For me, the more I listen to a YES song, the more rewarding I find the music. Putting all these 'taxing' semantics aside, for me, I'm very happy to have spent my time enjoying these songs -- and enjoy Justin's reactions. Each of us, obviously, can decide for ourselves. I hope Justin gets as much joy from Tales and Relayer and all the rest as I have 😊✌️

Hey Justin, I totally understood what you were saying the first time you said taxing etc….i’m also a bassist. I think as musicians we do listen to music differently than most people and that we want to ‘understand’ the piece of music. Some are easy to understand the first time through some it takes some time to sit with and let it marinate a little through multiple listens. So I had a hard time understanding what everyone was so up in arms about. It was very taxing. But, with repeated readings of the comments I now have a better understanding and have come to enjoy the complexities of this issue.. 🤪

I believe you will Love Relayer. Tales is otherworldly as only YES can provide, but Relayer is YES at their most experimentally eclectic best. Patrick Moraz adds a flavor perfectly suited to it.

when these albums came out they were a major purchase for a 14 year old so you took the time to get to like them .(I still have the sleeve inserts Booklet in my copy)

Justin, I think the first time you used "taxing" was in your "Close to the Edge" (the song) listen. I think you brought it up with regard to the constant changes from one section to another to another, which CTTE definitely does! But I don't knock you for it because most of us oldsters grew up with this kind of music. Hell, I remember when Paul McCartney's "Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey" came out in 1971. Here was a Top 40 pop song that was radically proggy by today's standards. This was much more acceptable and common back then (even Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder were putting out longer, multi-part, conceptual songs), so when hearing something like "And You And I" a lot of us just went "Cool, it changed to something completely different. And it still sounds awesome." The reason Yes lost a lot of people with 'Tales From Topographic Oceans' was because not only was each of the four sides a long, sprawling, mutli-limbed beast, but many felt they lacked CTTE's compositional and arranging magic that kept you wanting to know what came next. I'm still curious to know if you plan on taking on TFTO. I think you'd enjoy it as a challenging listening experience, although I'm guessing you'd find it a slog -- taxing, even. 😉

Yep. I hope he skips it. I just want him to at least get to Tormato. I think he would enjoy Fish Out Of Water much more than Tales...

Justin, I’m honored to have a comment featured, and I feel that you understood the spirit of my comment. I meant in no way to infer that I was offended by any critique you had made, and I am elated to hear anyone giving Yes a chance. Sorry in hindsight that I even mentioned the word “taxing”, because I also saw that it had been mentioned in a lot of other comments, sometimes harshly. I meant no harshness and enjoy your perspective on all the music you check out. Peace!

I wouldn't worry about people complaining about "taxing". I think most of us understand that they are equating "taxing" with "boring". The rest of us know you are equating "taxing" with "challenging". Because a song doesn't fit a popular flow can sometimes take a few listens to appreciate changes or melodies that are new you one person's ear. Doesn't make them good, or bad. Just takes a few listens to appreciate them.

JUSTIN You see many of us GREW UP with PROG from it's inception so my ACQUIRED TASTE happened simultaneously along with the genre. I was also a pre-teen raised hearing my older brother's Soul & my Dad's amazing Jazz collection. So WE evolved as we listened to them EVOLVING "sequentially" over a very short span of just a few years. Though there is an indescribable Coda or Thread that runs through the genre, diversity was also a very strong and deliberate trait. As one of the originators YES seemed to eventually capture it's quintessential essence all in one package with their 5 member virtuosity but PROG is vast and still my favorite genre even though I've loved music from across the entire planet all my life!

The first time most Yes fans got to hear the full, 10 minute version of "America" was on the 1975 compilation album, _Yesterdays._ Same way with "Dear Father" originally excluded from _Time And A Word._ But I know you already did a reaction to that particular piece. So, actually from where you're at right now, with the Yes catalog, from a chronological standpoint, you can still do a reaction, further down the line, if you wanted. Kitty agrees!🐈‍⬛

Since I first heard these yes songs I have no way to tell how many times I heard them in whole or part before they 'clicked'. I was at a club in the early 80s when a band kept playing the main riffs from Siberian Kahtru but never went into the song. They even had a singer who could have done Jon's parts.

My first time seeing your "Comments" video. Great idea! Don't hold back. We deserve it. I'm 64. My sister (RIP) was 9 years older than me so I've been listening to music since about what, 1962? But when I watch you "reactors" listen to a song for the first time that I have been listening to for 50 years I feel kind of...Embarrassed? Ashamed? Confused? You guys are hearing things in the first listen that I haven't noticed FOR 50 YEARS!! I mean...what the???...But we all listen to music for our own personal reasons. I guess I'm more of a casual listener because I just wanted to have fun with this stuff all these years without breaking down each song and noticing their faults along with their pleasures, which I guess is the deffinition of a reaction video. But keep them coming. You're one of the 5-6 that I watch on a fairly regular basis.

I made The Comments Section!! I'm famous!! 😂😂 All kidding aside, it's good to be reminded I've been listening to this music for almost 50 years and spent I don't know how many hours playing this album in my room, air-guitaring with my tennis racket, air-bassing with a broom, air drumming on my pillow, and air air-keyboarding on my desk. Too bad I won't be able to check back on you in 2074 and see what you think then!
