A short extract from a talk by Ivan Tyrrell, Director of the Human Givens College, in which he explores some common misconceptions and dangers of modern hypnotherapy. Please note, this video was recorded over 20 years ago.

During this video, Ivan explains why great efforts to learn about the importance of the REM state should be undertaken before attempting to use trance states in therapy.
Hypnosis is the word we use to describe any technique which artificially gains access to the REM state the most fundamental process in any human being. Like an internal theatre the REM state is that in which our instincts are programmed, our unfulfilled emotional expectations are acted out metaphorically (in dreams) and through which new knowledge enters us via mystical experiences.
When therapists use guided imagery and trance states in their work they should do so with the lightest touch possible, as accessing the REM state in this way without sufficient knowledge and awareness of its power can damage the patient.

Absolutely! And, Where is the evidence? this guy didn't cite one study. On the flip side, there are literally thousands of studies regarding the efficacy and positive benefits of therapeutic and medical hypnosis. Anything can cause harm, if that is your intention, or if you're not properly trained. For the average person, taking someone down into a relaxed state of deep inner focus and telling them good things about themselves is not dangerous. The worst that will happen is that they'll "manipulate" you (I say this with tongue in cheek humor) into having more confidence, higher self esteem, being more resourceful, and feeling better about yourself overall, as opposed to you "manipulating" yourself to do the opposite.

I am a clinical hypnotherapist myself and false memories can only happen if the hypnotherapist is not careful with the questions. Never ask leading questions, example. "Is the man hitting you your father?" That is a leading question and can create false memory. The hypnotherapist should only ask open questions instead such as. "Okay, you told me that a man is hitting you. Do you know this man?" These are the types of questions hypnotherapists should ask. But even still, age regression is not 100% reliable even if the hypnotherapist is doing the right questioning.

One can't deny the dangers of hypnotism without also denying its efficacy. Anything highly effective will have potential dangers. The fact that hypnotism works can hardly be doubted. Just consider the fact that it can be used in place of anesthesia in surgery. Is anesthesia potentially dangerous? Of course. Does that make it bad? Of course not. I presume that Ivan Tyrrell would agree with me.

I think he is confusing two issues here, that of the efficacy of hypnotherapy and unethical/not well trained practitioners. There have been unethical doctors who abuse their patients but that does not stop people from using other doctors who are ethical. Hypnotherapy is a tool and whether it is ethical/dangerous or not depends on the practitioner. Therefore it is important to find a reputable hypnotherapist who adheres to their professional body. Hypnotherapy is a powerful tool, which in the hands of a well trained, ethical practitioner can significantly help an individual.

This guy, who volunteered for stage hypnosis once got into an induced trance. Later on after the show, he still believed that he didn't come fully out of trance. Hypnosis might be dangerous somehow and maybe it depends on individuals.

I just looked at a survey of a month of 5-PATH hypnosis (a methodical way of doing hypnosis) clients from February 2018. About ten completed five sessions. The data shows signed surveys from all ten saying 1) they got what they wanted from the sessions. 2)They felt the sessions were overall successful and 3) they would recommend hypnosis service to others. So, when you say unpredictable, the research probably was done with hypnotists who use unpredictable protocols. Again, back to the uniformed practitioner.

