Thanks for the walkthrough, Bob. I taught part of a tech class right after the question pool changed, and had to buy some digital radios (DMR) to educate myself. I was not very effective, and am still struggling with these digital radios(granted, it has been put on the back burner throughout the summer.) Still, they are really hard to program, even with the software, the programming youtube video playing, and all your data accessible. Keep up the great work on your videos.

Good morning from central Florida. Enjoy your channel, very informative. I am new to HAM radio, got my General ticket 09/04/2018. No radios yet, that will happen, looking forward to getting on the air. I noticed that you talked about the AnyTone /APRS capability. BridgeCom Systems and David Casler both have videos for the setup of APRS on the 878. Don't if this helps or not. Just thought I would throw this out to you. Thank you for your channel and all you do to promote HAM radio. Jeff, KN4OTZ, 73.

I almost pulled the trigger on this radio, then at a club meeting where they went through all the different types of digital radios, they said the DMR type were originally designed for the commercial market and are more difficult to program, needing software to program (talking about the digital side of it). The Yaesu and Icom (C4FM and D-star) are designed for/by amateurs and the yaesu can be set up from the front panel if you need to add repeaters etc if you are in a new area. Plus there are many more C4FM or D-star repeaters than DRM (only one) in my area.

Bob in response to Mr.Poole I'll say this. As Hams we use the tools we have in our tool box to accomplish our goals as Ops as you often say. I can't have a HF Antenna, yes it damn well makes me crazy at times. The D868UV has been a lifesaver for me. You ask why? Well I've said it before I live in very rural Western Iowa, there is 1 repeater 35 miles away from where I live. It's your run of the mill analog Repeater. No Digital modes at all. I have a ZumSpot 2 and also a OpenSpot 2. I want to keep my 868 in the Truck and use the 878 at home. This is my reality, I enjoy it and make the most of it.

I still like the radio and have been reading about hotspots that can work over all radio types, so it may still be the main option, especially at the price.

I posted this on Eric's channel. My review of the AT-D8X8 models. Want to love it. But still have some hang-ups with it. But most could be fixed with software / firmware.

I currently have the Anytone D868. Would love this radio, but have some simple gripes, I suspect could be fixed with firmware updates. (1) Slow boot, takes 10.9 seconds to turn on! (2) Volume level screen, overlays on top of entire display?! So annoying! Needs to change to a vertical on the right side, empty space, or something.
@cognetic
@cognetic 4 жыл бұрын
(3) When in FM Radio mode, when I turn the volume knob, the radio cuts out, then back on again. (4) Can't engage Group ID, to change talk group, while a digital call is progress. (5) The 3100mah High Capacity battery is champion on battery life. But it's fat and ugly. Much prefer the 2100mah. (6) The stock antenna is stiff and jabs into my side. Upgraded to an Expert Power love handle frendly version.

(7) Software has a little bit of a learning curve. But I got it. Took a few tries to figure out how to get the zones, channels, and scan lists all worked out. Had to duplicate channels to achieve goals. Thanks Bridgecomsys for the video walk throughs.

Thank you much for putting forth interesting and informative videos. As a new general Ham, I'm considering updating my HT and considering the 878UV Plus. While this HT does have APRS and GPS, you mentioned it was not "full featured" APRS. I'm not sure what that means. It appears to be able to run a beacon. Would you be able to let us know what "full features" of APRS are lacking, or less than adequate? Thanks again. 73 K4QJS
@K6UDA
@K6UDA 4 жыл бұрын
Full featured APRS is much more than just beaconing out your position. You can see other APRS users, connect with them on other frequencies, send and reply to direct messages, send and receive text messages and emails to non hams with phones and computers, utilize satellites, get weather telemetry and more.

@@K6UDA Ahh, thank you...hmm, does that mean that the Yaesu and Kenwood HTs that you mentioned (if I remember correctly) are full featured, and so are able to see other APRS users, send text, emails etc?

Bluetooth on this 1.13 radio is sketchy. Spend more time using it and you'll find in addition to recurring audio & ptt disconnects you'll get "carrier no audio".when using BT. Great basics. Good position reporting. BT currently a letdown for those who really plan on handsfree ops.

Amateurs who whine about how difficult it is to write a programming file need to find another hobby. At one time, the hobby was interesting because it was challenging. Now, new hams don’t want to have to learn anything because they’ve been brought up in a plug and play world.

I’m sick and tired of hearing that the Amateur Radio Service was created primarily for emergency communications. Total nonsense. “Amateur radio, also known as ham radio, is the use of radio frequency spectrum for purposes of non-commercial exchange of messages, wireless experimentation, self-training, private recreation, radiosport, contesting, and emergency communication.” Exactly what percentage of your radio time throughout the time you’ve been licensed has actuality been spent on EmComm? I’ve never purchased a ham radio in my life for its ability to do anything “on the fly.”
@K6UDA
@K6UDA 4 жыл бұрын
Thankfully, real emergencies are pretty rare as a whole in our society. But we do have them. We have fires out my way with more frequency than we'd like to admit. I've personally used my radio skills on more than one occasion during an emergency. As a matter of fact, I used my radio to get a helicopter to come save a friend who's horse had slipped in a ravine and crushed him. Cell phone didn't work and the only thing we had was ham radio and a GPS. Ham radio saved my friend's life. As for needing to put a frequency in on the fly, Just this March, while working at a local hamfest, the group was operating on a frequency that wasn't pre programmed into my handheld. Because I was able to program on the fly, my handheld remained useful. There was also a few times where I stepped off a plane in a different city and was able to get on a local repeater because I could program my radio on the fly. Thanks for adding to the conversation. Makes it fun and interesting.
@rjlewis3932

K6UDA Yes it does make it interesting. I belong to 3 different radio clubs in SE Texas. One is ALL about EmComm. We have 3 repeaters and the only time they are used is for ARES and Skywarn nets. I don’t know if you remember, but in June, the town of Franklin, Texas was leveled by a tornado about 80 miles from our club. Ironically, our ARES/Skywarn was a huge fail. It was several hours before the net got organized. Texas Emergency Communications has been consolidated under the Texas Wide Area Radio Network based on P25. Since we had no interoperability and there were no amateur radio operators in Franklin, the information given and gained was all but useless. That being said, during Hurricane Harvey in 2017, Harris County ARES, did an outstanding job. My point is let’s not lose sight of the “fun” part of the hobby. Back in the “old days” circa 1990, we had some great ragchews several times a week. I think we’ve gotten lost in the technology and politics of the hobby is what I’m trying to say. Anyway, enjoy your perspective as always. 73 KC5RJL
