Season 17 : BREAKING NEWS!
Episode 12 : Lucy Letby
When the mortality rate in the Neonatal Unit of the Countess of Chester Hospital increased, doctors pointed out that Lucy Letby had been the only one on shift during all the deaths. Management tried to brush it off as coincidence, but it wasn't long before they learned that the infants were intentionally being killed.

Unfortunately, many hospitals in the UK are understaffed and at a critical rate of decline due to our government slowly ruining the NHS. @@ellenw1952Except the staff noticed what Lucy was doing and that still wasn't enough. It was repeatedly mentioned that she was witnessed harming a child by a staff member but they didn't know to suspect her because of how out of the ordinary that would be. Some of the staff DID have suspicion towards her, but even those staff members were silenced and forced to apologize. Adding more staff wouldn't have fixed this problem, "inadequate staffing" was just an excuse used to explain away the deaths while completely ignoring Lucy's potential (and frankly, obvious) culpability.

Sadly, that a nurse committed these crimes doesn’t surprise me at all. There was a time in the UK where NHS nurses were considered to be selfless, altruistic angels. I’m afraid those days are long gone. Unfortunately, nursing seems to attract an increasing proportion of people who were high school bullies, seeking an opportunity to further target a captive pool of infirm, bedridden patients to victimise; although Letby’s motives appear to have been a lot more complicated. I spent 4 months as a patient on a burn ward 3 years ago at the height of the pandemic lockdown (so I wasn’t allowed any visitors to whom I could seek help), and my experience of the evil nurses making fun of my scars every single day was honestly worse than being trapped in the fire and receiving third degree burns to 25% of my body. I have PTSD flashbacks to my time being bullied in hospital; the fire, not so much. I honestly wish I’d died in the fire rather than go through those 16 weeks of hell being ridiculed. All of this to say, I am certain that there are far more Lucy Letby’s out there, quietly harming patients, who remain undiscovered, mostly because they are careful to limit the amount of people they injure or kill. Maybe it’s just denying them pain relief to "teach the patient a lesson" for annoying them earlier in their shift; maybe they do something a lot more serious. Perhaps they target geriatric patients instead, who the public care about comparatively less than neonatal infants. The fact that hospital administrators are actively reluctant to investigate patient deaths makes it so much easier, as does the culture of medical professionals covering up malpractice. It’s automatic to attribute unexpected deaths to nebulous "complications"; nobody wants to believe the reason could be a lot more sinister. However I fundamentally don’t understand why the hospital staff who actually _DID_ suspect Letby of killing babies didn’t just phone the police. They could’ve even done so anonymously if they were more worried about retribution than the multiple dead babies. They knew their reports to senior hospital personnel weren’t being acted upon as an immediate threat to life. In any other setting, you’d contact the police the moment you suspect a murder has been committed; but just because the death happened in a hospital, medical staff only belatedly reported it up the chain. Madness. When babies are dying, in the full knowledge that hospitals will do nothing, *_PHONE THE EFFING POLICE ASAP!!!_* The hospital where I was a patient (the Queen Elizabeth hospital in Birmingham, West Midlands) and the wider University Hospitals Birmingham Healthcare Trust, is currently being investigated by the CQC (Care Quality Commission) for institutionalised bullying, racism and misogyny amongst the doctors and nurses (no word yet if they’re going to investigate how badly they treat patients), especially after a junior doctor, Dr Vaish Kumar, committed suicide as a direct result of being bullied by other doctors there. Her contract was at an end, and she was happy she could at last escape the toxic culture; but then she was suddenly told her contract had been extended by 6 months…that was the last straw for her. Her suicide note said the working environment "just broke me". Even now, 50% of the staff report being the victim of bullying at the QE hospital. Apologies for rambling. I’m especially sorry if you’re about to go into hospital for any treatment! It’s obvious I’ve got a very low opinion of the state of NHS nursing care here in the UK. I’m sure there _must_ be some good nurses out there, somewhere…hopefully, maybe? The chronic underfunding and privatisation of the NHS by the Conservative government has definitely had a deleterious impact on standards. Even in America, it’s estimated that a third of hospital deaths are the result of misdiagnosis or malpractice. (It’s hard to put an exact figure on it as death certificates don’t record misdiagnosis/malpractice as the cause of death.) Nobody knows the number of patients who have been deliberately killed by doctors or nursing staff, because unless they are discovered, they get away with it. Thanks for coming to my depressing TED Talk!

