HOW MANY SETS & REPS?
-
The important thing to remember about sets and reps and how many you should do is this: there is NOT a single "right" or "best" way. Even this video is just a guideline, not a law. It sounds hokey but as long as you're pushing yourself, keeping great technique, and progressively lifting more weight over time...you're going to make progress. You will get stronger, more defined, and increase your endurance. There's no way around it.
-
That said, there are some general guidelines that can help you stay on track towards your goals and better understand the process. Just don't get caught up in the minutiae and think the precise number of sets and reps will make or break your progress - it won't.
-
STRENGTH movements (squats, deadlifts, presses, etc) are the heaviest and should be done at the beginning of your workout. 3-5 sets of 1-5 reps per set with 2-5min rest between sets for full recovery. Keep in mind, unless you're an elite lifter, there's not much reason to go below 3 reps per set.
-
HYPERTROPHY is a fancy word for "muscle growth" and should be done after your strength work. 3-5 sets of 6-12 reps per set with 1-2min rest between sets. Your muscles will be pumpeddddd.
-
ENDURANCE is a dark, dark magic created by Lord Voldemort himself which is why I don't do much of it. But on a serious note most of us meat heads would do well to incorporate more if, for nothing else, general health. Do it at the tail end of your workouts for 2-3 sets of 12-20+ reps per set and 30-75sec rest between sets. This is far from fun and should honestly be pretty uncomfortable. You can also do these as "timed sets" where you set the clock (i.e. for 60 seconds) and work non-stop until time runs out.
-
I hope this helps and, any questions, drop em below.

You and I are going to drink a lot of coffee together. Like, borderline dangerous amounts of coffee.
So, first things first. Pour yourself a mug and I’ll introduce myself real quick.
My name’s Jordan - but everyone calls me “J” - and I’m a 27th degree black belt in chugging coffee.
I’m also strength & nutrition coach, I hold several powerlifting world records, and I’ve been fortunate enough to have my writing featured in a variety of outlets like CNN, the Huffington Post, and Schwarzenegger.com.
But listen.
This channel isn’t for fame, publicity, cash, props, fist bumps, likes, pings, pows or whatever else there is.
It’s a place where you and I can chat.
I’ll never sugar coat, lie, or beat around the bush. I’ll tell you everything exactly as I see it. Some stuff you might like. Others you might not.
And that’s totally cool.
Either way, my goal here is to create a discussion. A place where you and I can get together, exchange ideas, and motivate each other to be better every day.
Like I said, we’re gonna drink a lot of coffee together - borderline dangerous amounts - but I’m excited. Because there aren’t too many online communities in which the sole purpose is to inspire and motivate one another.
And that’s exactly what you and I are going to do here.
To your success,
-J

Appreciate the video and great information. Have been pushing my bench press reps WAY too high according to your chart, anywhere from 8-12 reps. Started doing only 4 reps of each weight level starting a few days ago and resting for 3-4 mins. between sets. Have increased my max weight by 20 lbs. in just two workouts and looking forward to continued progress. Fewer reps, more rest between sets. This is how we learn, sharing information. Thanks!

Great video, thank you. Could you do a workout that starts with strength, then does hypertrophy then finishes with endurance? Could you do just one set of each or would you need to do more of each, and what rest would you recommend between changing protocol? I am returning to exercise post surgery so I guess I am a novice. Thank you.

Upper - lat pull down Lower - leg press Question for rest time. I like to do 2 exercises at a time usually wit opposite muscle groups. I do this to save time in the gym. So if for example I'm doing chest press and back row and working in the hypertrophy range. Can I go from one to the other or should I still rest between sets the suggested time between each. My assumption is that I am using the rest time whike doing the opposite muscle group. Tks

thanks for the info i sub and watched your other strength video. I have a question though im a boxer and i feel like as a boxer i should be able to lift heavy especially because i may pick up wrestling/jiu jitsu so that i can be well rounded. maybe it improves my punches too. Anyways in boxing gyms and even online you always hear about how boxing and weight lifting doesnt go together and you have most boxers just squatting or simulating punches with overhead press variations. This video beautifully sums up my question because as you said endurance can cause strength training to accumulate hypertrophy. Im wondering if boxing trainings endurance does just that to weight lifting and if i should just avoid it altogether. And if not what program do you recommend? Also i was screwing up just up till a month ago because i wasnt taking enough protein and based on your other video i saw the importance of maintaining weight because from my strength training i feel like i did bulk up and i actually went from 185 to 197. My diet was horrible because i dont compete yet so im gonna work on nutrition next. Another thing i do is i work on muscle tension training where i try to push an immovable object as hard as i can for a couple seconds, was wondering if that a good thing to continue working on.

Love u man❤ perfect video I was seeking for, do you have sample work out for each goal? So i want to have lean look so shall I do strength and endurance with cardio in one session or just need to do strength training with Cardio? Still I am confuse shall I just do endurance or should also include strength? As if strength get increased I will lift more weight for endurance which eventually will give hypertrophy? Please answer

I couldn't wait to find out what your drawing was for endurance...fire, huh!? Okay, I could honestly say DEADLIFT for lower AND upper body, but I'll go with it for lower body! For upper body, I'm going with SQUATS (specifically performed in the 20-rep style aka Super Squats, breathing squats, etc). Also, I remember a 'few' years ago when Tom Platz wanted to increase the size of his UPPER body (particularly his arms to help balance out his symmetry), he inreased the volume and intensity of his squats...and amazingly, he added more than an inch to his arms!! I'd definitely rock that tee when I set my next deadlift world record! Great info 👍
