not really. if you are the only "athlete" in your country its much easier to qualify, than if there are 100 000 others who compete in the same sport with you. secondly, he didnt train in his home country, but in germany - which was world leading at luge at that time. so he got the best trainers and best equipment - which is both incredible important in that sport. in luge the first 10 or so are usually within 0.1-0.2 seconds. he qualified for the olympics with 6.15 seconds slower than the first... which is an absolutely laughable time. i really fail to see how this is impressive at all.

@@MrNukedawhales Only 6.15 seconds slower than the first? Wow!! That's really impressive. To be that close to the winner. The Olympics is top level. @@kasvinimuniandy4178 well, again... its not impressive. the ONLY reason he qualified was because of "national team size". thousands and thousand of athletes would have been faster, but they were born in the wrong country. the olympics should show the best athletes of the world, not someone who barely hangs on... and people like him make the olympics a joke.

@@MrNukedawhales but when you think about it, the Olympics, especially the Winter Olympics, is a parade of the nations with the most money input into their chosen sports. All the sliding events can only take place on special tracks, of which there are fewer than 20 in the world. The Olympics is a spectacle. Why would anyone watch if each event was majority filled by one nation? It's boring enough as it is seeing the same flags rise above the podiums at most events. This guy found a way to feature in an event rarely contested by people from impoverished nations. Good on him!

I was initially expecting the hoax in this video to be that the athlete competing was recruited from a different country or something of that sort. I'm glad that was not the case. Just wanted to put it out there, If Tonga had wanted to give another individual from a different country the status of a national then they could represent them in the Olympics. @@truenoae8689 The insane thing about this is not that they recruited them, even though that's pretty strange for such a xenophobic country, the problem is that they both broke the rules and their own laws! Only people of Chinese heritage can become citizens in CCP-China, China doesn't allow dual citizenship, so they must give up their own (unlikely that everyone did this) and they didn't play enough seasons for China to be allowed to attend for team China. But if you look at all the cheating done by Chinese athletes, biased judges (one judge was literally banned from other games because he was too biased, but now he's somehow allowed to judge again), changes in measurement technique, so they could disqualify athletes, foreign athletes who suddenly became COVID positive after their flight (not impossible, but unlikely), awful quarantine conditions, bad food and in general the enormous corruption of the IOC it's not very surprising. Personally I think that to a certain extent it's also the fault of the athletes, they _could_ have boycotted it, but they decided the take part in this propaganda extravaganza.

People saying he took the money instead of fighting for his goals legit clearly don't realize how sports works. Luge especially is expensive to participate in and learn, and Tonga just ain't got the money to fund that. He did what he had to IN ORDER to chase his goals, not INSTEAD OF. At the end of the day he was talented and determined enough to qualify legit, regardless of how he was funded in training and travel expenses.
@WWYD0

Money rules the world. People get miffed when someone isn't part of the wealthy few, they will do whatever they can to push you back down. Mr. Banani played the game and beat it. Well done.

The fact that he was still a random guy from Tonga, but instead chosen by a German corporation rather than trying to impress a princess, is just as (or more) interesting of a story. The whole hoax is "wait his backstory is made up," but it doesn't really matter if the truth is just as good.

Good for Bruno. I’d rather the hardworking athletes get some of that sponsorship money than the already corrupt and bloated IOC who did not invest half as much sweat, tears and toil as the athletes did.

The only perverse actions are those that write the rules cry foul to get their own way when the rules haven't been broken. This is typical Olympic committee crap.

amazing story.. a farmer son to an olympic winner. and to a sport which he probably never knew before. amazing 👏👏 as people on a country that never touch a snow, and to became an athlete in winter olympic itself is amazing. its pure hardwork.

This is genius. I don’t think it’s something that we should advocate for but I don’t think it’s right to call it a hoax. Being a sponsored athlete is extremely hard, sometimes you have to get creative.

It’s funny that people were upset. So upset that they tried to sue him, but couldn’t legally since he is actual country gave him a legal name change. And all he wanted was to make sure his family would be alright and to put his country on the map. Full support! I hope him and his family recover.

Similarly, what are the chances that you covered this one-of-a-kind story just during the time of the news of the largest volcanic eruption in 21st century and both happens to be related to Tonga !! For me, any marketing is ethical until it involves depriving someone of their rights. Talking of ambush marketing, Nike also did a similar thing back in 2012 Olympics, no one told them anything!!

The door for the Olympics for many athletes outside the wintersport powerhouses in Europe and North America (+ Japan) is more closed than ever - ever since the exploits of the Jamaican bobsled team and more so those of Eddie "The Eagle" Edwards in ski jumping, the IOC have placed strict qualifying criteria for athletes to cover in order to compete in the biggest multi-sport showcase. Thus it has become more and more closed for athletes from warm climate countries like those in Africa, Latin America, the Carribean, Southeast Asia and the tiny island nations in the Pacific. And training abroad for those athletes isn't cheap and they fund their trainings from their own pockets.
