I've always found this trope so weird...because why is the female MC finding it hard to pick between TWO BROTHERS?? There are billions of people on this planet and they pick the siblings, I miss the normal love triangles when it just involved two boys that literally don't share the same parents💀

It’s annoying, especially when one brother is the “bad” boy and one is the “good” brother. And it almost always consists of the girl choosing the good brother but then realizes she loves the bad brother. Also, almost always the girl is coming in between the brother’s relationship so that makes the girl hated by the audience. It’s just pointless.

I also don't like the lowkey purity politics with this trope because they always have the girls who were with the bad boy before seem sl***y while the main female lead isn't like that, and he learns how to value women by his love for her. Like can't he just treat women well from the jump?

The weirdest part for me is the potential "I once hooked up with my brother-in-law" weirdness should two of the three get married. Way to make family get-togethers awkward for everyone.

The tried-and-true outcome of every romantic love triangle is the girl choosing the more broody, emotionally unavailable, "bad" brother.

I'm glad the Kissing Booth didn't go in this direction.

I had a high school classmate who dated a guy, cheated with the older brother and married him. She had his baby not long after. Their family get togethers were hella AWKWARD. The younger brother eventually distanced himself from the family cause he felt that everybody just accepted it as she gave the parents grandchildren. Like they just moved on even when he was struggling to. It was really sad. I understand that it makes interesting TV, but I could never defend this behavior in real life! 🤦🏼‍♀️

I can't stand this trope at all. But I also can't stand the "usual" love triangle trope as well. I always think if the third party is not able to choose between people then they should just fucking leave it and choose no one. She only had romantic love for one of them and was friends with the other, but the friend was romantically interested so the brothers ended up fighting and she left both of em 😂

I hate love triangles. I especially hate the brother love triangles. My sisters got caught in something like this. Where they ended up dating the same guy. Like he literally dated one of them until she broke it off and then he just moved on to my other sister. It was so weird and caused a lot of problems. Luckily him and my other sister broke up and my sisters are on better terms now but it was a weird time when that happened. So overall this trope just weirds me out so much for so many reasons.

I'm glad you're talking about it! LET'S WAKE IT UP! Even in high school, as I watched The Vampire Diaries it was the plot device I hated most about the show. It aggravated me how Elena couldn't decide between Damen and Stefan, and how it would hurt both characters when she was dating or flirting with one instead of the other. Same thing with The Summer I Turned Pretty. In TVD's case, Elena's character really suffered as a whole in my eyes because she came insufferable. I couldn't understand how she couldn't decide and it hurt me to see her hurt them - because they're real characters with feelings too - and I think that this bit is often lost when the writers are funneling this story through the characters. Also, nobody speaks about the "real-world" ramifications of them dating the same girl. When they break up, how are the brothers meant to reconcile and repair their sibling relationship? And if the FMC's relationship with one of the brothers lasts longer than it did with the other brother, doesn't some form of weird resentment or insecurity develop because now you have one character asking "Why not me?" and similar self-pitying, self-depracating questions. I get the appeal but I can't get behind the trope. It's my least favorite in the romance genre.

They're all the same. Vampire Diaries, Walter Boys, Summer I Turned Pretty, etc. It's the same format with the same characters every time. The female leads always end up becoming annoying, a cheater, and then act like they have no control over the situation. The "bad boy" becomes "good" through the power of "love" and has no emotion about hurting their brother by getting with the girl they were with. They're also just genuinely a bad person. The good brother ends up in a "villan" era and honestly if the villain era was them getting both the girl and the brother out of their life and healing from the situation to find their own happiness then it would be great but no. He hurts other people over a girl. Not to mention, the forgiveness that ends up happening way to early. The girls friends egging on the situation is ridiculous too. You know most friends would check this type of behavior. The whole things ridiculous and i hope one day writers get together and vote to just delete this trope from the archives.

I don’t like the trope because of the family dynamics. At a certain point, you’re breaking up a family and dragging two people along and for what? I couldn’t finish TSITP because Belly was being kinda selfish and the two lil boys were annoying me.

