Here are my thoughts on the Anytone 878. Two notes that are incorrect in the video. It is a little over $300. It can be found for under $300 on some websites. I said it includes the speaker mic. It does not.

To be fair, FT-5 does drop to almost anytone prices, during black friday or random sales it does come in at around 375 with Yaesu 50$ rebate that puts it into the 325 range. Won't say that it's a night and day difference, but Yaesu does feel just a little bit more solid and analogue receive is just a smidge more pleasant. At any rate Anytone is my daily driver for the DMR support alone. In DMR space there's simply nothing else that comes close.

I have the 878 model for 2 years. The only thing I dislike is the volume has a missing (dead) invisible gap. The volume starts from low (zero), when you turn it up then picks up at #3 mark, you have to set in the menu (indoor / out door mode). If dropped the battery will seperate from radio and when scanning, radio will pause on a ghost signal in VFO then resume scanning. Other than that a great radio, great review.

A company called "brotect" makes a screen protector for the 878. Took about a month to ship to me in the USA. It fits really well and doesn't change the screen quality.

The AT is not hard to program. It just needs to be learned. But! No one, not one person has ever said that the audio from any of my 5 AT's (578' & 878's) was anything except exceptional. In fact, ham's often ask me what radio and microphone I'm using. And DMR! I can add a repeater on the fly and talk all around the world.

I really like this radio, I was gifted my AT D-878UV+ from my long-time ham friend ( we've been wanting to try DMR to try to catch up with the times LOL) he has the +ii version - mine is the UV+ . both of us have been hams for 40 years -whew! that went fast! back in the early 1990s I bought one of those - almost unheard of dual band Yaesu FT-530's all in all, it cost me a little over $700 dollars! I was terrified to take it anywhere because I thought I'd drop it or I'd let it lay around and it would go missing... all of this back-story ( us hams like to gab! :D ) is that with this radio I'm not afraid to take it along - it's so stout , it's got great output audio, it's easy to read the display. heck and that's just the cosmetics of the thing! The receiver is excellent, and it transmits very well - plenty of punch- even with the stock antenna. I bought one of those Nagoya 24-j - mile long antennas which really is a good antenna but it hangs out of the car window whilst driving LOL . the battery , even under heavy use , holds up extremely well. can't really go wrong with one of these HT's . I'm still learning the whole DMR thing - Had this radio about 4-5 months now. my county here in Pennsylvania is saturated with plenty of DMR repeaters, and there's still a large amount of analog machines here too, so having a digital/analog radio is more than advantageous. I wouldn't hesitate to buy a second AT D-878UV+ or the newer model. excellent quality , I feel confident that I'll have this rig for a long time. add a better antenna than the one provided, but the original will get you through until you can pick one up. the Bluetooth button is a nice touch too, albeit it drives my wife up the wall when we're both in the car,she calls it 'radio racket ' LOL! she's not a radio enthusiast like myself and our kids. 73 thanx for the cool vid !

Fully agree,the high price flagship radio’s are getting to a price point that you can’t use them for what they are designed to do because of the risk of damage .Looking at the new Anytone for that same reason,you could possibly include the Yaesu FT70 in the same conversation

I don't feel that the FT70 is in the same league as the Anytone. The FT70 is an amazing radio, but I would put it at the top of the mid-range. It lacks dual VFOs. It doesn't have the cleared menu system. It does have YSF, which is awesome.

For high-price radios, buy commercial equipment. Sure, the high-end stuff is seriously expensive, but it's built to take a beating over a ten-year service life in public safety or industrial use. Drops, dunks, rain, and dust won't faze it.

