I'm quite familiar with this particular case. Edwin was considered a genuine hypochondriac, and the mercury won't have helped his sanity as time went by. There was and still is a belief that he did take the poison himself. In part because he was afraid of a long painful death. In part so that Adelaide could move on with her life, rather than nursing him for years. This is a genuine possibility as it might explain the lack of scarring. Downing it in one as it were, mixed with the brandy to mask any slight taste, no matter how brief, that might make him gag. There have been many dramatic versions of the story, all with different opinions as to "who dunnit?" . One of my favourites, which has a ton of inaccuracies and invention, is part of an early 1950's radio series, The Black Museum. It is possible that my enjoyment of it is coloured by the fact that it was narrated by Orson Wells. "I remain, as always, obediently yours." If only! Personally I doubt that she could have given it to him without his knowledge but that it does not rule out her participation. This was a masterly summation Brief Case, with more background in Adelaide's private life than I've come across before. Thank you so much!

I know this case and it is one of the strangest I can recall. When she was acquitted, the lawyers said, There doesn't seem to be any point to the whole crime. There is no evidence that she was a mean person or that she had anything against her husband. It was Edwin who kept putting Adelaide and the Reverend together. Maybe he did kill himself...somehow.

She used an enema bottle of the day. Or she used a douche bottle of that time period. Both of which are a rubber bag and long rubber tube. But i think it was because she knew she couldnt get him to swallow the liquid after she rendered him unconscious. And she didnt know that the chloroform would leave scarring on his throat. It was by sheer luck that she did it that way. Personally by the lack of scarring in his throat ots MORE damning against her than not. I think if the prosecution would have presented his case that way he would have gotten her convicted. But by not searching the house for either one of the aperatise i spoke of earlier they left no choice for the jury but an acquittal. Sloppy prosecution and lack of evidence. Then by letting the reverend go in the hopes he would be a witness??? It just sounds to me like the prosicutor was an idiot or just lazy.

If he did have syphilis then that could explain them having a loving relationship but being largely platonic, and the baby being stillborn. Also perhaps why he wouldn’t have minded his wife finding comfort in another man, although honestly it kind of sounds like they had a threesome going on. Also perhaps towards the end of his life he was in a lot of pain and didn’t want the shame of stigmata of late stage syphilis showing up, so asked for euthanasia. Who else would you ask but your loving wife and best friend/pastor who can see your suffering and know about your condition?

The effects syphilis has on a persons cranium and brain matter is insane. It causes holes to form in the skull and cranium, while causing chaos in the brain itself. People with end stages of syphilis were known to suffer from schizophrenic type behavior and paranoia, they basically went mad with insanity. I could absolutely understand how & why a person would ask someone close to them to help end their suffering before that suffering becomes much more excruciatingly worse. Unfortunately in those times by the time a person discovered they had syphilis it was too late to be cured with penicillin and a person wasn’t allowed to request euthanasia as people are allowed to do these days. When I was a child, I remember when Dr Kavorkian had been discovered euthanizing his patients with terminal illnesses and how horrific that seemed to me, as a child and society at that time labeled him as a murderous monster. As I got older, I continued to think about him and what he did FOR his patients rather than what he did TO them. He had been crucified for simply helping to end the pain & suffering of people who were slowly dying in agonizing pain. It was also he who inspired the laws to be changed in regards to those who are terminally ill and were granted the right to be euthanized rather than be forced to die in agony.

What a interesting and yet fascinating story about, Adelaide Bartlett. The mystery of her husband's death wasn't enough to find her guilty of his murder but yet it seems as though she and the reverend may have plotted her husband's demise. Like Today, It Always Been Easy To Prove A Man Guilty Of Murder, Even With The Slightest Evidence, Than It Been In Trying To Prove A Woman. I think the jury got this right. Even the circumstantial evidence seemed pretty weak. She very well may have had something to do with her husbands death but it has to be proven in court and I don’t think the prosecutors did.

I always listen to your stuff while I am relaxing before I go to sleep. It never gives me nightmares! I know that the visual images are great, but I like your stories and soothing voice while I am trying to relax. I suffer from an anxiety disorder and and recovering from a badly broken leg, and this has been a wonderful tool for dealing with my boredom while stuck in bed, and it calms me down. I really enjoyed this story, by the way. I especially like the historical stuff.

I saw in Dickens how girls would be sent to schools and convents for their education by their future "husband/benefactor" to keep them pure and refined. The fact that he refused a doc for Adelaides birth makes me wonder if he knew he had Syphilis (a horrible stigmatized and deadly STD, which can cause stillbirth). If he wanted to resume bedroom activities w/her after getting better she likely thought over my dead body 🤢😡☠

The parallels between this case and that of Madeleine Smith are uncanny. As your excellent video on the Smith case pointed out, she was acquitted by the unique Scots Law verdict of Not Proven, which was due to lack of evidence. What is lesser known is that Smith's former lover, Emile L'Anglier, abused arsenic as a narcotic, and may well have accidentally overdosed himself; hence the verdict. So it is in this case the husband may have woken up, feeling unwell, and quickly taken a swig of the chloroform, it overpowering him before he could wake his wife. It's equally possible he deliberately took his own life. He was already convinced that he was dying, and had already taken steps to ensure that his wife should not suffer after his death. Whatever the truth, both Smith and Bartlett took the exact circumstances to the grave with them.