The implications of this troupe is that the main character will in the end always choose the “bad brother” since the plot will be about her becoming super empathetic towards his shitty behavior, even if she’s at the receiving end. She ends up “fixing” him and I’m kinda tried of this!!! Your gf shouldn’t be your therapist, the “bad brother” never seems to have his own character development that doesn’t happen because of influence of the main character.

I've seen a few shows on Netflix (The One, and Sweet Magnolias) where I think they did the family love triangle "right". Which is weird to say because family love triangles are kind weird, but the show puts the love triangle together and then explains why it doesn't work or shows the messiness and broken hearts involved or goes into having the characters learn the difference between the different types of love instead of assuming it's all romantic attraction. I think displaying something without advocating or condoning it is a nicer way of showing morally difficult plot lines and tropes.

As soon as I saw the title of this video, Vampire Diaries immediately came to mind. TVD made me aware of The Brothers Love Triangle Trope. I blame the Petrova Dopplegangers from Tatia to Elena for that. It is weird...I need a shower now.

I’m guilty of loooooving this trope and I eat it up every time ✋🏽😭 I can’t really explain why the sibling rivalry is so appealing to me but it just is 🤷🏻‍♀️ not that I would practice this in real life but consuming it through fiction and media is satisfying enough

The Cruel Prince has a sister love triangle, but the main character is one of the sisters and is being played by the boy at the centre of the love triangle. It's messy and the boy sucks but that's the point and it makes for some really interesting development of the sisters' relationship (which is sort of the whole point of the plot point!) and its unique and not annoying and the main character also didn't knowingly enter into the situation so that's something. I am probably not remembering some instances of sibling love triangles but as far as I can remember, this is probably the most interesting instance of it. And thankfully it's not too much of the plot. I think The Infernal Devices' love triangle sort of fits this but not quite since the boys are "like" brothers without actually being brothers. The poly potential is a lot of the appeal of that one. But overall I think that's my favourite love triangle ever, it's juicy and not annoying and both boys clearly have appeal and love each other enough to back down and not make trouble. I think the siblings not being aware the other has feelings for the person at the centre is a big factor of what makes me more ok with this trope. If someone knowingly pursues a relationships with someone they know their sibling is into I just can't get that and I lose respect for the character.

One thing I noticed is that the female lead always gets blamed for “tempting” the brothers but I don’t understand how the brothers never get hate for pursuing in the first place. It’s on them to have respect for each other and back off on being with the girl.

not the biggest fan of the trope either. i've watched the summer i turned pretty because of nostalgia and their good summer vibes. however, i believe any trope can be well done if the justification is good (the 'why' there is a love triangle in the first place). I'll take a book example but the clockwork trilogy of cassandra clare is the best love triangle i've seen. And I'll say it falls into the brothers trope as well because the two guys are bestfriends and have lived together for years. But the reason behind each actions with each of these boys made so much sense and it brough so much angst. It was actually so good. But that was possible because it was a fantasie, i don't know if a fiction could pull that off

I do like love triangles but when it comes for siblings is a huge no as always. But I feel like they never really give the sweet the one that actually does tell you how they feel… A win, its really annoying like why do the have to pick someone that’s broken some of us don’t want that. you can make a cute sweet guy and make the relationship have drama like write something

I love me a love triangle, mainly two boys fighting over one girl because as it should be, but I agree, adding siblings or relatives in the mix is just messy. While we don’t get a lot of sister versus sister fighting over a guy drama I don’t like it like in Bridgerton, those girls were too pretty to be fighting over Anthony. ( no shade to him tho)

There are so many examples of this with girls. Its normally younger vs older rather than safe vs hot. Most old hollywood films or disney sitcoms or even some teen romcoms have younger sisters really wanting to be with the same guy that their older sister is trying to get. Its not really a triangle as it is fairly obvious who the guy likes but this concept with girls is super common too if you look at it from the jelousy angle rather than the classic love triangle. I hate that the only example off the top of my head is the Diary of Anne Frank (I believe that part of the film was fictional) but I can remeber seeing it all over at one point. (In that example he ended up with the younger of the two)

I agree. I've watched this show where a 17-year-old was being pulled into a love triangle (or rectangle) between a band full of grown men. The oldest happened to be in his 30s and the others probably in their mid to early 20s. I guess people are keen on normalizing and rationalizing and even justifying relationships between grown adults and minors. Or minors caught up in a shitstorm where they're constantly being chased around by much older people who clearly didn't think it would be that much of a big deal to be with someone probably decades younger than them.

