In late 2000 years i was moving between europe and asia a lot staying 6 month each. Notebooks were not powerful enough, so i moved mainboard/mem/cpu and hd with me. Noctua was the only cooler at that time who was easy to install and remove on systems. That made my way to Noctua, not the colling quality, and i never left this company in the last 15 years.

I used a slimmed-down Noctua cooler for a Ryzen system I built last year and was incredibly impressed by how well it cooled. At that point, I had only worked with AIO's and was surprised how well the Noctua cooler performed and the fact that it wasn't terribly loud even at full load. I can go either way with the color scheme, but for pure performance they are right up there with anything you can put in a system. Nice job with this video.

The strength of the NH-U12A is its smaller foot print, the biggest weakness is its price, any of the following coolers are better and cheaper Nocuta NH-D15S: With 2 NF-A15 it will outpeform it, both at high and low rpms. Thermalright LeGrandMacho: it will significanltly outperform it at the same noise levels. Thermalright SilverArrow T8: 8 pipes, with two fans it will also win over it in noise and temperature. Scythe Mugen5: on even fans (NF-A12x25) the mugen is better with a single a dual fans. Scythe Ninja5: It will also perform better and lower noise, specially if you keep the rpms even with the NH-U12A, the nocua needs the rpms to perform, while the ninja dont.

First of all i thank you for the excellent reviews. well i noticed you usually using AMD 1200 and though you are overclocking it to 4.1 GHz, it does't produce lage amount of heat as the 3700x or even the 3900x, also with overclocking as wel, witch will be a better way to compare coolers. So please try to use a little bit high end processors in the coming reviews. thanks again.

I wished they would have changed the wire colors to a braided black set up. I'd say it's an investment as well, it's an asset. And we invest in assets. I considered the dark rock pro4 , but ultimately decided on this nh-u12a, as it was a bit slimmer, and I liked that it sets up a bit for RAM clearance. The 6year warranty doesn't hurt.

Hey I was wondering if you could try a retest of sorts, between 1 vs 2 fans on the U12A? Seeing as this particular heatsink is almost sealed off, it would be like the diminishing results of a push+pull setup on a rad.. no? How much performance do you gain running two fans, and how much quieter is it only running one.. for example.

Noctua are clear leaders in cooling, fan technology and do a pretty comprehensive package of accessories with evey product. Not to mention excellent packaging and clear instructions. What's not to like? Well the colour, listening to many folk. I totally get that. However I can also totally see why they perservere with their 'beige and brown' (B&B) colour scheme. Were they to go all basic black then a lot of the visual differentiation vs. most other fans will be lost. If one understands anything about marketing and branding then one realises that having a clear USP and point of distinction is pretty important. Noctua performance is second to none. There products aren't particularly cheap but IMO offer excellent value vs. most alternatives. B&B is here to stay and I would venture to suggest without that kind of visual distinction that Noctua might well not have been quite as commercially successful as they have been. As the brand matures they rightly recognise the additional opportunity to cater to those who really hate B&B with their Cromax line. I don't much care for B&B but see it as a quasi 'badge of honour'. It's like ordering your Ferrari in red (or maybe yellow if you really understand that brand's history). Ditto a Lambourgini in eye catching green. Not that I can run to either brand but I do know that my next build will almost certainly include a NH-U12A for cooling the excellent i9900k. I will stay with B&B rather than shell out for Cromax - but each to their own. In short "it's hard to wrong with Noctua" - I must be a fan boy, by any normal definition, but receive no payment or any other benefit from choosing Noctua apart from satisfaction of picking one of the best cooling options available.

@@rickymcc9072 I agree. Noctua just do it right. I just bought my first noctua - NH-u12a, but it's probably not my last. I looked at the top players before buying this one. I settle in on performance and quality. I was going to get the 15d. But decided against it as its size it a tad more and I like this offset design to allow for various RAM options. The 15d was about $30 cheaper when i bought this. I want to install it and forget about it. I don't want to worry about it breaking down, or leaking fluid or pump failure(I also have a fractal 240 in another build - it was such a deal I had to buy it) the 240 is a fairly quiet and cool my 8700k fairly well. Looks like a more expensive version of the one I had with my 1156, but two fans and much better quality. Just to mention, Noctua are working on black fans for this cooler as part of the Chromax range. Taken a while though due to the polymer used for the blades. The fan blades are almost touching the shroud for better performance. You cant do that with conventional plastics because the blades lengthen over time due to centrifugal force. The real king of the Noctua range is the NH-D15S... The high compatability version.

