I keep saying this to my friends! This is basically how I brute forced a higher level of listening comprehension. I love listening to stuff, both new and old while walking and driving, especially listening to stuff I've read before! It's also massively helped both my comfort and reading ability with Japanese. Highly recommend to anyone with over a few thousand Japanese words in their lexicon.

The KZfaq Gods have blessed me again. I'm strongest at reading in Japanese, weakest in speaking, and in the middle is audio. I sometimes can understand the bulk of what is said but always felt I needed to hone in on my hearing comprehension. Not once did I consider a Japanese audio book! I'd always try to find podcasts or listen to video games in Japanese. But, this video convinced me: GET INTO AUDIOBOOK YESTERDAY Thank you. I feel like with this knowledge who knows what doors it will open. Will I find audiobooks of one of my favorite series or even a new series that will become my favorite?!? Great video. Awesome vid! How are not cold wearing shorts in February? I'm getting cold just looking at it! I also do intense listening! Well, cuz really, at my level i don't have much choice, haha. But i like it, because often at the second or third rewind i pick up stuff i didn't before and then i feel really proud of myself. I worked on project that was like Audible but for Israel, so found out that this sort of narration is called "dramatic narration" and it requires separate rights and they're shit loads more expensive than just regular audio rights. Probably why its less done in the west. My favorite audiobook (well, its not really an audiobook) is "Good Omens". I think the radio skit is better than the book. Are all audiobooks in Japan done this way?
@lazyfluency
@lazyfluency Жыл бұрын
Video was shot in January... I think, lol. Just finally got around to editing it. With that said, my legs are always very warm. I grew up sledding in shorts. Which is to say Japan's winter is not too cold to me, haha. My upper body does get pretty cold, hence I'm wearing a jacket. Oh, that's interesting, "dramatic narration." I can see how projects like this would be very expensive. comissioned music, sfx, 18 actors, editors, I assume a director of some kind, as well as many other costs. Not all audiobooks are done this way/well, but quite a lot are. Multiple narrators (frequently professional voice actors) who perform more so than read is common. 18 is probably unusually high though. As I said though, 1 narrator straight forward narrations are also available. Fiction leans towards heavy production, non fiction, less.
@OddityLemmur
@OddityLemmur Жыл бұрын
@@lazyfluency I meant like, just to legally do a bombastic production like that, you have to buy "dramatic narration" rights from the book agency or whomever owns them. And just that in itself is about 5-10 times more expensive than just regular rights to record an audio version.
@lazyfluency
@lazyfluency Жыл бұрын
@@OddityLemmur Oh I see. That makes sense. Japan's copy right laws are a whole beast unto themselves, so I wouldn't be surprised if that affects things (not sure if that would make things more or less expensive though, haha).

Are there any sources of free or public-domain audiobook content out there, and would you recommend we consume those for learning? I wouldn't mind getting some kind of audiobook subscription, but to start with I don't know whether it's worth it and since I don't have my own income it would be nice to see if the experience itself is a good fit. I would love something like Project Gutenberg in audiobook form, but I also don't know whether that kind of content would be digestible for non-advanced learners, as anything so old might be too dated to easily understand...

Ideally you want something that you find engaging and that you can understand a decent amount of (i.e. enough to enjoy). As for free content, aside from the youtube recommendations I make, I know audiobook.jp has free content you can try out. With that said, just because it is free doesn't mean you will enjoy it. If you just wanna have a taste of listening to Japanese, there are plenty of free ones you can check out!

Are there any super fast ways of making Anki cards out of sentences from an audiobook? I don't mind doing it all manually but if a better way exists id rather do that.
@lazyfluency
@lazyfluency 7 ай бұрын
If you just mean sentences (not the audio itself), then yes there are. As audiobooks come from books, and many books have ebooks (i.e. mineable text). I recommend checking out the website jpdb.io. In terms of making cards out of audio, there are many theoritical ways you could do it, but I'm not sure of any established way to do so. Generally speaking, as long as you have a reasonally effortless approach to manually mining I wouldn't worry about efficiency. The act of encountering an unknown word or phrase in a natural context that you are engaging with has been shown to help you acquire vocab. This is to say, that there are benefits from mining manually, that you don't get from let's say just downloading an anki deck.

@Lazy Fluency Basically in the sense it has a full cast of characters, sound, and is of a fantasy bent with language that from what i heard wasnt too advanced. @lazyfluency I'm sure it is ,but I'm not comparing audio books to anime. I'm more comparing something you've already seen and watched before so u already know the plot so when u listen ur not zoning out from not understanding anything. I would assume more ppl watch anime than read Japanese books hence why I used anime. But if you've read a book or audio book then u can relisten easier. I have massive trouble concentrating if I don't already know the plot
@lazyfluency

Oh, yeah I totally agree with you on that! It also depends on what level of Japanese you are at and what kind of content interests you. I am not much of a rewatcher, haha. Is listening to japanese audio books without having good enough japanese to understand most of it will eventually make my understanding better?
@lazyfluency
@lazyfluency Жыл бұрын
Depends on your approach. It is thought that when learning languages you want to engage with content where you understand 70-90 percent of it. The idea is that you can use your knowledge of what you know to infer what you don't know. It also increases the amount of content you can consume and makes the experience less frustrating. This is all to say, that I wouldn't recommend listening to content at a level where you can't understand most of anything. Instead I would recommend listening to easier content and or listening while looking at a transcription. Our podcast's most recent episode has a transcript attached, so I would recommend giving that a listen to get an idea for what that experience is like, haha. As I mentioned in the video audiobooks come from books, so most of the time a book and or trancript are available if you look for it. Joey

@@Waifuneeded If you are a beginner, I would recommend looking up 「子供向け 朗読」on youtube. You should be able to find some short stories to try out. If that is too easy and you feel like you want to try something a level up from that, I would actually recommend listening to some Japanese only podcasts to see if that is something you feel comfortable with. If so, then I would recommend looking at some of the self help /opinion piece audiobooks on audiobook.jp as they tend to use more common and conversational language. If you find out which of the above feels comfortable I wouldn't mind giving you a specific recommendation!

"multi-talented" Hmmm...
@lazyfluency
@lazyfluency Жыл бұрын
The more accurate statement I intended to make was something like "Given that there isn't as harsh of a divide between major entertainment industries, voice acting, acting, singing...etc are taken equally seriously by the public at large. This also means voice actors on average have a wider range of skills. For example, it is common for voice actors to sing professionally / perform the songs / scenes that stem from their anime voice acting roles." Given that I was speaking off the cuff in that section, I used the word "multitalented" to summarize that idea, haha.
