For anyone wondering, the boulder thing could be for two reasons. Either 1: the boulders could have the chance to weigh down a fishing net that is already in motion. Or 2(the more likely): the trolling nets that get pulled along afterwards have a chance to catch on the rocks which will typically result in the nets breaking, this releases any already caught fish, and makes the fishing boats waste time and money fixing it😊
@aRealAndHumanManThing9 ай бұрын
mostly the second thing. Those nets can go well into six figures iirc, so it'll pretty much reset their income to zero if the net is damaged enough. Also, if it can't be fixed on board, the trawler has to drive back home with less or no catch, resulting in massive operation cost without profit and disrupting all financial flow

@Ashakins123Ай бұрын
Couldn't it also scare the fish away? The movement in the water could make them scatter, resulting in less going in the nets. Probably not the main reason they did it, since the two you listed would be more efficient, but still.

Since the poster talked about payphones, it was before most people had cellphones, so like 80s or 90s. Nobody was thinking about suing the shit out of people for everything. The one time missionaries knocked on her door asking if she knew about Jesus, she said she did (recovering Catholic) and told them she wanted to give them something, then pulled her Bridget's Cross from over the door and handed it to them. The Cross of Bridget is a pagan symbol made from corn husk that is meant to ve hung over doorways to ward off evil. She had two of them, at the time. And she gave one to a missionary. for the confusion about how boulders disrupt industrial fishing(the question posed during the reading around 33:00) deep fishing is usually done using nets. nets that tangle and tear when caught on something, especially when said objects have more heft each than the entire mass of the catch the nets are intended for. dropping the boulders on them leaves them torn up, which makes them useless.

One day it got really bad and I needed my higher dose anxiety pill. The bottle says "take up to 2 pills per day". They're so effective on me that it actually makes me fall asleep, and so I only take a quarter of a pill. Nurse decided to be entitled and say she knew better than me, so she insisted I took 2 pills. Also as with the other reply I have severe anxiety. I was in the nurse constantly because my panic attacks would end in either nausea or a migraine or sometimes make me feel like im going to pass out. At one point my teachers banned me from leaving the classroom if i was having a panic attack. Ended up throwing up in class one time. High school wasnt much better, but they let me go down the the nurse when i didnt feel well because it was around covid when i started high school. I ended up dropping out to be homeschooled because of my anxiety tho.

op was in a legitimate emergency situation. Life or death over the foolishness of the staff. They had every right to make that call, and i have no doubt that there wasnt a soul on that crew that felt that the call was even remotely frivolous. Im sure there was some serious discussion after op got their insulin between the firefighters and the staff about just how bad it really was, i know i would if i were one of them. You dont deny a child their medication, no matter what it is or what you think about its necessity. A doctor said they have to take it, a doctor isnt going to give them medication if its not necessary. I understand having the medication in the nurse's office (i dont agree, but i understand because as a child i had minor medication that i had in the nurse's office so the policy is familiar), what i dont understand is the idea of denying a student their prescribed medication just because you dont wanna go over, unlock a door, let them get their dose, then lock it back up afterwards if theres some security reason to lock it up. Or just letting the child in question keep their medication with them if the nurse cant be there when they need said medication

I watch another channel and news stories with similar conclusions crop up a handful of times a year, usually the perpetrator is trying to open the door inflight and normally exclaiming "Jesus told me to do it". That channel describe flights as "little dictatorships in the sky" since the flight crew will do anything in their power to ensure the safety of all passengers, and this is the easiest form of restraint until the flight can land and authorities can take over.

the story about using a computer (~31:00) in school reminded me of my school in germany. I had really bad handwriting because of motor issues (im now 25 and if i write cursive it looks like a 2nd grader wrote that shit). In my elementary school (grade 1-4) we were FORCED to write in cursive, or get 0 points on our answers to tests. And when I got into 'High School' (called Gymnasium in germany, grades 5-12) i asked about using a laptop to take notes and was denied. Funnily enough it never occurred to me that the teachers were no longer enforcing cursive, so i kept writing my terrible cursive and losing points on basically every test because of it, even though i could have written in normal letters, which for me is way easier to write. Then in grade 10 i got one of my teachers i had for a couple of years at that point asking me if i'd like to use a laptop to take notes and even my tests and that made me chuckle. She absolutely exploded on me for daring to laugh in her face when she made a suggestion trying to help me so i wasn't allowed to use a laptop in her class either (though i probably wouldnt have bothered to carry around a laptop for just 1 subject anyways).

33:30 To clarify how the rocks work and why they are placed in the first place, deep fishing is a form of fishing where the net is dragged across the seafloor. The addition of heavy objects with jagged edges ensures that any net that encounters one will be torn to shreds. As the risk-profit calculation is completely skewed to the risk side, fishing vessels will avoid these locations. Greanpeace does this to create pockets where fish colonies can survive as fishing is no longer possible in these areas, thus counteracting overfishing. Greed today by destroying the future of one's own profession is something I cannot wrap my head around.

I can totally relate to the school insulin story. My school required me to keep my RESCUE inhaler in the nurses office. All it took was one asthma attack and me calling 911. My mom forced the school to pay the hospital bill, and they got into a lot of trouble for locking an emergency medical device behind a door.

in middle school me and my best friend had horrible sensory problems in gym (both undiagnosed neurodivergent at that point, diagnosed now). I was allowed to go sit on the bleachers whenever I was overwhelmed. So to piss off the gym coach (she was sexist and ableist and I hated her anyway), Whenever I noticed he wasn’t doing too well and was sitting out or leaning against the wall, I’d just leave what I was doing, whatever it was, to sit with him and give him a big hug and hold him close until he either calmed down or until I ended up walking him to the office to call his sister to take him home if it was too bad. Never got in trouble, pissed her tf off. I eventually got taken out of gym due to me getting too bad with my sensory problems, but while I was there I did my best to comfort him. To this day he’s still my best friend :D

The best example of chaotic good that I know of is sorta like the situation at 13:15. In 1972, a guy held up a Chase Manhattan bank in Brooklyn to pay for his trans lover's MtF surgery. He also bought pizza for the tellers with the stolen money and threw a ton of money out to the gathering crowd.👌 (psst: a movie was made out of this. dog day afternoon starring al pacino.)

In regards to the Jogging problem, in order to still get exercise without increasing value, consider walking/jogging backwards every other day. The weirdness should cancel things out.

When I worked at a grocery store I worked in the hot foods department and when people I worked with who weren't making very much money as it was would come up with a bunch of hot foods I would tilt the scale up so that it would take the weight off and lower the price drastically so people that had like $12 of food paid like $3 for it because I knew that they were in hard circumstances

33:22 my guess is that it hinders fishing using big nets that drag across the ocean floor. I know that’s a thing in commercial fishing, in Sweden we call it “trålare” if I’m not mistaken. In english it’s “Fishing trawler”. You basically have a huge net that you drag across the ocean floor to catch fish, this can ruin the vegetation and life on the ocean floor and when the nets break off they’re usually just left to float around. The floating nets are called “ghost nets” and many sea creatures often get tangled up in them and die. The boulders would intercept the nets as they need a flat-ish ocean floor to drag em across. Boulders ruin that flat surface, would ruin the nets (therefor discouraging said fishing) and gives little hidy-holes to many different crabs and fishes and so on :D

The boulders keep ppl from deep sea fishing by ripping their nets, rendering them useless
