perhaps, he actually met their teacher in Korea as an enemy and fought him, not knowing his name. Or their teacher was saved by Miyagi, watching him fight and this inspired him to learn karate. I think that would be a much more interesting reason for Cobra Kai's origins. That it's formation was inspired by Miyagi Do in a positive way, as a means of hope and it was John Kreese and Terry Silver, who perverted it's teachings. It would give Johnny and Daniel a stronger connection and perhaps inspire Johnny to want to search for a greater meaning to his art, while teaching Daniel that Miyagi's legacy has a far greater reach than the art he practises.

I do believe everything that Silver said about his master from Korea. For 5 years, I studied Sansei Isshinryu Karate, which is an offshoot from Okinawa Isshinryu Karate. My sensei learned Isshinryu while stationed in Okinawa, and while his other travels in the military, he studied judo, shotokan and other forms of martial arts, then combined what he learned into his own style. So it's possible Kreese and Silver learned karate from Korea, and in a layover in Okinawa, could've picked up karate from Sato.

@@merlin-ju6fu I'm sorry, but that would be an example of poor writing if that was the case. Having everybody linked in some way? Why? And why only indirectly for Daniel. Nobody else stateside has a connection to Okinawa. He is after all the lead character from the original films and one of the older leads from the new film, and the only connection to Mr Miyagi. There's plenty of people out there who could teach Silver and Kreese, and as Sato was a master (and an honourable one whose one weakness was his hatred for Miyagi), probably of similar standing in ability to Miyagi (a more experienced teacher also), they would have given Miyagi far more trouble if Sato had taught them.

@@merlin-ju6fu Julie an Mr Miyagi went on a road trip to a monastary. Thy never left the country. It may be the story of Cobra Kai, but it is clearly also the continuing story of Daniel. If Daniel was to drop out of the series, as great as Johnny is (best character imo btw), it would lose half of its appeal. The rivalry and the will they ever become friends is a big part of the appeal. For the record, I expect Daniel to travel to Okinawa to try and find some focus / balance. He will meet the lass and Chozen, and find Chozen to be a changed man (potentially Daniel may already be aware of this, potentially he may have been back already, cant remember if they have already mentioned if hes ever revisited the place). He will recieve a renewed focus from Chozen, and some additional training which Miyagi never gave him. I dont expect Johnny to accompany Daniel, but he may. Eventually, probably in S4 or 5 daniel and Johnny will team up and take on Kreese and Silver, possibly Barnes also. There prize student will beat Kreeses number 1 student at the all valley, then there will be a showdwn where kreese and silver are taught a very hard lesson in how to fight from Daniel and Johnny. Personally, I'd like this confrontation to be as 1 sided as when they took on Miyagi. I expect the series to end with Johnny and Daniel being very firm friends, Johnny to be reconciled with Miguels mother, and Miguel to be back to full fitness. I think it should end with a feel good ending. Of course, something else may happen completely.

