I had found a tutorial about 8 yrs ago on Bag O Day Crochet an Jayda in stitches , I learned to do a skein with my knees, from Bag O Day, but I just recently bought a swift. , But I have also did it by hand with jayda very carefully , with your fingers and similar winding as if you have a stick. BUT I love your tutorial as well. Thank you. So much.

In my country, yarn skeins are more common and cheaper than the balls. So i learned to make yarn balls when I was young. Now, after getting married I have trained my husband to do it. 😊

I wind skeins before I go to bed, looped over my knees and feet, lol and use a really big crochet hook (P, Q or S). It's rather exhausting, but i can start a project in the morning.

When you have no tools you can always use your thumb. I hold a short yarn tail in my palm, stick up my thumb, and carefully wrap my yarn above my knuckle/below my nail, angling the yarn as I go to make an even ball. When the tip of my thumb is covered I pop the small ball off my thumb and just hold it in my hand as I wind the yarn, making sure not to cover the yarn tail or the original thumb hole.

I use my closed fingers as the spoon...been doing this for years. Just make sure you don’t wind it too tight especially if you are using a cotton. It will kind of fuse together😅

That would work - although I wonder how big a ball you can make using fingers.

@@TuulaMaaria OH, I forgot to say you take it off your fingers after it gets too big then just wind it around as big as you want.

As a beginner, I really wish people didn’t recommend acrylic yarn. I understand it’s because it’s cheap and you don’t want to spend a lot of money on a new hobby that you may not pursue long term. But it was really difficult to see my stitches and the yarn kept splitting because of frogging, and it was very discouraging. I saw someone on TikTok recommend the Lion Brand Lazy Days yarn and it’s been so much easier to deal with, plus it’s affordable.

As usual, you offer common sense advice that blows me away. I had been advised to wind on my fingers. That gets uncomfortable FAST, and I kept having to put the yarn down to untangle the skein... use a stick! Duh! :D

Occasionally a yarn doesn't come out well so you need to untangle at first but you learn how to mostly get it out easily. I have used the centre pull since the 70s! 😊

I hate the center pull, it makes it messier in the long run, which makes my yarn tangle, which is not good for me bc my parents get mad at me for it 😭 I really really want to try this out someday

Why is it necessary to wind yarn... why not just knit or crochet straight from the ball as it's bought?

From a ball, yes, but if the yarn comes in a hank, you have to wind it one way or another.