My thing with life with the walter boys is this girl JUST lost her ENTIRE FUCKING FAMILY and ur telling me instead of u know showing her mourning the loss of her only family and showing how shes coping and maybe learning more about her parents life before they had her ur telling me shes going be sat around swooning being like omg mr emotionally constipated or omg mr slightly creepy i just simply cant choose so i mus bounce between the 2

i definitely don't get it at all. in the vampire diaries at least it had a backstory of katherine manipulating them and playing with them like toys so their obsession with elena makes sense. however, what I have seen in other shows I don't fully get it like in Baby Daddy, in my opinion, Riley is just a bad person she obsessed over Ben until it didn't serve her anymore and only ended up with Danny to just act totally unfair to him about hooking up with other girls when she was obsessed with Ben his brother for most of the time they knew each other. I don't see this brothers love triangle being anything but toxic as hell and not what young people should validate.

I personally refuse to watch, shows that have this trope, and I don’t like it is it wouldn’t happen in real life in my opinion like I’ve never seen that happen. I can sort of believe it if we’re talking about like half siblings or step siblings but like two full siblings as the second oldest of seven kids from two marriages. Not have any of my younger brothers and I have three of them they’re close in age and there’s definitely had moments where they liked or thought a girl was really pretty never have they ever gotten into this kind of situation because normally it’s a conversation they either end up having and deciding either one of them or pursue it, or my oldest out of my younger brothers if he likes someone and then one of the younger ones that he steps the fuck back he’s like you know what little bro likes this person I’ll let them sit there and try it out. I also feel like it’s the same where we get it like one guy and he’s wearing over two girls that happened to be related because again I don’t think anytime in my life have me and any of my sisters, especially the ones closest to me and age sat there, met someone like them, and then all sat there and was like yeah we’re gonna see how this works Normally me and my older sister would stuck the hell out of our young younger sister like them or if we could clearly tell that one of us like them more the other ones would bow out we never sit there, and actually go. Yeah, sure let’s have this person basically play with all of our feelings Because what could go wrong? Love triangles are fun when like no one‘s related it’s their friends they’re really close personally just it feels weird when they’re siblings. Even my cousins can work because you’re not always close with all your cousin but your siblings. That’s the one you like live with your entire life if they end up with your sibling and one of those shows where you’re supposed to like sit there and find out that they like stay together and like get married or have kids it’s like your sibling made out with your spouse at some point. Your spouse almost ended up with your sibling. Sometimes it even goes as far as some sleeping together. Sorry I don’t think I wanna date someone who has slept with my sibling. Like ew. But I can also see the two teenagers. It’s kind of the same people as like quiet or nerdy girl having that glow up in the first place, and then like the entire male population that they used to hang out with, and talk with all of a sudden noticed them in a different light and be like omg your so pretty.

Love triangles in general annoy me. They tried soo hard to do this with Harry Potter as well. In the original books, Harry and Hermione were so much like siblings that it's actually kinda weird to picture something romantic between them. Hermione was so very clearly in love with Ron, and Harry was so very clearly in love with Ron's little sister.😂 In the movies, though, they kept adding in romantic moments btw Harrry and Hermione to provoke a love triangle btw the golden trio. It was so jarring and unnecessary.

I ALWAYS thought this trope was so weird!! Even when I read the Summer I Turned Pretty series in like late middle/early high school. I finished the last book and I still remember thinking: wtf was that?!?! According to reddit (which I know has its own problems), this happens in real life, and I have never been so glad that I only have a brother, so this shouldn't be an issue.