In a sense I retract my statement below or at least qualify it. I’ve thought a lot about this and it appears to me that three different phenomena exists that we call hypnosis. While there seems to be some quality shared among them I would say they aren’t the same. When I watch volunteers for stage hypnosis I don’t see signs that there is any activation of REM state. I see no eye movement beneath closed eyelids, no change in the color of the face or muscle tone, no waxy appearance to the eye lids, no changes in breathing. I do see volunteers capable of fluid body movements which isn’t what I would expect from someone in REM state. Stage volunteers perform tasks almost as if they are pantomiming behaviors in ways that clients in hypnotherapy are hardly capable of. Take the jerky, slow, fasciculated movement of a hand levitation clients in hypnotherapy exhibit compared to stage volunteers dancing like John Travolta, for example. I do see what I take to be social compliance in stage hypnosis. It's not clear how much the conscious mind plays in stage hypnosis, but it doesn’t appear to be as suppressed as it is in hypnotherapy. When a client enters hypnosis/trance with a hypnotherapist I do see distinct signs of REM state: changes in breathing, relaxed facial muscle tone and even skin coloration, rapid eye movement, sometimes the brows are drawn together as if in concern. I take these differences to indicate hypnotherapy and stage hypnosis are very different phenomena. There is a shared quality of "trance," but I would suggest are different in kind. Conversational hypnosis might be a third, separate category as well. There doesn’t appear to be outward signs of trance. No REM state, although there is some slight indication of some changes in body movement. Consciousness is not disengaged as it appears to be in hypnotherapy. So if my earlier statement appears to be disrespectful I apologize. Calling it the dangers of hypnosis and hypnotherapy sensationalizes the issue to me, but the points are valid. Making distinctions between stage hypnosis and hypnotherapy, I suggest, helps make distinctions that are glossed over otherwise.

This video is fascinating. I always took it as read that hypnosis was harmless with regards to doing things agianst your will - although, when you think about it logically, very few people would deliberately bark like a dog in front of a room full of people. I have seen lots of examples of people humiliating themselves under hypnosis. Also, to those who are getting annoyed by this video; the people in it seem to be therapists - and at no point to they claim to be anti-hypnosis.
@Braindazzled

Barking like a dog: in an hypnosis show, the hypnotist screens the volunteers at the beginning of the show, and only keeps the most responsive ones. If you've ever seen a show, you'd see that throughout the course of the show, non-responsive people will pop out of trance or be quietly led off the stage. The Volunteers expect to be acting out on stage (wouldn't you if you volunteered?). There are a lot of therapists who are anti-hypnosis, but it's usually not on a scientific basis. Rather, they may feel hypnosis is undignified or mystical mumbo jumbo. But there are a lot of therapists who understand and use hypnosis, too. It's just another therapeutic tool.
@PatriciaWorby

I have to disagree with this blanket condemnation of hypnotherapy which I have found to be very precise and effective in most people. Whilst there may be some hypnotherapists who are not sufficiently trained and might potentially do harm you could also say that about any psychotherapist.- and their sessions invariably run for much longer than the standard 3 - 6 of hypnotherapy. It is true that hypnosis isn't the same as relaxation - although we tend to use this to access it but it certainly isn't sleep either - just because it shares characteristics with REM sleep doesn't make it sleep. People are awake and can leave at any time. It is very safe. I don't want people to be put off by hearing this opinion. Try it and see. It has nothing to do with stage hypnosis which is where people are made to do strange things.. and yes where is this 'evidence' he claims? The Human Givens College do some wonderful teaching. But this isn't it.

I know this is a short snippet of a longer speech, but I didn't take it as a warning against using hypnosis. But rather a clarification of myths about it. Yes it can be used unethically as well as ethically. I know that a lot of hypnotists say these things to their clients in order to let them feel more comfortable in the setting so they can relax without fear. But the myths are also not true. So it's smart to know what is real and what's not. If only to be more knowledgeable but also to not get abused by people who use hypnosis for nefarious reasons.

I think this is actually about sibling rivalry. Ivan’s Brother, Mark, is the founder of an enormously successful hypnosis business that sell hundreds of self-hypnosis recordings. None of them are particularly effective, but neither could they do anyone harm. Ivan seems to have an axe to grind about the alleged dangers of hypnosis. He certainly has no claim to objectivity. The biggest danger of hypnosis is wasting money on hypnotists who are poorly trained and don’t really understand what they are doing. You can be “certified” to practice hypnotherapy for a few hundred dollars, without having ever hypnotized anybody. Buyer Beware.