They did, eventually. I think you need to look more into the dynamics that existed between the nurse and the doctors she was in conflict with. You put your finger on one of the main motivations for finding her guilty. How humiliated would you feel if you were forced to write an apology letter to this upstart nurse? Wouldn't you want to take revenge against her? Maybe go above your administrators' heads and punish them for making you do such a humiliating thing as well? Of course you would. You'd go to the police with your evidence and use them to trump NHS admin and get the nurse in trouble. Taken objectively, that motivation is far stronger than Letby's motivation, which seems to rely on her being the spawn of the devil.

Then the cops talk to hospital admin, who blows it all off and you not only get fired but you now have a reputation for going outside chain of command and accusing coworkers of horrific crimes. Even if you're proven right somewhere down the line, good luck getting a job ever again at any hospital. So many people believe that ONLY abuse creates monsters...but no, some children are born monsters and only strong discipline can stop them from continuing down that path. In fact I'd argue that MORE monsters come out of spoiled upbringings than abusive ones...not advocating abuse here (has to be said for all the black-and-white thinkers), just that people should be JUST as wary of spoiling their children.

I live in Hereford, and it's surprising that out of the 4 women in Britain to be given a whole life order 3 of them in one way or another had connections to Hereford. Rose West as her husband Fred was from Hereford. Joanna Dennehy attacked 2 men in Hereford. And Lucy Letby being from Hereford. Hereford is a small town but sadly there are some bad histories from here.

So many staff members were in tears, nurses came from other wards to give condolences, I still remember the mummy crying and holding me whilst they tried to resuscitate. Thinking of it happening again makes me panic.. i can't imagine someone willing causing it over and over again, putting your colleagues through that trauma and then texting them like you're friends. "Consistency is the death of coincidence." Is what my friend sent in an email to the agency that employed his state appointed nurse who cared for his special needs daughter. Every Friday during this nurse's shift, my friend's daughter would get extremely ill and require emergency hospital care. I saw the photos on Facebook of her hooked up to a bunch of machines, fighting for her life. The nurse was removed from his home but we don't know what happened afterwards. It's a terrifying thought and maaaybe a coincidence but his daughter was never deathly ill like that again after the nurse was no longer in their home. Not sure why she did it (whatever she did) the theory is she just wanted the day off/a long weekend. It happened every Friday and sometimes within the first hour of her shift "she's really sick, you need to call an ambulance, I'm going home" kind of situation. People can be, well Monsters.

This is such an important topic. My Baby son, Phillip was born 5 weeks premature, 5lbs. 11 oz. He had a head full head of hair and looked full term. Before he was born, I was told he was fine. After I woke up, hours after his birth , I was told that they were having a hard time getting him to breathe. I had gone to every appointment, I had taken very good care of myself during my pregnancy. My landlord was pregnant at the same time. We both ended up delivering at the same hospital within the same 24hr.period. Her son was air lifted to a major hospital that has an amazing neonatal unit. He survived. I am so glad about that. At the same time , I was told there wasn’t an airlift available. That was just before her son was taken to a different hospital. But I’m not stupid. She had health insurance and money. I have never had an explanation as to time I tried to wake up to hold him. I was totally knocked out . I know that I was hysterical . I also know that I sound crazy now. But the nurse told me that the refrigeration unit wasn’t working and I had to hold him at that very moment or never. I have heard stories like this one that you just presented. I think it goes much deeper. There are 4 medical professionals in my family. They also chose to close their eyes. 👍Great job.

If I’m not mistaken word got around about the high death rate in the NICI and a woman begged for her infant to be removed from the clinic and admitted to another. When patients fear for their lives and the hospital administrators don’t investigate, it’s gross negligence and makes them complicit in the deaths.
