In this video, Dr. Grant Cooper from Princeton Spine & Joint Center is with Dr. Adrienne Jensen from Activcore and Dr. Zinovy Meyler from Princeton Spine & Joint Center discuss exercises you can do for hip pain. Dr. Jensen walks us through her favorite exercises for hip pain.
Whether you have a bursitis, hip flexor tightness, your psoas is overactive or whether you have some arthritis in your hip these exercises generally address hip strength which can really decompress the joint and relax your pain or decrease your pain.

I’ve tried glute bridges many times. Unfortunately I always feel it in my low back, and not in my glutes. My PT recently tried putting a band around my knees and still no success. Only thing I felt the next day was back pain. Any advice?

You shouldn’t feel back pain during or after glute bridges. Are you doing a pelvic tilt prior to the bridge? If not, try that. Flatten your back so that you tilt your pelvis so that the space between your lower back and the floor disappears. Then do the glute bridge while holding that pelvic tilt. Let us know how that goes.

One final thought, Mike, about glute bridges and other exercises. Glute bridges are a great exercise and, when done with the pelvic tilt, should be safe and effective. However, at the end of the day, bodies are funny things and sometimes someone's body just doesn't respond well to a particular exercise and you have to listen to that. If your back keeps hurting when you try a glute bridge, despite the pelvic tilt, then stop doing them for a while and work with your therapist on another way to strengthen the gluteus that doesn't bother your back. Sometimes, it seems like an exercise should be perfect for someone but if it bothers them instead, it's better to listen to your body than to force the issue. If an exercise is hurting during or after, then skip it and go on to another one. There are so many great ways to strengthen your muscles, don't get stuck on one that is bothering you.