@interlene
@interlene 6 жыл бұрын
The purpose is to unlock trauma and discharge the emotions associated with it and then reframe the events so they do not affect the victim's life anymore. Also a person's self-esteem is re-framed and incentives are given to reach goals. Anything good can be achieved with hypnotherapy. @@hurricanealley8602 talking about a problem and getting answers, reframing the event etc. consciously helps very little in that when we are in the normal conscious state everything gets filtered by the conscious mind in a way that the original pain is not re-experienced because too painful. In a hypnotic state instead, things don't get filtered as much because the conscious mind is in a relaxed state and therefore lowers its guard. Thus the original pain will come back to surface and discharged from the nervous system once and for all. It's painful but not as painful as when originally experienced because the person knows they are now in a safe environment and they are not in actual danger. Trust me, it's the only way to put things in the past once and for all. Many hypnotherapist rely on just re-framing the event, but without having the mind closing the processing circle of the trauma there is only temporary relief. And for the process to be complete the emotions attached to the fight or flight response must be discharged.

I have been useing self hypnosis since i was in my teens, for various purpouses. since i lost my pairents, & had to struggle to cope alone, in circumstances of severe financial hardship, i have been useing it every evening, to keep my mind focused on positiv e thoughts & ideas, & suppress the necative ones. maybe if it wasent for my soothing & inspireing self hypnosis sessions, i would have committed suicide by now!. i also watch hypnosis videos & listen to hypnosis C.Ds. i have always known that if a hypnotist makes a sudgestion, that is against your beleifs or principals, you can just ignore it. & no, you are definately NOT asleep when you are Hypnotised, this is absolute balderdash!, if you were asleep, you would be completely unconcious, & unable to either hear or respond to anything that was being said!. I have never found anything frightening, or harmful about being Hypnotised. trance is a natural function of the human brain. we go into trance, often, such as when daydreamiing, or getting absorbed in an interesting book or movie. there's nothing dangerous, harmful, or sinister about it, so just ignore this paranoid scaremonger! oh, &, by the way, the screaming & yelling technique is brainwashing, not hypnosis. that dosent put you into trance, it puts you into shock, which is a completely different state of mind. the idea is to reduce a victim to a quivering, nurvous wreeck, who will agree to anything, just to make ther tormenters stop their psychological torture. it has nothing to do with hypnosis, which is a soothing, relaxing process

We all do self hypnosis all the time. Frankly, our brains are locked in our craniums and their understanding of reality is based on nerve endings from touch, smell, taste, sight, etc. But they create a reality different from everyone else's reality and that's why we all see things differently than everyone else. A cup of water can be half full, half empty, a musical instrument, salvation for someone dying of thirst. All just perspective of how your brain wants to see things. Using hypnosis to kill limiting beliefs of 'I could never do that' or 'I can't stop doing that' can be extremely effective. But Mary is right, hypnosis can be used against you too. Not even by hypnotists with nefarious intentions but by say an abusive lover who is gaslighting or even belittling you to feel self doubt. Or a cult that takes control of your mind and prevents you from free thinking. Politics, religions, MLMs etc. It can be used against you as well as for you. As far as this short clip, I don't think he's saying hypnosis should be banned. It can't be. It's everywhere in overt and covert ways. All he's doing is dispelling the myths about it. People hear these rules of how you can't be hypnotized without consent, can't be made to do things against your will, will remember everything, etc and that's just not true. Hell, if a form of hypnosis can radicalize a person to become a terrorist and strap a bomb onto themselves to kill others, you know damn well that hypnosis can be used for ill intent. That said, hypnosis can and is used to help people too. It can change your life in the most positive ways ever. Killing limiting beliefs and traumas and addictions and and and... Just smart to learn the 'dark side of the force' as well as the light so that you can be more in control of what happens in your life.

As for Celebrity TV humiliation, that comes with an incentive, on the part of the person humiliating themselves. That is just an example of someone showing off for a prize, cash, attention, whatever. How do you make a nonconsenting person consent. Fatigue them out, with death threats to family, friends, self, then ask them if they consent to hypnosis. So, you gave consent. Now, especially since you're tired, have been given instructions to accept the hypnotists instructions without going to sleep, you accept the instructions. Input abusers add'l instructions and you have a hypnotized abuse victim. How can you say like there's no alternate way of ( look at Bill Cosby, Charles Manson, dentists...) of a person consenting, and its all completely of their own self control. The news shows everyday of people experiencing stuff that circumvents the tangent of logic you present ( as if its only up to the client). ?

