I actually clean direct injected car vales by taking the intake manifold off and walnut blasting them with a sand blaster at 120 psi with a valve cleaning tool similar to the bmw one. I can assure you after doing many of these. That once they are dirty no liquid flowing over them will do anything to the carbon at all.

I like this approach. It’s the technique that aircraft mechanics used frequently back in the WW2 days. I’m very doubtful that a chemical system can clean this complete intake system while in the engine. If you took the engine apart and soaked those components then a chemical would probably work well.

I know about a very efficient method of mechanical cleaning for GDI vehicles. It involves fine ground walnut shells and compressed air. The nutshell grind is produced in California, so I guess it may even be an American product (although I know it only from shops here in Germany that use it). Edi: I googled the process, it's apparently called "walnut blasting".

Another idea is to deal with the problem at its source. It’s the crank ventilation and exhaust gas recirculation that is causing the carbon deposits. A catch can would be helpful, but it really isn’t good enough that manufacturers have not provided a solution other than to pull down the intake and media blast the deposits. I would also recommend changing the oil after running the additive because all that dissolved carbon has now gone into the combustion chamber.

Some use catch cans in the pcv line to catch the oil residue before it goes into the intake. The newest oils are now made with gdi in mind so will foam less and keep the oil vapours down. Besides cleaning the fuel system, the additive in the tank never hits the back of the valve.
@nonperishables5870

Alot of people don't believe that this kind of service is needed or it's a scam then they wonder why their car isn't running well and you explain that the excessive carbon buildup needs to be fixed to solve it and they still don't believe you. What is Australians feeling about service intervals? In SA people tend to stick to manufacturers guidelines and some vehicles, like Peugeot, has 30oookm oil change intervals and they do seem to last quite well. Most vehicles that gets services according to manufacturers spec last 3-500k km.

@@JJSmith1100 Most mechanics will tell your general car service is due every 10,000km. Personally though, I get my cars serviced every 5000km. Manufacturers also often tell people their transmission never needs servicing for it's lifetime, but that's utter rubbish.

The reason for the buildup is the egr and pcv gasses . Fitting a good catch can with baffling and air oil separation will help eliminate the carbon buildup . Fitting an egr cooler will also help but few egr systems are designed properly they are designed as cheap as possible usually as a bandaid with the lowest cost assembly this is especially bad for Diesel engines. If they were designed properly the exhaust gas would be taken from after the particulate filter and cooled before entering the intake manifold.

A before and after shot of the intake ports would've been nice, but I already know this product doesn't make enough of a difference for it to be visible. Walnut blasting is the only real way to get rid of all the carbon. On a brand new car doing this service every oil change could help prevent the deposits, but at 50k miles I bet the valves are already too gummed up for this cleaner to make a significant difference.

Surely oil changes depend on the use of the vehicle, rather than mileage? I used to drive 120 miles a day to and from work, so all condensation in the oil was boiled off. And from the exhaust system too. Short journeys in stop start traffic is what ruins oil, meaning earlier changes and rotted out mild steel exhaust systems.

I consider this video a sponsored public service announcement. Many people have no clue they have an engine that will require this type of cleaning. I don't know the benefits of one particular product over another, but intake cleaning is something that needs to be done to direct-injected engines. I'm sure The Wizard got this service for the promotion, but it was not heavy-handed; just informative.

Nice!! So it's a preventive service not a corrective service. PCV vapour reduction is also good for GDI engines with some manufacturers are actually incorporating baffling in the valve/cam covers to reduce crankcase vapours entering the induction system. External catch can a great choice as well. Nice product.

Any thoughts/comments on the fact that as far as I know, no manufacturer that makes a GDI engine recommends this kind of service and a few specifically released statements against them? Ford comes to mind as having released an official statement specifically mentioning BG's induction service WILL damage either the engine or the turbos on EcoBoost engines (I found it interesting that it didn't even go with "may" or "might" but "will" cause damage). BG used to have a video up of them using their induction service on a 3.5L EcoBoost and has since been taken down off their site, the rumor is that they were forced to take it down. Interestingly it seems like Ford dealers still try to sell this service so Ford released an official letter to their dealers telling them to knock off pushing unnecessary and potentially harmful services on their customers, I believe that this one specifically mentioned BG's induction and fuel injection cleaning.

Another common failure mode of carbon buildup on the valves is the valve not sealing perfectly any more, and sometimes even burning a hole inside the valve, so there is no compression left on this cylinder, and the engine needs new valves.

I was badgered by my Honda dealer to pay for a "fuel injector system service" on my Accord. I eventually caved, and afterwards asked what they found - "actually it was pretty clean". That was the first, and last time I paid for a fuel injector cleaning. I discussed why this was the case with the service assistant, and unsurprisingly we came to the conclusion that it was because, after over 200k miles, the only gas that had ever gone into the tank (with probably only around 5 exceptions) was either Exxon or BP gas. If you buy poor quality gas then you may find you pay somewhere down the road.