What do you think about the other Noctua coolers? Is this the best of them all? I am currently trying to decide whether I should go for this one or the NH-U14S. I have a Ryzen 5 2600X processor, I live in southern Italy and my indoor temperatures are somewhere around 31-33°C; with the Wraith Spire cooler in a game like Medal of Honor: Airborne (2007!) I've had peaks of 76°C, so I need something a lot better than stock. I'm not considering their flagship model, the NH-D15, since it's too big and expensive for me.

Honestly im super satisfied with my mugen rev b +1 fan. Although it doesn't cool as good as a noctua , its silent operation and price is still A+. If their new cooler is as good as it claims to be then there would be no reason to pick a noctua over it unless someone likes that unique noctua cooler scheme.

I got this because a D15 would not fit in my case. I figure the 5950X would be a little tough to cool since AMD recommends water cooling. I use BOINC while I use my PC, I have been getting package temperatures in the 80s degC with PBO on. Disabling both PBO and CBO, the temperature is around 69 degC for my typical use. I feel am not getting the best airflow in the case and I could probably see if I can get lucky reapplying thermal paste. I usually to a pea-size dot in the center and it has served me well, but might try spreading the paste due to the large IHS and how the CCDX and IO dies are laid out. But the thermal throttle temperature is 95 degC if I remember correctly. I never had a CPU this high-end, so I might be overthinking this.

How heavy is that thing? My only concern with these big tower coolers is the amount of stress they put on the socket and the backplate. If you drag your machine around to lan parties and such I'm always worried if I hit a bump in the road the entire weight of the cooler will start stress cracking the motherboard. Honestly, I love the colors of the Noctuas. They remind me of Bentley styling.
@ponchato
@ponchato 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah it is quite heavy, 1220g with both fans. As long as you have the computer on its side (oriented with the cooler upright) I wouldn't be worried about just driving around. Defo wouldn't ship a PC with this thing installed though

Perhaps you've discussed this on other videos, or maybe I even missed it in this one, but why do you test these large coolers on such a low-power CPU? Why an R3 1200? Considering your test results at full load have almost every cooler you tested within 3 to 5 degrees of each other, I would argue that you aren't putting enough heat into them to really be able to tell which ones stand out. In fact, most reviewers would consider 3 to 5 degrees within a reasonable margin of error. Also, the low heat doesn't allow full testing of BIOS fan profiles. If you were testing low profile or other low-power coolers, that choice of processor might make sense. To me, it's like testing racing tire performance on a Yugo...
@TheDoomerBlox
@TheDoomerBlox 5 жыл бұрын
Indeed, total heat load is quite important when comparing coolers for different scenarios. Lesser coolers can look brilliant when dealing with quad-cores, yet croak under the pressure when asked to cool a clocked to hell eight-core. Another sneaky thing is that the greater the heat density is, the more important the thermal interfaces between silicon to IHS, and the IHS to heatsink start to become - and bottlenecks in any of them can also severely limit how much a cooler can do. Seemingly nobody has really bothered to be concerned about hardcore air cooling, though. :- )

+1 First thing I noticed when viewing the benchmarks. People building budget machines buying THIS for them? WHY??? 2700X, 8700K, 9900K... now these would've made sense at the time of the review, but not a 1st gen Ryzen that most DIY builders avoided 2 years ago. I doubt I'll even come off the $100 even for my upcoming 3900X build considering the price tag, but I'll seek out specific reviews on that CPU with these high-end coolers to make a final decision.

Me look at that slow-mo where the fans spinning clock wise, "Hah? Isn't clock wise spin with blade like that should be push the air to the front not the back?" I thought case fans and cpu fand always spinning counter clock wise, since if I looking at my wall mounted fans, it always spin clock wise that made it push air to me, not pulling the air. How is this possible with noctua fans? Or there's something that I don't knoe?