All this guy is looking to do is discredit a very powerful tool that when used correctly by an honest and well trained therapist can bring dead back to life! He obviously doesn't have a clue about hypnosis and his mouth should be strapped tight. So hypnosis is a natural state of the mind like the awake state and sleep and which therefore happens naturally many times through the day. Which is why someone can be influenced in to buying something against their initial will or do something completely against their moral code, ie. teenagers do criminal things being influenced by their peers. Is this what an ethical and well trained hypnotherapist does? NO. In the past when people didn't know the ins and outs of hypnosis various kind of therapists did some damage, then we learnt from it and moved on. Nowadays you can see a good hypnotherapist and you can literally get a second lease of life: resolve trauma, build self confidence, manage chronic pain, get rid of anxiety, resolve conflicting issues, resolve intimacy issue, you name it and hypnotherapy can resolve it! I just hope no-one can be victim of hypnosis again in the hands of a "therapist" because it can be nasty alright. However, just like you go back to your GP if the drugs given are causing adverse reaction, you should go back to your therapist to tell them something went wrong and that they should fix it (for FREE). If after one-two sessions it's not fixed go to another hypnotherapist, one that is part of a WELL REPUTABLE hypntherapists associations.

You've got the wrong impression from this video, he's not trying to discredit a very powerful tool that when used correctly with the right intentions and the right training you can do wonderful things to people. However, if you accept the faith of this tool being successful in the right hands you should at least be willing to acknowledge that if in the right trained but wrong intention's hands that this is a tool that could potentially cause a lot of harm whether physically or mentally. Honestly, if I have to give it a guess your opinion was derived from a personal bias that simply is incoherent with what you want to hear. That's dangerous.

You sound very simple. You really did not understand anything of what he said? He’s not saying hypnosis doesn’t work quite the opposite. It’s because hypnosis is efficacious that it can be dangerous in the wrong hands, if it didn’t work it wouldn’t be dangerous at all, it would be just another phony bs. He did not say hypnosis is a bad thing neither. He said hypnosis is extremely powerful and that people usually downplay its power by pretending that it is a harmless, just a 100% safe self-help tricky. The reason why these fallacies are dangerous is because hypnotists can use that to manipulate people is they are not well intentioned. Hypnosis itself is just a tool, the danger or virtue of its use lays in the hypnotist. Just like hammer is just a tool, you can use it to build a house for a needing family or to brutally murder someone. The rammer itself is not evil or good, the person using it is may be either.

Sure if you're with a trusted hypnotherapist who knows what they're doing, maybe it could be a totally good thing. But it is possible for it to be damaging, and it is possible for someone to use hypnosis to take advantage of another. This isn't a question of how trustworthy hypnotherapists are, it's just clarifying what hypnosis is capable of so that people aren't lulled into the comforting belief that trust isn't necessary because hypnosis can't possibly be harmful no matter what.

Er, what is the point of this? So people who don't know what they'r doing shouldn't be doing it? Okay, yes, agree. However, if you're going to stop people going into unregulated trances, you need to stop people reading books, looking at screens, watching films, thinking about memories... and you'd better stop them staring out of the window while you're at it!

It's easy to cast negatives on to something when it suits our agenda to do so. Some of what you say is pure fantasy and I guess that's why you provide no evidence for your claims on those points. Most often the problems you point out are not problems with hypnosis itself but of the people carrying out the hypnosis. The big question though is this... if hypnosis and or hypnotherapy is so problematic, why is it at the core of Human Givens? Why do HG practitioners use hypnosis?

