BMW's first SUV has been a huge success for the company over the last 2 decades and the latest version of the #BMWX5 is one of the most well-rounded luxury SUV's on the market. With the industry heading toward electrification, the #X5xDrive45e is the latest #X5 with a plug. Compared to the previous version, the #xDrive45e trades the 4-cylinder for a silky smooth turbo I-6 cylinder engine and the larger battery pack allows for 31 miles of electric only range.

So I own an X5 45e and here’s a few things I’d add: 1. Electric Only mode is just fine for in city driving - it is enough to accelerate faster than most cars from a stop light up to city speeds - which is what it’s really for. In normal Hybrid mode, the gas engine will engage above 68mph and usually will kick in during merging while accelerating on the on ramp. 2. Over half of my 25k miles has been in EV mode - which means I’ve saved over $1k in fuel per year so far. My cost per mile on electric is .03c / mi, while my gas cost per mile is .16c / mi. A great city car that has an added bonus of being much cheaper to run. 3. 45e qualifies for $7500 tax credit making it cheaper than a comparable 40i model. Still good as of the 22MY. 4. The reason your range increased when driving is because in Sport mode the electric motor serves as a generator and adds about 3-4mi of range to the battery to support “Boost Mode” during hard acceleration to add performance. 5. The car averages 24mpg in highway driving - comparable to the 40i. But it blows it away when you factor in city driving. 6. The people who should buy this are folks who live in the city and commute to work. If you live in a rural area or are always on long trips, buy the 40i. But in the city, this is the smart buy if your electric rates are reasonable. It gives you EV range for the daily commute and gas convenience for the occasional long trip without the need to charge. 7. Towing Capacity is not 7k lbs - it is 5959lbs due to the added weight of the battery pack. I use mine to tow an E39 M5 and it is fantastic while towing.

Same here I agree with all the above. I am probably 75% on EV since I don’t commute in the car at all. Agree that the acceleration is fine. No one should expect Tesla level acceleration on a PHEV it’s meant to save gas and go around town, not for high performance

I took the X5 45e for a test drive at a BMW drive event. I loved everything about it it; including the air suspension. I thought it was even more fun than the X3 M. The instant torque in the X5 45e is awesome -- I even got it in a AWD drift while turning. Only thing I didn't like was the regen every time I let off the throttle. Is there a way to make it coast -- so I don't get the jerky feeling?

I am driving one myself. Very very happy. Since my travel are mostly local like taking my kid to school and back home, grocery shopping, etc. I barely need to fill in any gas in last 3 weeks. Honestly, my last 3 weeks gas cost is 11.56 at 4.86 per gallon. I calculated if I use gas, the cost per mile is around 36 cents mile, if I use the battery with my home charger, it cost around 11 cents per mile. Electric mileage is not as good as a tesla 3-4 cents per mile, but it gives me a peace of mind if I need to do long distance travel with no worries of inability to find a EV charge station nearby. The best news is, it (x5 45e without any options 63700 - 7500 Fed EV Credit in effect) just cost lower than a Tesla Model Y long range w/o FSB (Currently 62990), but of course BMW got way better build quality and much better interior. I ordered mine in Dec 2021, and got my X5 45e on Feb 21, 2022). Also, Tesla does not allow me to buy 4 yrs extended warranty on Model Y, but BMW allow me to extend my warranty to full 7 yrs for extra 7900, plus the 4 yrs extended maintenance for 5200. So I can foresee my 7 yrs TCO in advance without much worries since Roadside Assistance comes standard with my BMW 7 yrs extended warranty. This best purchase decision I have made so far. My last ride is MB GLK 350 4matic.

I love the style. In all fairness to your criticism regarding acceleration from 0 to 60 it’s important to remember it’s only an SUV. Im curious as I cant seem to find anywhere...I own a 2018 X5 40e and want to know if there is a way to determine how many miles have been driven in EV mode vs ICE mode as the odometer tracks all miles? In theory, for every mile driven in EV mode, should extend the life of the engine by that many more miles...so ex - if I can get 200,000 on a normal ICE BMW X5, and I utilize EV mode 50% of the time, then the engine should still have 100,000 miles of life once I reach 200,000 miles correct? Id like to see where I can differentiate between the miles on the odometer.

Sofyan, it is a PHEV NOT a dedicated BEV, so your comparison isn’t apples to apples. That electric motor is supposed to aid the ICE, not hustle the car at full speed and acceleration down the road… Who drives like that 100% of the time anyway. The most efficient way of driving the PHEV is leave them on automatic hybrid mode, so when you need power the gas engine will kick in (and that happens way sooner that pushing the gas pedal thru the kick down step), and will get you going or out of the way quickly, otherwise, the electric motor is plenty for most daily driving situations. That transition is seamless in my experience. The point of the PHEV is to gad better fuel economy and slightly better performance, but it isn’t to eliminate gas usage all together. If you want to have an electric car, then you should go for a dedicated BEV.

This is where all the kids need to pay attention. This is what real luxury looks like. It’s not just about a little stitching on the dashboard and stamped sheet metal to look like solid aluminum like all the Japanese cars that are trying to be “premium”. It’s all about the things you can’t see or don’t pay attention to. Things like how thick the metal bars are that are holding the headrests, or the fact that it’s got about 400 pounds of sound insulation so that it’s a smooth quiet ride (not just on the door so that it has a solid thunk to trick consumers). The sheet metal throughout the body is thicker, more solid safety beams, dashboard panels that don’t flex and give way, a console that doesn’t band when you rest on it And most surprising is almost everything on it will have a sensor that can report back to the main computer.. Sure, Kia can make a car appear like a BMW or an Audi but when you sit in it it’s a completely different feel and you know it. No amount of stitching or diamond patterns can emulate it

A plug in Hybrid is NOT an electric car and they are not comparable! It is also not about the looks as most electric cars look pretty much 'normal'. Plug-in hybrids are about flexibility allowing you to daily commute in electric-only, saving fuel, with the convenience of a combustion engine for the occasional long-distance trips without having to plan the charging stops. If you want an electric car, you buy an electric car, not a plug-in hybrid...

You have to understand that a 17 kilowatt motor compared to 82 kilowatts, plus the same heavy car, is simply not able to take off, as a car with 82 kilowatts does. It's not even discussed. The battery here is purely for that hybrid combination or driving in traffic. In general, if all the settings are correctly located, then this car has acceleration from 0-60 in 4.3 seconds. @tdraphael
@tdraphael Жыл бұрын
The author is incorrect. It is a 24kw battery in the US model (I own one), BUT only 17kw is available to reduce deep discharge and lengthen battery pack life. US warranty on battery pack is longer than European version, which reserves less stored energy, resulting in a deeper discharge per full cycle--and shorter battery pack life.

Great review. Biggest issue I have with this X5 is the second row seat. It is inexcusable how small the legroom is back there. It feels even smaller and more cramped than X3. Not going to drop 70k for a supposedly family SUV with no space. Also the charge rate is ridiculous. Only 17kwh battery but needs 4-5 hours to fully charge? Not sure what BME engineers were thinking. Basically needs to be plugged in every single night to get enough power for daily commute. Seems like this hybrid basically has the combination of the worst of both ICE and EV world. Very disappointing.
@mystic8260
@mystic8260 2 жыл бұрын
the point of a plug in hybrid is to plug it in every night to be ready for the daily commutes. It does not depend on electric driving so it does not need fast charging. PHEVs are meant for daily trips in electric mode and occasional long trips using the engine. If you want to drive on electric only and need fast charging as you want to do long trips in electric mode, then get an electric car.
