Yes, influenced by the Beatles and The Beach Boys. The drummer, John Cowsill, has been touring with The Beach Boys since 2001
@tod3msn
@tod3msn 5 жыл бұрын
The Cowsills were popular family band from Rhode Island. Their Dad bankrolled the band and their Mom was put in the band. They were the model for the Partridge Family TV Show but were too old when it came to casting. This particular song was written by Artie Kornfeld who founded with 2 others Woodstock. Artie believed in the band and this song was written expressly for the Cowsills and although some family have passed on they still tour especially with summer package shows with other 60's and 70's bands. One of the Cowsills, I believe John Cowsill, is a drummer with the Beach Boys currently and is married to one of the women in the Bangles. Also, some musicians who worked with the Cowsills in the 60's and 70's had great careers working with artists like Linda Ronstadt.
@colleenh7809
@colleenh7809 4 жыл бұрын
The story the Cowsills tell is that the Partridge Family show was always meant to showcase Shirley Jones (who was a well established star by then, having starred in many Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals). Barbara Cowsill was not going to get to play the mom, which was a deal-breaker for the family. Really the studio mostly wanted Susan. They've never said anything that I know of about the boys being too old.
@calhensley820
@calhensley820 3 жыл бұрын
@ Colleen H. Yes they said it took so long to get the show ready for production the boys were to old. They also mentioned they didn't think they could act.

@StevesFunhouse
@StevesFunhouse 2 жыл бұрын
@@calhensley820 Don't know where you or Uncle Elmer got your information from but, Colleen's account was the correct one. Now, that's not saying that they weren't delayed a bit before doing the show when the Cowsills said they weren't going to do it without their mom. If so, then that MIGHT HAVE caused them to lose some time but c'mon, they still used kids around the same age to play the parts when the show aired. I mean, Bill Cowsill was 2 years older than David Cassidy, and Susan Dey is 6 years older than Susan Cowsill. So, that theory is pretty much shot (debunked), and in reality, it wouldn't have mattered anyway. The oldest of the Cowsill kids (Bill) was only 10 years older than the youngest (Susan). So no, it didn't have anything to do with the age of the kids. It was a TV show, and they would've just written to the cast that they had, like they do for all TV shows. No, it WAS that fact that Shirley Jones got the mom's part that killed the deal. Based on the abuse they laid on the kids ... the nightly, all-night long beatings, the raping of Susan, etc., I personally wish there was some way that they could've taken the deal and left the mom and the dad behind in their dust. The good news is, if you can call it that, is that the parents ... well, let's just say ... what goes around, comes around, if you know what I mean. Put another way, I don't think the parents are looking down on the surviving kids ... I think they are looking up at them.

@@StevesFunhouse My information came from several interviews, almost but not all including The Cowsills. Yes I know the Susan has given conflicting statements. I would love to know where you got the information that she was raped. I heard her say twice, that her dad tried to get into bed with her once, and she caught him off. He was falling down drunk. After that her mom asked where she wanted to go, and Susan said send me to Bill. The information I posted is correct.

It is a testament to the entire group of siblings that they managed to all turn out as well as they have. Not that they haven't had the highs and lows that go along with getting older. Mom and Dad were about as close to a dysfunctional corporation that used minimum wage workers (their kids) in the band as could be. All were gifted in the understanding of music and harmonies. A great jr. high memory group that I never did stop listening to. (admittedly, it could have been heard within a song or three before I was cranking out my DP Machine Head 8track but that's another story) 👌☮🎙🇺🇸

I'm late to the party here but MRM, I hope you've explored the original version of this song from 1967. There were several more family members (although these oldsters sound pretty darn good for being in their 60s-70s now). Maybe you hadda be there... those of us who were have nostalgia in every cell of our bodies that holds the memories of our teen years. It boggles my mind that the music of our era, from 50-60 years ago is still played today alongside new stuff. That's pure gold. :)

Funny you should mention the Beach Boys... John Cowsill plays with The Beach Boys now. Love the harmonies here!

Ty likes a story within a song. Great job on the harmonies. This was 1967 - original song. Great pick!

They still sound good together. The original is better with all the family including their Mum. The others have passed RIP

Oh My GOODNESS! LOL They were the real Partridge Family and this song was an instant hit, just fun and good for the time period. No, agree that this had a Beach Boy sound, it was the 'California' sound and the flowers in the hair, yep, 60's and 70's we wore rings of flowers in our hair, hence the 'flower girl' that they sang about.