Hey man, i have a request, so today for the first time i saw a suggested video on motorolla r7 radio. and next to it was ur video. so i am watching a video about radios for the very first time. i am into offroading a little bit, watch videos and just know that they use radios to communicate with a spotter or few vehicles around them. could u make a video about just a radio, what are its uses, why one need one and what can be done with it. i am all i know is you can talk to a person that is around u without shouting. what are the ranges. i mean in some disaster movies i hve seen scenes where someone sitting in a bunker saying something and someone on the other side of the world is replying to them. is it real? how it operates and i mean it will be a good introduction to someone totally new to radion. thanks and i subbed")
@kd9nrt
@kd9nrt Жыл бұрын
I can try to explain this. When they talk on the other side of the world, they are using HF. This radio runs off VHF/UHF, which is much higher in frequency. Range is typically line of sight, but is usually longer as propagation can cause variation. Without a repeater, a point to point signal for these is around 10-ish miles, give or take. If you are over water, it can travel further. If you are in a rocky area, maybe a little less. These are just ballpark numbers. I'll do a video talking about it.

I would only resent that you said in the video that you don't like people who speak DMR. Maybe in your country these are not quality people, but in mine only DMR has come to life and quality people use it. Thank you for the video you made, because I haven't laughed so much in a long time. I was laughing so hard that tears were coming out of my eyes. My first encounter with Anyton was with the question: What did I pay so much money for? My biggest failure in life. Later I realized that there is no competition for this device and that it is DMR. My only complaint is that it is not IP 67 standard and that they did not make a better quality receiver both on the handheld and on the mobile. But my comment is: Despite all the flaws that Anyton has, it is still the best quality device that can be bought on the planet. Thanks again for the laugh you gave me with this video

HA! I feel this video. I own two TH-D74 HTs, and I own the Anytone shown in this video. I LOVE the D74, and if I am planning to do packet stuff or APRS, then I take the D74 and a couple of extra batteries. The whole time I worry I will damage it. I call it my “Princess” radio. I don’t really do D-Star and I find I use a DMR hotspot a lot more often than I would use a D-Star repeater. If I really want to do D-Star, I can crossmode through my hotspot with the Anytone. For doing all the practical stuff, and not dealing with battery/damage anxiety, the Anytone wins. It even has more power if I need that little extra to make the repeater. Having said all of that, it isn’t my daily driver. This boils down to three factors for me: 1. I don’t have the newest one so Analog APRS RX is out. Messaging is out. I have to use the D74 if that is what I am doing. 2. The Anytone is shaped like a brick and feels awful in my hand. 3. It is not submersible. Highly resistant to water, yes. But it is not IP67. So, if I am not needing APRS, my EDC radio is the Aliunce HD1. It is IP67 (and I have actually tested that), and it is shaped like a Motorola Sabre. It feels fantastic in hand, and the battery is a good as the Anytone. The battery is also absurdly cheap (like $29 cheap). So, I have several. Mostly I carry it because it is a capable radio that is indestructible and costs me about $150. Now if I am “dressing up” for a hamfest or something, then I flex a bit with the D74, of course. LOL But, I do plan on getting the latest Anytone with full APRS. When that happens, it will become my daily driver because then I will have a tank with APRS.

@hamhouke
@hamhouke Жыл бұрын
@@kd9nrt Honestly, I am shocked that the big names keep repackaging radios without modern features, IP67 durability, tri-band capability, etc and calling them innovative with huge price tags. I mean really, ICOM puts out what is functionally equivalent to Woxun basic dual band without so much as a modern display and people fall all over themselves to pay almost $300 for it. Really? They keep putting out the same radio over and over. The D74 still doesn’t have a competitor and it’s run it’s course and been discontinued. I swear that ICOM and Yaesu are doing nothing but coasting on clout in the HT market. Kenwood has exited the field. Anytone is doing good things in the middle tier, but no one is making a feature rich ham HT anymore in the high end. Why don’t all the high end radios have full APRS implementations, TNCs and sound cards built in, USB and Bluetooth CAT control and audio profiles? You should be able to plug a single USB C cable into any top-end HT or connect Bluetooth and do packet/VARA stuff today. Hell, if someone made an HT that was marketed for Sat work with true dual receive, maybe a sat tracker app on it with audio recording, they would sell out before they were shipped. Where are the SSB HTs for SOTA? The manufacturers get so hung up on HT Repeater use cases they seem to forget all the other stuff you can do with them, especially Techs out there who would like to do more than that without upgrading their ticket. It is FRUSTRATING to see cool features on an HT only to learn that they hadn’t been made in 10 years and the “successors” just dropped the feature that made them cool with no replacement. Why is it that the most capable HT ever made was released in 2016 and is now discontinued without a replacement or equivalent? That does not happen in any other consumer electronic market. What if phones manufacturers put out new models every year and just decided to not include texting, or 5G? Maybe our new flagship phone should ship without a camera this year… Would not happen.