People who go to counsellors and are regressed to childhood, are given suggestions by counsellors there family abused them, or other horrible things happened? Suggestions that implant these things can be leading questions such as what situation caused you to lack self esteem or saying things like why do you suppose you have this problem now or leading statements such as we normally find people with eating disorders felt unloved as a child! Then the person will think what was it, and remember a situation where they were upset as a child, and start to fabrication or with suggestions of the therapist a whole situation of memories, false memories and after that tears and traumas, issues even court cases of things that never even happened. Or situations that were a small thing, and the person has compounded the problem. Hypnosis is unreliable in recalling memories and any work of regression should be seen as a metaphor or symbolic! Therefore remembering abuse whilst under hypnosis does not mean the person was abused by there teacher or so, it might mean they had a fear about the person, but is not reliable, however it could lead a person to falsely believe abuse occurred that did not happen. The idea of repressed memories and cellular memories is junk science, there is no science of it other than mumbo jumbo quakery, people who do this these "therapists" are abusers they are harming their clients and breaking up families. Where situations have occured the person will have a hard time not to forget! They may well be haunted by the experiences, so as for forgetten memories stored in the body in some hidden secret engaine is nonsense. We should look at things in a logical way! I went to a hypnotist and was regressed had floods of tears, and was starting to create abusive situations, which never happened! I did a mindfulness course and my memories were breaking down I could remember more and more abusive and traumatic situations, which I never had even thought about before. I never remembered them thought of the, the more "therapy" I had the more types of abuse and bullying, traumas, I could remember, and in a way experience during nightmares and even to an extend flashbacks. I was experiencing some sort of PTSD, all cause of people who were not actually helping but doing harm, and taking my money!

Hi Matt, I don't know if you will see this comment but I wanted to ask you how are you these days. I think your comment speaks tones about what can go wrong about suggestions given in an improper way and it talks about your direct experience rather than research results that could have been improperly reported. I don't know if you want to share it but I will ask anyway. Did you try changing therapist at any point? Did you find something else that has helped you fix at least a bit the damage caused to you? I suppose not everything work for everyone but I wonder if someone who needs help might have read your comment and wondered the same (wondered what might have helped you). I was lucky enough to receive positive suggestions that weren't intrusive and I didn't continue the therapy to reach a point where I'd have to supposedly recover completely from some trauma. Or at least I couldn't pinpoint all of my traumas myself. I wanted to do some hypnotherapy partially because there is a period of my life that I don't remember, but I couldn't go back to that and nowadays I think it does not matter. I did not work on it with my hypnotherapist because their intent was to help me understand why I did not need my anxiety and why I could live without worrying about the past and concentrate on the here and now. Essentially all type of therapists I have seen (councilors, cognitive therapist, psychologists, and this qualified hypnotherapist) wanted me to concentrate on how to change my perspective, to live in the moment and let go of the negative feelings caused by events or people. I guess I have been lucky but to the people out there I would like to say that if they don't feel comfortable with something, to take the courage to stop and change therapy/ist. Just don't give up on yourself, read self-help books/articles, find audios with predefined scripts, try to see that positive change comes with effort and the courage to make those efforts starts with you. I hope Matt you have also learned this and as I asked that you tell us more. (sorry about the extremely long post)

The presenter might want to READ a few books on this topic from REPUTABLE sources and not the obviously biased and misinformed "sources" that he is evidently relying upon. Confabulation (false memories) can occur easily in the waking state, for example (see Stanford U's work in this area). This presentation is utter B.S. and I do not mean the university degree.

Years ago, after a surgery i had some sort of nerve damage, whereas my appetite and peristalsis and digestion were not linking up, everything was working really slowly and it was pretty uncomfortable. I ended up seeing a hypnotherapist for awhile and he had given me a few sessions at home to stimulate my digestion again...well, apparently i listen to it too much and it was far too powerful because it ended up over stimulating my entire nervous system. My stomach ALWAYS pulsates from my heart beating so fast trying to digest food...When i get really hungry i can get intense anxiety, which a lot of times makes me not want to eat. There have been days and days where i would literally eat two meals worth of food at one sitting because my brain was not telling me i was full until then...The messed up part was that i wouldnt even really feel that nourished after eating all that because since my system was so over stimulated, it was burning up most of the fuel i was taking in. My breathing is always abnormal as well. When i tell doctors what is going on they either dont believe me, dont know what to do, or tell me to see another doctor. I can't tolerate medicine either. The hypnotherapist i saw put me in an extremely dangerous state with no way of getting out except with time.
