Hi Ben, what i like to see is a home owner totaling up their expenses for 16yrs, and compare it with us boaters. i mean every thing. yard work, painting, weeding supplies, fuel for their furnaces, generators, lawn care products. and so on. The cost will be higher for maintaining a home than a boat..
@peterbyrne652
@peterbyrne652 3 жыл бұрын
Both are money pits. But only one of them will be treated as an asset. A boat is just a money pit period. Doesn't mean it's not worth it, but there is no real value in putting money into a boat compared to your home. Homes will appreciate, and boats will depreciate regardless of expenses.

7m30s Visible concern with the way your batteries are wired in. All of the cables going to the batteries NEED to be the same length in order to help protect the batteries. That means you should put in bus bars, run all 4 batteries to the +/- bus bars, and then, pull your current from there. The way your system appears to be set up currently, the first battery in line is going to be doing most of the work because it has the path of least resistance. That means it's going to burn out early. Considering what those batteries cost, I think it would be wise to change the wiring up a bit while you can do it easily.. Don't believe it or need a source? Consider watching a few videos on lithium ion installs.
@KenWoodsNL
@KenWoodsNL 3 жыл бұрын
There's also the reality of not being able to position the batteries in a perfect manner due to space constraints.
@edwardnigma2216
@edwardnigma2216 3 жыл бұрын
@@KenWoodsNL Yeah, that's why you run all your leads the same length to a bus bar somewhere and then go from there to/from your power source/draws. Keeps the resistance even across all the batteries.. Electricity takes the path of least resistance, sooooo.....

Well... then you collect rainwater instead of running RO. You say to your mast cables, "hang on". You dissmiss electronics, deep freezers, you rarerly rely on your battery capacity and you probably do bottom paint yourself. Beside changing mast cables too soon, I'm not seeing anything wrong or too expensive. Anchor chain and kingston valves were s#it to begin with, so maybe was the cables also. What they clearly overstate, is that 50k is the usual cost of 5 year overhaul. Its not. But they seriusly upgraded their fat cat, and having kids on this cat, I dont blame them.

I remember many episodes ago, Ashley showing bulkhead damages on your 41 foot Lagoon, with recent findings from Colin MacRae’s 45 foot Lagoon on Parlay Revival and his failing bulkheads and detached and falling bridge deck, have you experienced any of that in your 41? I couldn’t imagine the sinking feeling that must cause. And certain sky rocketing costs as well as depreciating values if that were found. Thanks to Colin’s persistence on having everything documented, Lagoon finally relented and basically conceded in covering the cost of inspections and repairs to the 45’s bulkhead design flaws. Obviously to stem the bleeding of plummeting depreciation values and future sales of the Lagoon. Have they contacted you in the same manor? Especially with the amount of Sea Miles you two have encountered. Cheers from Vancouver, hope to see you around back here in Canada and good luck in the up coming birth.

Isn’t Colin’s cat you speak of a hurricane salvaged boat? If that’s the case, I wouldn’t think this would have been the responsibility of Lagoon to fix. Yes, they should stand by their products, BUT they can’t control Mother Nature and the destruction it can cause and shouldn’t be held accountable/responsible for those damages or have it be held against them.

We kept our yacht in a Charter Fleet in Anacortes, Wa, close to your family’s home base for 13 weeks a year. By doing so that paid for our moorage and maintenance for the year, and usually left us a positive balance so we could use the boat the rest of the year without any cost to us. I couldn’t imagine going full time without chartering, that would’ve made it so we couldn’t afford our last boat which was a Prima-Yacht 5280. The best thing was raising our boys on boats and traveling up through the Canadian Gulf Islands to Desolation Sound every year. Here’s wishing you many fair seas and following winds Nahoa & Crew!!!

I love that you show reality. It is not all beautiful and perfect and easy. In the end, it's worth it. I own my own home which is 20 years old. I put in a new kitchen, floors and bathroom in the last year. It needed it and was just a necessary part of owning my home. Nahoa is your home, and I'd say gets a fair bit more weathering than the average suburban house! Also, Willa is the cutest. So more Willa please :)

Thanks for the cost info. One thing that I am learning is the cats cost a lot more to maintain than monos. I have had 2 older monos in the mid 40s range and you are so right, they all take maintenance but even though my mono’s were a lot older that your boat we never had to put that much into them. And like you this includes upgrades like watermaker radar etc. And I am seeing cats with bulkheads coming loose that costs a fortune to fix. The loads are incredible on a cat. Don’t get me wrong, if I had a huge budget, I would have a cat. But make sure that you can afford to purchase AND maintain a cat. I have purchased older monos for under a hundred K and they have taken me all over the world for MUCH less money. And in safety and comfort. But you do what you can afford and GO. And congratulations on such a wonderful family!

Great to see all of you looking so well and happy. This was a great video and reality check on the costs of boat ownership. Thanks for sharing your amazing adventures ⛵️⛵️⛵️💕

Well done. I am having to catch up. I have been super busy this month. Getting ready to watch the one from 4 days ago. Like editing catching up takes time.

Actually in Thailand, we also have a free import tax for boat but it’s mostly available in shipyard, not in local marina.

Hey guys, great content as usual. I was wondering if you were planning to release a video on your next travel destination and how you plan to avoid pirates there and tips or tricks or how you go about navigating the area. Also on how covid has effected you and your travels or will effect your travels, the ease or difficulty you've faced while the pandemic continues. :)

Didn’t think you all could generate enough income to continue your travels on your KZfaq income. Must be nice. Good luck to you and your growing family.

They are living their dreams... no need for specifics on KZfaq income... they are just making it happen. Nahoa rocks!

The sad part is that are plenty of people who sold their houses believing that totally without any sailing experience, having the imaginary expectations will sail the world. I wish that they would listen to you. The boat is a life and relationship big breaker. Lots's of Love. Capt. Jack (emeritus). I sold my last boat in Grenada after sailing the Caribbean for last 15 years. Now I have privilege to watch my fellow Canadians living their dreams in a constant struggle.
