Back in the later stages of WWII there have always been rumors in regard to what happened to the Japanese soldiers when they retreated from the British on the swamps of Ramree Island. In this episode I examine the claim around the evidence and try to determine what actually happened. Were 1,000 Japanese soldiers killed by saltwater crocodiles during World War II?

And don't forget, the Royal Navy was probably raining at minimum destroyer calibre shells into the mangrove targeting the Japanese troops during that time. Disease, starvation, thirst, battle wounds. They'd retreated into the swamp to escape the attacking British landing force- so it's the survivors of the garrison trying to make it off the island back to the mainland, and because medical care isn't a high priority in the IJA, most of those who make it are probably wounded as well, with the Royal Navy lobbing shells in after them. Then, only then add in the local wildlife, the few large salties that were in the area, and venomous snakes. But it definitely makes for a good story, the massacre of a Japanese regiment at the (jaws) of giant salties!

I live in Australia… yep we have some deadly creatures here. 1 you don’t run through thick scrub or lift up logs and rocks during spring to summer. Snakes 2 if you go swimming up north anywhere above the 24 parallel then be careful if not swim there at all… especially inland rivers 3 yes kangaroos can attack you and cut you open 4 the eagles here are big enough to pick up your toddler and fly away 5 the spiders here can chase you and some even jump “Welcome to Australia “ 😊

@@AndrewGrey22 Male Sydney funnel webs there are in the Sydney area Andrew. They are highly toxic. In summer, they go wandering about looking for a mate and can end up in your slipper while you are asleep at night. I live in Melbourne (about 400 to 500 miles away) and, although funnel webs do exist in Melbourne, they are not nearly as toxic as the Sydney ones (which can kill adults). Fortunately there is antivenom available.

What pisses me off with you people is that you treat the Japanese Military in WW2 as stupid and outdated. All through the war the Japanese were the MOST experienced jungle warfare specialists of any major military.Typical western biased comment from someone who has no idea what they are talking about.

Two other possible causes you don't touch on are seppuku and hypothermia induced drowning. Staying in 70-80° water for a full night you freeze or pass out which isn't a good thing when in water. I'd guess it's a little bit of everything.

Anyone who knows anything about biology knows this story is an exaggeration. Firstly there can only be so many saltwater crocodiles on one island. They are huge natural predators and require habitats with high carrying capacity. Based on the size of the island, I’d estimate maybe 40-50 adult crocs. There were few Japanese soldiers left because they were already sick, wounded, or dying of disease, with many probably drowning in the mangroves as the tide rose, being shelled by artillery, or suicide. I don’t doubt some got killed by crocodiles but not a number like 1,000 that’s just ridiculous and goes against any laws of nature.

I suspect the majority either escaped or died to disease. The Japanese in the latter stages of the war had horrific supply shortages and an absurd amount of troops died that way. It literally could have been half. Fresh water is an issue in the mangroves too. The Japanese had a very intense culture and I think the lack of surrender that took place here is a pretty good example of what the people were willing to go through… and of course some were eaten by crocodiles.

You do a lot of half-ass researching. For starters, 500 of the 1,000 did make it to the other side of the island. The Japanese has a full record of each soldier that made it to the other end of the island. There are swarms of 300 to 500 crocodiles during mating season. And that island sounds perfect for females laying their eggs. The whole ordeal happened within a month. You didn't even tell the best part. Where the crocodiles started hammering the trees night and day. While every now and then shaking a soldier into the water. Or how the 500 that got left behind. How the ones not hirer then 15 feet in the tree. Where getting snatched by the crocodiles. You did not come across one letter about the constant pounding day and night by other soldiers? One more question: Why didn't you take any of the 20 men that were save accounts of what happened?

I don't know about the crocs killing 1,000 soldiers, seems unlikely. Crocs will take you, kill you and stuff you under a submerged stump to marinate. I don't think they hoard food though but they are opportunistic hunters. When the USS Indianapolis sunk in WWII 150 of the survivors waiting for rescue were eaten by sharks. They were out there floating for days. Can you imagine floating in the ocean for days not knowing when a shark would attack you. Or you are floating beside someone and they suddenly disappear.

there is croc's in the Americas too. In florida. So just as dangerous as australia. as well as the most shark attacks. No bears in australia, wolves, cougars, jaguars, lynx, bobcat, alligators too. Also some of the most poisonous snakes (rattler, viper, anacondas, traveling pythons from all over the world, spiders (eg. black widow, tarantula) Iv seen 3 wild tarantulas in ottawa ontario, they travel lol. My step dad worked at a fruit and veg warehouse. Dont get me started with the high north - polar bears, walrus, more arctic wolves, wolverines. Moose are very dangerous. Caribou herds are dangerous. Goats and rams are very dangerous in the west. Why is australia so dangerous ??? Oh liberal Media said so. lol there is nowhere more dangerous than the americas. Canada is more dangerous. How many types of bears do we have lol. Pretty much all of them. oh and killer bees. All kinds of bugs - hoards of bugs. Iv seen mosquito balls the size of houses and that was just the ones that were flying together. They were everywhere. Then flies, then lady bugs, then , then then. Every 7 years leaf hoppers, then they die off for the next 7 years and poof back again. Locust the size of mantises all over your windows doors etc. Just try to go outside to catch the school bus, lol. That was country living - well country swamp living. I can go on but i think you get the point. Oh and now we have hippos in the americas lmgdao. Why Australia, it doesn't even register.
