John Ganz joins, diving right into his metaphor of the broken clock, inspired by the right-wing’s 1990s movement to “break the clock” of social democracy and Francis Fukuyama’s concept of the Neoliberal consensus as the “end of history,” and how it provides a lens into the evolution of the far-right GOP we see today. Ganz then walks through some of the major players in the end of conservatism as we knew it, including the GOP establishment’s rejection (and the voters’ embrace) of KKK Grand Wizard David Duke, the shortcomings of George H. W. Bush’s establishment centrism, and the fore-knowledge of libertarian Pat Buchanan, who would go on to serve as a central rhetorical influence for the presidential campaign of one Donald Trump.

I’ve never understood the war on single mothers. The Moms are the ones who stay and take care of the kids. Why not declare a “War” on Dads or partners who abandon their families? Answered my own question, patriarchy…

I was raised by a single mom because my father was killed in Vietnam. after Nixon and Kissinger sabotaged the peace talks. In '92 I voted against Bush specifically because I thought Quayle's vilification of single mothers was outrageous. The fact that he was able to avoid service in Vietnam just made it worse.

I lived in Louisiana when Duke ran for governor. The funny thing about that race was that, after Buddy Romer got eliminated, it came down to Duke and Edwin Edwards, who had gone through multiple corruption scandals already. Edwards, who ended up doing prison time for taking kickbacks during his term, was shockingly self-aware and printed bumper stickers that said "Vote for the crook. It's important." Just a reminder that, as bad as you think your state's politics are, you can always look at Louisiana to feel better.

The "broken clock" discussion is an opening for me to raise a quote that I want burned into the consciousness of every one of us: "'Back to 1900' is a serviceable summation of the conservatives' goal." - George Will, syndicated column, January 2, 1995. As Maya Angelou wisely said, "When someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time." The showed us, they told us in so many words, a long time ago. "The phrase “states’ rights” is no longer encoded racism, it is a reaffirmation of constitutional and philosophic principles older than and superior to the liberal project." @@arcadiaberger9204 I would not even say the "top tax bracket" because the ultra wealthy do not get taxed at the top bracket due to "capital gains" which is lower. The high tax bracket is for "earned income" not capital gain income such as stocks , bonds and sale of real estate.

Interest, ordinary dividends, royalties, rental, and other sources of ordinary income are still taxed at ordinary rates. They do get a lot of breaks average people don't have access to, but the rich are still in the top tax bracket.

wealth is the ultimate source of hate because hate grows from fear, and the wealthy live in a constant state of background fear that the wealth they've stolen will be taken back. bigotry is just a tool the wealthy use to keep the poor at each other's throats instead of getting their heads together and figuring out who the real enemy is, and how to deal with them.

They think that regulations stifle business and letting the wealthy keep their money will, eventually (any day now), trickle down to their workers and community around them. They don't believe that the Republican party wants to overturn Social Security. I think it's a combination of the right being good at lying and people wanting to believe they're honest, I think

I don’t know enough about tenacious millennial actresses to find a metaphor for Candace Bergen in the early 90’s. 🤣 Hathaways pops into my head first but she doesn’t have a TV show. Zooey Deshanel? Scarlet Johanson? Candace Bergen was a super-hot young Nepo babe in the 60’s and kind of never went away.
