The Fine Bros used to be the biggest reaction channel on youtube before the year 2020 when Benny fine would be exposed for wearing blackface in a Shane Dawson video. Then a couple weeks later Benny Fine and Rafi fine would both be exposed for partaking in a weird puppet show that was filled bad stuff, The fine bros fell to a point where they had to sell their channel to Electric Monster Media in 2021 that has been The Complete Downfall Of The Fine Bros AKA React!

Damn. Even when I was younger I thought the whole copyrighting 'react' thing was dumb, but I just ended up watching less and less of their content untill I ended up damn near forgetting they even existed. Looking back at it now though, the way they handled it all was so goddamn scummy. Just look at that apology, it's a messed up mixture of trying to gaslight their mostly younger audience along with a healthy dose of "we're sorry you feel that way."

I don’t know what ended up happening, but I’m pretty sure the only thing they trademarked was the word ’react’ in a company’s name. There are many different types of trademarks and while it was a very shitty apology video (it didn’t feel like an apology, it just felt like they called people stupid for being angry) I do think lots of people got it mixed up. I remember people titling their videos like ”r e a c t i n g to blank” for a while after the whole debacle because they thought having the word ”react” in a video title would get them copyright striked.

It’s not inherently absurd to trademark a “common” word if it’s a unique identity in your sphere. See Apple or Alphabet (google’s parent company). But react was far too widespread a concept for them to try to claim it as their exclusively used trademark. Fine Bros React would have been fine.

I actually stopped watching the channel way back when they started doing the cring-inducing tactic of making reaction thumbnails when the faces are heavily distorted to “emphasize” the reaction. It was dumb, it looked dumb, and it just shows how much effort was put into the thumbnails. Seriously, all you have to do is go into photoshop, take a screenshot of someone’s reaction and use the bulge tool to grow the person’s eyes and mouth to uncanny proportions. It’s such a lazy tactic.
@Justus4Libertea

I wouldn't call it lazy, dumb, or cringe considering a majority of all successful channels do it and don't hide it. Even if you don't think someone did it, enlarge the photo and it's obvious. Back then there were no safeguards for kids and content creators were practically kids themselves who made videos they thought were funny Someone like Shane Dawson especially didn’t think too hard about who’d be watching his content either. Who and how his content might offend someone just wasn’t considered since the reach of youtube wasn’t nearly as big as it is today and I’m sure he thought as long as there’s no will to offend, there would be no harm done Now that he’s older and knows his past videos had an impact on a bigger audience of people he now condemns a lot of what he’s done and see’s how his content may have been offensive to some and how today he might have the mind to never have made certain videos

Yeah I immediately unsubscribed after the trademark/copyright scandal. To think they tried to copyright an entire format done by thousands of people. That would be like copyrighting Minecraft let’s plays or the entire genre of Action movies. And what’s worse is, they started copyright striking other channels before they even got the trademark! Then I saw their “apology” video which is just them yelling at their viewers, and I never watched another reaction video again. I was just completely done with them

This is all new to me. I unsubbed from Fine Bros after the whole ordeal of them trying to trademark "React," and never looked back afterwards. The fact that these reactors, well, reactions weren't genuine and all scripted in the Fine Bros favor just really dampers the whole idea of their series. And the blackface thing is news to me to. They really fell off hard to the point of no return

I used to be one of their paid subscribers. It was one of my first online communities. Was such a hard fall. Might want to mention their non-reaction to one of the Reactors requesting assistance with death threats and a stalker finding that Reactor's home address. The black Reactors that participated along with Kennedy in that video were only given 2 or 3 days to get their videos in, and were only offered compensation for their stories after Kennedy outed everything. It was weird to see their blanket apologize over a text post on Twitter, their smallest platform. And when they hired consultants to help them address the work place issues they hired the company, one of the VPs was hired from.

I stopped watching these guys nearly seven years ago now, and suffice to say I'm disappointed to find all this out. Not shocked, I already thought they were bad, garbage people, just disappointed. Come to think of it, the best thing to ever come from the Fine Bros work was all the people who were inspired to make their own videos and series. Many (read: all) of them were/are better than the bland content made by React. For instance, the Brony React series: fun, in the same style, and better than the Fine Bros shows.

The early Fine Bros sketches "released under the RavenStake" banner were absolutely hilarious. It's a huge shame they can be no longer found online, but that only shows that with enough money, one can have quite a lot of agency in terms of removing stuff from the net. I always thought nothing got lost on the internet, but apparently stuff like "New Father's Day" or "New Year's Resolutions" (my favorite sketches by them) are lost now. The thing that left the bad taste in my mouth was Benny's portion of the apology video. He looked more like a spoiled child that was forced to apologize than an adult being sincere about his intentions. I was so incensed that I blocked their channels on KZfaq and all their social media accounts on the platforms I use. I was truly done.
