There was a lot that was bad back then. There was the horror of what Arthur must have gone through in World War I and, in peacetime, there were problems of getting by financially, paying for health care, etc. Unless she had supportive parents, as Ethel did, life was impossible for a woman who had a baby without a man to support her. Who would care for the baby while she was at work? Even after the UK's welfare state was set up to give comprehensive care to all, "unmarried mothers" and their babies were excluded. The stigma was also a problem and pretending the baby son or daughter was a sibling was one subterfuge. It was certainly not a simpler time for these unfortunates. Add to that the shame and legal problems around divorce. We had a divorce in the family in the late 1940s and my grandmother spoke of the disgrace of it with distress years later. Divorce was such a serious matter that it was dealt with by the most senior civil court in Scotland and I wonder what it cost. No, not a simpler time!

I partly agree. I remember in the '80s when metal detectors began going up in schools. Also, there was a time when premarital sex was frowned upon, so being pregnant and unmarried was a very big deal (although the men who impregnated these women were not held in scorn). Women, and I assume a few men, waited until marriage, unlike now where it's common/normal to live together without marriage and also have many sex partners, beginning at a young age. Fifty years ago, there weren't almost daily mass shootings in the US, or so many individuals shooting and killing each other daily. Nudity on TV didn't exists. In some areas, people didn't lock their doors. Politicians were afraid of being caught lying. Crime, lawlessness, immorality are on the rise worldwide. So in a way we used to live in simpler time, but we also had slavery, and in recent history the world wars, gangland crimes during prohibition and many years of child sexual abuse by priests, even while society had strict moral standards.

Good morning, everyone. I've always thought that murder by poisoning is particularly cruel and callous. Shooting, stabbing, strangling, etc, is hard work but is over fairly quickly. Poison enables the killer to sit back and watch. Evil asf. Was glad to get the notification and was pleasantly surprised to hear a collab featuring The Crime Reel, one of my very favourite true crime channels. Thanks very much for the upload, BC! Stay safe out there.
@audreymuzingo933
@audreymuzingo933 3 жыл бұрын
But the question is whether the poisoner chooses the method for the reason you describe, or because they think it would be harder for 1. experts to know it was homicide and not natural causes, and 2. knowing if the homicide was suicide or murder, and 3. if murder, who poisoned them. Also, people tend to think murder (of any kind) will be quicker an easier than reality, because of how TV and movies make it look. And fictional portrayals certainly don't give the milligrams-per-pound of body weight formula needed for any given poison to cause a human body to fully die. Almost all poisoning accounts I've heard stories about (dozens if not hundreds) required repeated poisonings. I don't think that was because the killer enjoyed watching the slow process; if anything, it just gave the victim a better chance of survival and the killer being caught, with repeat trips to the hospital, more and more experts considering what's wrong with the patient, etc. In short, there might be SOME poisoners who choose it for the evil enjoyment, but most are just ignorant.
@riggs20
@riggs20 3 жыл бұрын
Shooting is not hard work at all! It’s just that poisoning is easier to camouflage. It makes you wonder how many murders may have gone undetected simply because no one suspected an unhappy spouse. 🤔
@audreymuzingo933
@audreymuzingo933 3 жыл бұрын
@@riggs20 There's no way to know the number of undetected homicidal poisonings, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was half (or more) of all poisonings. I just looked this up: Rates of deaths being autopsied has been in free-fall for decades. In 1970 as many as 60% of people who died without an obvious cause like traumatic injury were autopsied. Now it's under 10%!!! And why? Because there are only about 500 full-time forensic pathologists IN. THE. WHOLE. COUNTRY. They are apparently not very well paid, and a lot of people who think they want to do it burn out quickly, with so much exposure to very depressing realities, and finding themselves in the middle of very contentious court cases with news coverage, getting death threats and all.
@audreymuzingo933
@audreymuzingo933 3 жыл бұрын
Call this off-topic, but it's also a very cruel way to rid a place of rodents. And stupid, because when they start feeling sick they tend to crawl into some tight space to be undisturbed by the others, and die where they can't be reached without tearing up the structure, but they certainly can be SMELLED, and then you're attracting insects.
@riggs20

"Fair Play" could have been: 1) The coworker who heard Arthur say his wife was probably trying to kill him 2) The dead dog's owner who might have just guessed something was funky/ it wasn't a coincidence that his dog and the husband died 3) Elsie (the witness) probably put 2 and 2 together that Ethel literally killed 2 birds with one stone so to speak- 1st the husband dies under mysterious circumstances and so does the dog that Ethel disliked...Who she just so happened to give her husband's left overs to (a crime which in and of it's self is cruel too) 4) Any one of the many neighbors that she alienated might have just put it out there and poof turns out they were right 🤷🏼‍♀️ Pssst... Wait no "Pssst"?! That's a Crime (for Reel). 😉

If divorce was so unthinkable, I wonder why she didn't take herself and her children to live in another town. She could have gotten an order of support as well as held a job on her own.
@LucienSabre
@LucienSabre 3 жыл бұрын
Because back then separation (or whatever the step before divorce’s called), or anything remotely similar, not only didn’t legally exist but it wasn’t even dreamed of let alone considered - how could it have when divorce was already nearly impossible and frowned upon (to put it lightly)? Husbands and wives either stayed together or got divorced with the consequent huge scandal and ruin of reputation or, most extreme solution, the wife (or husband) ran away disappearing and abandoning the family.
@judithm375
@judithm375 3 жыл бұрын
@@LucienSabre I'm not sure you're entirely right, Lucien. I think if things became impossible, for example due to violence, some wives took the children and went to a relative. I remember in the 1950s there was a phrase "home to mother" referring to this. Of course, there might be nowhere for a battered wife to go with her children. Maybe she could leave them in an orphanage but I suppose the husband could take them from there. I don't know what the position would have been about a wife who had left with the children getting a court order from the magistrates for child maintenance. I should think the courts would have been very ready to insist a husband who had deserted his wife and children pay maintenance, but if the wife left ...?
@LucienSabre
@LucienSabre 3 жыл бұрын
@@judithm375 Wives at that time didn’t even dream of getting a court order….because that kind of laws didn’t exist until the late 1950s or 1960s if not later (before that all divorce laws were made to favor/advantage and prioritize the man’s side) - and even then women who did that got their reputation tarnished if not ruined. And women who ran to their relatives/parents/family had no laws or anything else protecting them when the husband came to take them back. Women have had no law granting them protection and some basic rights in case of divorce (and not only in that case) until after the first half of the 20th century.

@@LucienSabre correct. They had no property rights, nor rights to their own children. Also, let’s not forget the women who were institutionalized in lieu of divorce. To be clear, murder is wrong and should be punished. However, education on circumstances is beneficial.

Briefcase, this was a great story, Arthur Major's death really sadden me. From his photograph, he seemed like a hard working, good hearted man, who did not deserve this, at all. Justice was served, but a good man and father is gone. What happens to their children, in cases like this? I hope they're not in foster care. I will research and see what I can uncover.. Why can't people just leave, or learn to forgive, and forget, continue for the sake of your two children.. Why always murder? The Crime Reel, your name sounds a bit familiar, probably heard a couple of stories. I do apologize for not subscribing, for the name itself, is definitely up my alley.. But I can assure you sir, that after supper; about 6pm, I will be there tonight. Thank you sir for assisting our beloved Briefcase.💼
