Even Andrew Lloyd Webber said the only good thing about being involved in the movie was working with Taylor. The director wanted a new song and Taylor and Andrew did this.

The music was composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber, he asked Taylor to write the lyrics. that is a high honor. But for the movie, the lead actress sang it. Taylor also sings the song "Mcavity".

I think a lot of people hate on this song. It’s not supposed to be a BB Hot 100 song. It’s supposed to be a Broadway song, which is a different style. Andrew Lloyd Webber wrote the music and she wrote the lyrics and melodies. He praised her songwriting abilities on the song and said the only positive thing about the movie was getting to work with her. The reason it is in a British accent is because Cats takes place in Britain, it’s a British musical. She doesn’t sing the song in the movie, but does sing it in the ending credits. Which is one of the pre-requisites for Oscar nominations. It was nominated for a Golden Globe and a Grammy, both for music in a motion picture. “It’s just not Taylor Swift”, sure it is. You know Taylor switches genres and this is just her working with ALW on a song for the movie, that’s why it sounds different, it has to represent the movie, not Taylor. Writing for a movie is very different. Like Carolina, that doesn’t really sound like a Taylor Swift song either, but it fits in with the movie, the themes of the movie, the timeline of the movie, etc. I really like Beautiful Ghosts, I think it is exactly what it was supposed to be. Not supposed to be a top 100 pop hit. It fit into Cats. A horrible movie. but the song fit perfectly in the movie.

I don't wanna be that guy but its very American to not like this song and the play.....its a beautiful story. The movie isn't amazing but the songs and the vocal performances in the film were all top notch. This also came out in 2019 woth the Lover album when Taylor had full creative control of her work. She wrote most of the song herself haha. If you watch the movie and the play, this song perfectly fits....The belt comes in cause the last half of the song worms almost as a repirse......

You should react to this movie with your husband! It would be hilarious! It’s not a good movie but it’s worth seeing just once. She was good in her one big scene. The poor actors and dancers had no idea that their performances would be ruined by very bad CGI. It’s worth noting that Andrew Lloyd Webber loved this song and loved working with Taylor. He had nothing but stellar things to say about her. Taylor didn’t sing the song in the movie so her version is singing in the character’s accent and in her style.

I hated this film, but enjoyed her in it and this song is def the best part.

The brief was to write a new song for the movie version of a musical (and musical theatre folx have a LOT to say about ALW’s songs) So she wrote a version that could be pop or fully musical depending on who sings it. It’s not Taylor swift, it’s Cats.

I agree with you 100%, coming from a musical theatre background and being a Swiftie. I started following you a long time ago for these kind of analyses, so I'm elated and so thankful for this video! Reminds me of how much I used to love musical theatre. I think we've got a similar style when critiquing it.

I absolutely love this song. And it makes way more sense if you’ve seen the movie. I prefer hearing Taylor’s version versus the movie version, I feel like Taylor has more emotion in hers.

It’s a decent song. I didn’t like the decision for her to sing with the British pronunciation of some words. Most of the critics that saw the movie said Taylor’s 5 minutes and her singing the song of the final credits were the only redeeming qualities but still not worth the time. I mean it’s so bad that after she saw the premiere she didn’t even make a single comment about the movie or tell us to go see it. Meaning she didn’t like it and didn’t even want to subject ourselves to go see it.

I just listened to the version from the character in the film and it was vocally shaky from emotion. I wonder if that’s why some of the singing on Taylor’s version was a bit off as well? She was replicating the emotion?

I don't understand why people are getting so offended by honest opinions and critique. Not once did she say that Taylor couldn't sing or that the song as a whole was bad. It's not a bad song. I'm sure it was a huge moment for both Taylor and Andrew Lloyd Weber, to work together. All that's being said is that there are some stylistic elements of the song that either didn't make the most sense when she was listening or that didn't fit with Taylor's vocal talents. CATS takes place in London, so I'm sure it was a decision made between Taylor and Andrew Lloyd Weber to sing with a bit of that attempt of an accent to stylistically fit with the rest of the movie and the songs that were already existing. This was, after all, a song written new for the Movie Adaptation. It is a beautiful song and weaves a haunting and relatable story for some, I'm sure, but she's right, stylistically speaking it's not Taylor's best song out there. There's no harm in saying that.

This song was purely an attempt to have a shot at the Best Original Song Oscar, but it didn't work at all within the context of the film. The character (not played by Taylor) sings it at Grizabella, and it makes it feel like she's trying to outdo her for sympathy for no reason.