FACTS: The writers of Cobra Kai would NEVER be desperate enough to make it so John Kreese and/or Terry Silver were trained by Sato. We live in a small world, but not that small. This video is so dumb that I literally thought you were going to say that Terry Silver inherited Dynatox from his father - a man who, according to the timeline, was old enough to know Sato so that both the Silver family and the Sato family became wealthy as a result of dumping radioactive waste in the area of Okinawa and Japan. Radioactive waste being dumped in the areas of Okinawa and Japan in that time period of 40 years prior to 1986 agrees with when a radioactive monster named Godzilla attacked Japan, so obviously Godzilla must be linked to Sato and Dynatox Corp. ... Sorry, this is just too far fetched. ... There would be far too many coincidences. If the writers were that desperate, it would be a BIG turn off! The way I interpreted the Karate Kid movies and Cobra Kai series, John Kreese and Terry Silver are associated with war in the geographic region of Vietnam, not Japan or Okinawa. The movies make it clear that John Kreese was definitely a karate master and repeated karate champion at the point he was in the Vietnam War. We also know Terry Silver was in the Vietnam War with John Kreese, and that John Kreese taught Terry Silver. Also, I got the impression that John Kreese was already a well-established karate master before he was even in the military. John Kreese simply displayed his skills as a champion of karate once he was in the military. If John Kreese was associated with Sato, wouldn't we have seen something associated with Sato being his teacher in the Cobra Kai dojo. Also, both John Kreeese and Terry Silver are very racist against people from the geographic region of Japan and Okinawa. Remember how Kreese called Mr. Myagi a "slope." If John Kreese had been trained by Sato, John Kreese would indisputably NOT be displaying such racist behavior against Myagi. There is no doubt Terry Silver was lying about his master being Kim Sung Yung of South Korea. Virtually everything Terry Silver said in that particular scene was a deliberate lie meant to deceive Mr. Myagi and Daniel. For example, Terry Silver also said John Kreese died in that scene, but that was a lie. Another example is Terry Silver saying all those lies about how "War does something to a man," and then saying "442nd" to Mr. Myagi. All of that was a setup so Terry Silver could once again "lie" to that guy at the dance club in order to hire him to start a fight with Daniel. Terry Silver "lies" more than any other character. There is NO DOUBT Terry Silver was LYING about "Kim Sung Yung of South Korea" being his teacher, because John Kreese and Terry Silver are HUGE racists and would NEVER allow themselves to be associated with "slopes" like that. There is no doubt Terry Silver was "taught" by John Kreese. Terry Silver was "taught" by John Kreese during Vietnam when Silver was young and Kreese was older and more experienced - a "champion." We were never told who the teacher of John Kreese was. But, there is no doubt John Kreese did not have a teacher who was a "slope" type of foreigner, because Kreese is far too racist. We were not even told if John Kreese had a "teacher" at all. We know for sure that John Kreese was the founder of the Cobra Kai concept and the "Way of the Fist" used by members of the Cobra Kai. We know this concept is based on the principles of: "Strike First; Strike Hard; No Mercy." We know John Kreese taught the concept of "When a man confronts you, he is the enemy; the enemy deserves no mercy." We also know Terry Silver purchased the Cobra Kai dojo for John Kreese. And we know Terry Silver planned on expanding this to an entire chain of dojos. We also know Terry Silver taught Daniel "The Quick Silver" concepts of "If a man can't stand; he can't fight. If a man can't see; he can't fight. And, if a man can't breath; he can't fight." Those may or may not have been actual lessons Terry Silver created on his own. Those three lessons also simply may have been another group of "lies" Terry Silver created simply for Daniel. This is a strong possibility simply because Daniel said, "You can't make me do something I don't want to do," and then Terry Silver responded by saying, "Ever since I met you I've been making you do things you don't want to do." This seems to imply Terry Silver may have created the "Quick Silver" concept simply as part of his plan to get revenge against Daniel. The bottom line is, we indisputably know for a fact that Terry Silver was taught by John Kreese. We know that John Kreese was the founder of Cobra Kai and The Way of the Fist. We do not know who the actual "teacher" of John Kreese was or "if" John Kreese had a teacher at all. We know for an indisputable fact that John Kreese and Terry Silver are very racist - they would never be associated with foreign people from Japan as part of their dojo or learning from them. If the writers were to say this is the case and claim we simply live in a world that small, the writers may as well just say Dynatox is a corporation owned by the wealthy Silver family and the wealthy Sato family, and then claim Dynatox and Sato are responsible for dumping radioactive material in Japan - which gave birth to Godzilla in the timeline of 1954 (which matches up with Sato being in the area at the time).

Terry Silver also told lies about how he respected the 442nd. And Terry Silver told lies about how he and his "Korean Master" were sorry for the "dishonorable actions of John Kreese." But in reality, ALL, I repeat, ALL, of that entire scene was a bunch of LIES from Terry Silver. John Kreese was NOT dead. Terry Silver did NOT believe the actions of John Kreese were "dishonorable." Terry Silver did NOT believe "the big war hero" Mr. Myagi and the 442nd were heroes at all. And the fact is, there IS NO "Korean master" named "Kim Sung Yung." This theory of Kreese and Silver being trained by Sato will ABSOLUTELY demolish the history of the Karate Kid Saga because right from Karate Kid I, we saw the mentality of both Kreese and Miyagi were completely different - Kreese, the type who goes round 'looking' for trouble by saying 'here - on the street - in competition, if a man faces you, he is the enemy.' This is an absolutely neurotic way of thinking. On the other hand, there is Miyagi - a very calm and placid person whose philosophy is 'let the fight come to you, if it is a matter of integrity'. So Sato could not have trained Kreese & Silver.

Back in the 1980s I'm sure reese just called it karate to get students in the door. I don't recall seeing cobra kai do katas. Seems like they only do exercise, sparring and drills. Definitely not like a traditional karate class. There are katas in tang soo do but it wouldn't surprise me if reese just skipped teaching those. The guy who created Kyokushin also spent years studying goju-ryu. Kyokushin was created in the 1950s-1960s.

After reading the comments, I personally know guys who trained one way (art) then went onto learn from others ie UFC. Sensi Kreese & Silver couldn’t train via Korean karate and still visited Sato at some point!

This one comes up now and then, and I doubt it will happen. Robby would first have to have a passport, which his negligent (now presumably in recovery) would not have been able to provide for him-nor would Johnny. Unless he could forge a passport with a different name (since he will likely be a fugitive after crippling Miguel), it isn't likely he will be there. But you never know. We can only wait to see what the writers came up with.

Makes a lot of sense. Two sides of the same coin, the yin and yang of Miyagi-do....Balance.

The hilarious thing is the actor that plays Terry Silver is actually 1 year younger than Ralph Macchio. Ralph was playing like an 18 year old in that movie while Silver was playing someone in his 30s. In reality Ralph was 27 and Silvers actor was 26.
