A quick review of the speedskim we use, the Refina plastic Spatula. Used for the last 2 1/2 years. We love it, and think it’s tbe best on the market.

Just bought the refina plaziflex spatula, I'm not a plaster by trade, but this spatula is brilliant to use. Great video 👍

Thanks alot for the video and sharing your knowledge experience expertise and information it was brilliant and just what I was looking for as I too have a refina spatula and wanted to know if I could renew or fix any problems with the blade without buying a new one or different brand which I'm glad I didn't as I don't need to do either thanks to you also you showed why refina is the better brand and showed how to use it which was a great refresh for me so you absolutely nailed it with the content for the video I'm a carpenter by trade so it's been a while since I used a hawk and trowel lol but do alot of plastering and bonding plaster boarding myself when doing a renovation even went back to college to get good anyway thanks again keep up the great work..

Equally good presenting as your work. Good, honest review. 👍🏻. I’m yet to buy one as I’m a complete novice but you’ve sold me.

Great vids mate. You’ve earned a new sub. I noticed you taking the plaster off your spat. I thought during a first coat you don’t want to take any of the plaster off while it’s wet.

Thanks for the comment Marcus We often apply the plaster a little thicker and use the spats to flatten as well as straighten. As such more comes off. Hope this answers the qs.

@@AlexMorleyPlastering Thanks for the answer mate. I’m 35 and trying to learn - probs too old now. Tried 6 months ago and it was a travesty. Too fat and unfit. Over 2 stone down and lifting weights since so tried again today. Still not great but much better than the first time.

Hi Marcus 35 isn’t too old at all. There is an advantage to that as you haven’t killed your self smashing massive sets in your 20s. I would focus on smaller sets. Domestic work if you can. Try and build up to roughing on with 1 1/2 bags lay down with 3/4 bag. Twice a day is a fair amount. You will cream the money. Lifting weights will make a massive difference. Especially focus on your forearms. Stamina for this job builds up really fast.

@@AlexMorleyPlastering Thanks for the comprehensive reply buddy. I appreciate it. Sorry for another long response, but anyway… My motivation is purely my own house. I bought a renovation project, paid it off, and now I’m saving to do it all up but I want to do as much as I can. Though I wouldn’t mind making some extra money with weekend warrior work outside my job! 🤣 Sorry if this is a bit cheeky, but are you planning on more full tutorial videos? I would love to see a video on KZfaq where somebody takes a high res camera up close to the plaster during different stages, gives it a poke, and says at this stage this is what you do to the plaster, how much or how little water. I had my second practice this week on the same old wall in my house. Much better the second time around, fewer hollows etc. but I cocked it all up on the wet trowel. Not sure if I hit it with water too early or too late, or with too much. Left fatty streaks everywhere that once started couldn’t be pulled off with the trowel.

Hi Alex, great videos. Can I ask, have you ever flattened skim with the Refina Plaziflex? Would it be the same as the plastic speedkim you using here?
@AlexMorleyPlastering
@AlexMorleyPlastering 2 жыл бұрын
I do have one. I wouldn’t recommend it tbh, end of the day if your going to use a trowel, might as well use a firmer one. Not only that the blades wear out relatively quickly on a plastic blade trowel.

I sometimes give it a quick flatten with MT then straight over it with plaziflex then after that trowel up as normal

Hi. What grade is the blade your using ? Im looking to buy one but want the firmer bkade to flatten rather than a super flexible blade or do they just come in one type from refina ? Cheers

Hi mate, do you have to break it in or are the edges rounded off so the don't leave lines ?
@AlexMorleyPlastering
@AlexMorleyPlastering 3 жыл бұрын
Not really. Tbh, these are meant to flatten rather than give give a flawless finish. Though they are very easy to put an edge on with a bit of sand paper.

How's it going Alex I have a nela spat looks fairly similar to the refina just noticed the blade is warped it's a metal blade it's .3 in thickness so very flexi wondering can it be straightened? or is this a big issue ? Can it still be used? By the way I'm carpenter by trade just do occasional skimming so excuse my ignorance thanks a mill Colm
@AlexMorleyPlastering
@AlexMorleyPlastering 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Colm We have had a few metal spats, most have rippled on the blade. Unfortunately we never found a way to straighten them. With regards to whether it effects the finish, you will be the best judge of that if you shine a light down the wall just after using it. Though, generally on the very flexible blades they do bend back into place. That said as the video suggest we prefer plastic. I wouldn’t switch back.
