PLOT: Ed Harris and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio are formerly married petroleum engineers who still have some issues to work out. They are drafted to assist a gung-ho Navy SEAL (Michael Biehn) with a top-secret recovery operation: a nuclear sub has been ambushed and sunk, under mysterious circumstances, in some of the deepest waters on Earth.

I remember when this first came out in 1989, this was a groundbreaking effect. I had never seen anything like it, this effect is one that cannot be done practically. It was a first glimpse into the world of CGI.

It took 6 months to make this effect. This was the first really amazing cgi in a film, before T2 and Jurassic Park.

I always remembered this scene for how it contrasted the difference in responses between scientists and the military. Scientists were fascinated, curious, and approached with friendliness while the military was fearful, defensive and hostile.

James Cameron never really settles for less!!! Keeps breaking his own records!!!! I bet the viewers of 1989 were never ready to see this type of special effects.... the same feel we have when we saw Titanic, then the Avatar that really wowed everyone!!!! What a genius!!!!

If only you have seen the 1966 Columbia remake of the 1956 Paramount Ten Commandments you would be thousand times amazed ! I saw the 1966 Ten Commandments. It was a faithful remake of the 1956 original but the 1966 remake was and is much better.

Watched this movie for the first time yesterday. I absolutely loved it, it's full of awesome moments, action, breathtaking effects (this scene here was one of my favs). Bud & Lindsey are a great and strong couple. Dude with the rat was cool, just like Cat 😂. Lt. Coffey was a memorable bad guy. Abyss is dev in my top 10 now. I'm only 17 but I try to find and watch as many gems from the 80's, and 90's as possible. The Abyss was great.

That scene is just a pure Spielberg moment! It doesn't serve any significant purpose in the story, but it's a moment where characters are just being themselves and looking at something amazing in childlike wonder. When the NTI's imitate their faces it's like in ET and Jaws when two characters are copying each others movements.

I can see Cameron refining the special effects used for this scene when he would make Terminator 2. The T-1000 definitely borrows inspiration from this special effect.

Man, Michael Biehn was phenomenal in this role. The range of affect he was able to show (not to mention the tension it helped create) was just a pleasure to watch. Great scene.

I understand that the actors and crew had a nightmarish experience working on this film but, honestly, I think it’s Cameron’s best work and a cinematic thrill ride that never lets the audience up for a breath of air until the end.

James cameron is a genius,,, you have to remember CGI or SGI Silicon Graphics Machines like the onyx and things like that were really quite new to market and "Alias Wavefront" was really revolutionary... Alias Wave front became Maya ... but James Cameron and his crew had to learn it and use it at the same time... and if anyone is used to Alias wavefront youll remember the giant folded instruction both sides,, of the incredible amount of things you could do with it...... it was crazy!!

The boss of this game was actualy influence by this sequence, like many other trying to replicate that shiny chrome reflection of the T2, without Abyss we never get the chance to see photoreal CGI effect in movies.
