I have the trem mod on mine, and it works so well it covers the same territory as my '63 Brown face Princeton and '65 Deluxe reverb, trems which are totally different animals...Jesse is a genius :-) Needless to say I love my J20 !

Pete Townshend, always a proponent of Fender tweeds for recording, uses one of these in his studio. After watching this I can see why. Great tones.

I love Pete Townshend but his hearing is profoundly impaired from decades of high decibel concertizing. He suffers from both tinnitus and partial deafness, so I'd be hesitant to put him on a panel of judges as to what amps (or anything) sound best.

Thats the one I really wanted to see! Love tweed deluxe amps, but running one on 6L6 is just awesome! Didnt realize it had a VAC, Thats the way to go... no tone suck!

I have a Gallup made tweed deluxe clone amp and am looking for a decent priced marshall style combo to pair with it. I was thinking possibly a vht , ceriatone, or tube depot clone. Any advice?

I agree with the premise that the Tweed Deluxe + Celestion Blue is a match made in Heaven. You can spend literally hours going through the permutations of the two Volume controls - great fun on a rainy day. P.

Dan, I really loved your clean playing on your Telecaster in the beginning of the video. I love the sound of that Princeton-esque input compression - I have my "always-on" Ego set up to replicate that sound and that "sag" feeling (and to provide a nice buffer at the head of my signal chain). The Lazy J sounds really "Voxy" when you get it cooking. Do you think that's mainly due to the alnico blue?

Love that amp. Did some research and found one on Reverb.com, mint, manufactured 2015 for $3200. More clams than I've got at the moment for gear - but as they say you get what you pay for, eh? So where is the control for that attenuator circuit you mentioned? Did I miss it in the video?

Love tweeds, and I've been chasing down clips of these since first hearing Dan's on an earlier video. Every clip I've found sounds really good, which is unusual. There's definitely something a little different about them compared to the "standard" deluxe circuit amps you hear. Some elements similar to the fixed bias tweed (e.g. Harvard, Vibrolux) sound, maybe?

Are there any Lazy J Tweeds that come with Jensen speakers? I prefer to have a Tweed with Jensen speakers rather than Celestion speakers. Don't get me wrong, the Celestion speakers do create a lovely sound when they're installed in a Tweed, but I still prefer the classic Jensen/Tweed combo.

How loud were you playing to get that level of compression from the amp? Love that sound, like the speakers at the edge of what it can handle

+Krish Patel it was loud, gig volume. This amp has maximum headroom at 2 1/2, anything after that just compresses more

Hi, great little amp. I never heard it live (not via KZfaq). Is there a boxy sound in this amp? My Fender Blues Junior sounds a little boxy what I don't like...

Dan, how much headroom does the J20 have, when you really think about usable volume? If I wanted it for jazz to get the beautiful 'Tweed cleans' I love, would it suffice at listenable volumes, or should I go with the J40, which I also understand does not have an attenuator option. If you can help it would much appreciated. Thanks and cheers!!

+Dante André-Kahan J20 isn't about the crystal cleans. It's tweed cleans, which have a bit of break up. But it does get dirty very quickly. The J40 is beautiful

Lazy j 20 is a fantastic amp , Jesse makes two versions the J20h ( higher headroom) , Is yours the j20 or the j20h. Wonderful sound and fantastically built . Love them

Can you guys do a show that fieatures the Colorsound Overdriver/Power Boost or any clones of that circuit? Maybe along with other early overdrive pedals such as the Crowther Hotcake and the EHX Hot Tubes from before the dawn of the Boss od-1 and the tube screamer? And some version of an Electra distortion? Lately I've been into building clones of these cool primitive drives from before the dawn of the green pedals we know and love.

Awesome amp! I couldn't afford one so i built one, but i couldn't afford the 300£ blue speaker so i got a Weber clone of the original 5e3 style speaker. I tried it with a Greenback 25w as well, but that was too spikey for me :) I hope you're happy with yours, mine is certainly my favourite amp!

Weber makes a great version of the Jensen P12R (the 5E3 speaker) for sure. I have a lightly used 1960 original too, and the Weber hangs just fine with it. Weber also makes a nice version of the G12 blue speaker: the Blue Dog.

Dan could you just at least one time do a review on the Roland Blues Cube with tube logic ....I know there not tube amps and there probably your favorite kind of amp over solid state....but just once . I've seen plenty reviews on them, but would really like to hear you test drive one.....please?

It sounds good, but personally I couldn't justify buying one when a hot rod deluxe can come very close for a tiny fraction of the price. Still a very nice amp though. Tasty playing as always, Dan!

This amp got exposed by Brad's Garage, Psionic Audio, and others.....as CRAP. Maybe it sounds good when it's working, mostly the circuit and speaker responsible for that though.

aschneider70 I think part of the issue is he's playing filtertrons through it which sound fucking terrible when overdriven.