I have had a Yaesu VX 170 for 20 years. Had to replace the battery with an aftermarket. It is built like a tank, dropped it from the top of the refrigerator, off a 2nd floor balcony, and barely a scratch. Excellent volume! Bought an Anytone 3 years ago, was frustrated with it, and put it away for 2 years. I dug it out a few weeks ago, and earnestly watched about a hundred short videos on KZfaq about it, and changed my mind about it. Not easy software, but not as daunting as I thought a few years ago. It is a radio originally designed as a business radio. It is designed to do almost anything, too much in my opinion, and if I were King, I would eliminate half the shit from the radio and software. It was adopted by the amateur industry. I would have to agree with this commenter.

The UI is limited, but very easy to manage and learn. It has excellent sound quality when paired with a good antenna, 2m / 70cm, scans well, and you can own a zillion of them for worst-case scenarios and distribution in your network of prepared people. 9:00 Yaesu indeed feels ancient and hard to program, but still I like it. Last week I tried to program the Yaesu ft70 and it took me some time as a 22 year old grown up with computers. Still they gave clear instructions for the programming and if you read them all the way, I think anyone can program a Yaesu. What I really like about the software, is that it is soo rudimentary. This makes it more likely that it will work on future and older computers, even if Yaesu goes out of business. It just makes the Yaesu radios feel like less of a planned obsolescence product.

In the UK Anytone AT-D878UVII "PLUS" (GPS, Bluetooth, APRS, 500K contacts, international wideband, with single battery) was sold during a prolonged "special offer" on UK Moonrackeronline for 179 Pounds until recently and the European restricted band version with Bluetooth push-to-talk finger button which I bought for 199 Pounds w/o delivery cost of few Pounds because the cheaper international variant was out of stock, and I thought that prices go higher because of crazy US prices people were will willing to pay, so you could, at least until recently, order international shipping from UK into the US and perhaps still pay less than overpriced offers on Anytone in the US. I was buying some radios from the US and customs did not mind so far, but you may pay taxes twice though, so check your local laws and customs restrictions. It's often worth checking international offers because unless people stop willing to pay for overpriced local offers, companies don't stop asking for more. Remember, supply and demand, if you want to reduce prices, you need to stop being willing to pay extra for a limited local supply, otherwise you shooting yourself into a foot by artificially creating inflation, thus devaluating your paycheck and savings every time you are willing to pay extra for being lazy to search for the best offer, so it's up to you how much will be your Dollar worth and how much worse will be next generation due to people that are willing to throw money on every problem requiring effort instead of doing the right thing...

DMR is not my cup of tea, either. The '878 isn't bad, but there are a couple of things I really loathe about it. First is the boot time, which is annoyingly atrocious...mine clocks in at over 15 seconds. Any other HT I own, including the cheapest Baofeng...switch it on and it's ready to go in milliseconds. Also, my Yaesu FT-70D is a fairly significant step up from the '878 in receive sensitivity, as measured on a service monitor. Even a 40 year old Icom ICxAT series does better. On the plus side, the Anytone has exceptional battery life, the build quality is decent, and the audio (in analog mode) is excellent.

You don't like DMR; you've made that clear. But some operators do like it. Here in New England, it's the most active of the digital VHF/UHF modes. Currently the AnyTone is the best of the ham-oriented DMR radios, so if you're looking to operate DMR it's a winner. It also works well as an analog radio. Motorola DMR radios are a separate discussion. They have better RF performance and they're very rugged, but they're expensive, not particularly ham radio friendly (you can't directly program frequencies from the front panel), and the programming software is expensive. And then there is the RFinder, a colossally expensive combination of an Android smartphone and a DMR handheld; there is nothing else like it and it makes DMR very convenient to set up and use, but it's a lot of money to spend on something where the phone portion will be obsolete in three years.

878UV+ is a "OK" radio. The only problem I had with it was that it hangs in the worst moments. SW is unstable especially for DMR. So I switched to the FT5D. But for analog it's very good. Good modulation, good speaker and good battery. My advice: don't buy Baofeng, buy Anytone. Once you start using 878, you will never go back to Baofeng. The gap between Baofeng and Anytone is like the Stone Age and the 90s. 878 feels like Nokia from the late 90s. Very intuitive menu. Solid choice if you cannot afford or you don't want to spend so much for high-end. I didn't want to spend so much for FT5D so I bought 878UV+ but finally I ended up with FT5D anyway. So it's better to thing twice than spend twice. :)

The Anytone is fun, but the quality of APRS on it is awful. Especially compared with the Yaesu

$315! Yikes! Maybe I should not get my license. I have toyed with the idea, since I am already doing a lot with radio. But prices just discourage me. I could easily make an all mode HF transceiver with about 100 watts output, more than enough for planetary coverage on a good night. But, VHF and UHF parts are much more expensive for making a transceiver. Thus, buying a transceiver is probably more cost effective, verses making one. The one I make will not have all the options that a factory made one has either, whereas a homemade HF transceiver will be really loaded with goodies I put in it. Ironically, the entry level license disallows most HF operations, which is what is easy for me to make. But, it allows VHF and UHF operations, the transceivers that are hard for me to make. Maybe I will just stay a hobbyist and forego the license, once again.

A new Lamborghini is $300,000. That doesn't stop people from getting reasonably priced cars. The 878 isn't the floor. It is more like the 10th floor.

@@kd9nrt You are addressing someone who has had the same vehicle for 27 years because of what the payments and price have become and how ugly the modern cars have become. I saw small transceivers in Amazon going for $20 to about $150. However, what kind of transceiver would I be getting? They are likely all 4 watts with FM mode only and no advanced digital capabilities, nor multiple bands. I think I will likely stay just a hobbyist. People bring me radios to repair and I love listening to my communications receiver. I guess that is enough for me.

@@kd9nrt You don't have to use affiliate. It would be nice to be able to follow the links to the products anyway. Its a pain in the @$$ when I have to stop the video, write down what it is then google. Make things easier on your viewers.

I've used several older Icoms, Kenwoods, and Yaesus. On the DMR side I own the Hytera HP702, HP782, AnyTone 878, and TYT 390 w/ OpenGD77. I love them all but if my life depended on it, the Hyteras are built the best and transmit/receive further than the 878 even with the same diamond SRJ77CA antenna connected. OpenGD77 has some pretty cool features as well though. The 390 with open gd-77 might be the best bargain solution if you're willing to go through all of that reprogramming.

I’m 9 minutes into this video and I wish I was sitting across from you with a ruler to slap your hand every time you touch the radio….. Stop touching it and just talk about it lol. Then you complain because it won’t stay in frame but you keep moving it lol…. In your opinion would the anytone work as good on GMRS as it does everything else? I only have my gmrs license so far, but will be getting my ham in January. Do you think it’s too much radio to start with? I have a baofeng BF-H6 right now and I’m looking to upgrade.

I had 3 Anytones. Analog squelch sensitivity sucks on all of them. 29$ UV5R blew away all 3. And yes, I got into test mode and adjusted squelch levels. No dice. Wx. on 162.4 good copy on Baofeng, Anytone won't even open squelch, all 3 were the same. They're gone.

Those gods of yours may be great radios, but they can’t beat the versatility of an Anytone 878. Even the lowly 878UVplus whoops the Kenwood TH-D74. I had one, a D74 that is and I was really let down by it. First of all there is no D-Star repeaters near me, so it was essentially useless. It didn’t even have a great analog front end, and for the price it damn sure should have. I sold it and got an 878UVplus V1 and I ain’t never looking back. Plus I’m not afraid to actually use the 878 out and about.

Anytone with adhesive label.... how can you know who's the manufacturer? Incredibly slow scanner and poor sensitivity. Thats why Japanese brands still ask for money, they are better in any aspect. Solution? Buy a used Yaesu, it's simple.
