It was his lawyer Robert Lowe and Robert's (not John's) wife who adopted the children. Robert's wife was Georgina and John's new wife was Harriett. The way it was narrated is easy to understand that (his wife) might have been referring to John's wife instead of Robert's. I had to listen to that again just to make sure, hehe.

A interesting case; I hadn't heard of Knatchbull before. Clearly he was a typical psychopathic personality. Fearless in battle no doubt, and a gambler, but totally devoid of any conscience. Apart from his naval service, he lived almost his whole life by crime: fraud, forgery, robbery. He was an expert at manipulating people as well, as we see from his role in those mutinies.

What a downward spiral this man's life took, from that of coming from a privileged aristocratic family with a promising future, to that of petty criminal and gambler and debtor, to that of being treated as a black sheep of the family, to that of being deported to a penal colony in Australia, to that of graduating into a rabble rouser, mutineer and snitch, and then only to become a murderer of a widow with two small children. He went from bad to worse, never stopping in-between. I heard of no quality in his character or of any action on his part that I would consider commendable or redeeming, nothing good that could be said about him. What a waste of a life.

John Knatchbull was piece of crap but his brother sounds like a decent lad. Between the lawyer and his wife, and John's brother's financial contribution, it sounds like the children were given a good chance at a good life.

Decent lad? His family refused to help his brother when in legal trouble in England, but willingly coughed up some money after his brother had murdered a woman. Sounds to me like he was trying to clean up the family reputation only after someone else lost their life. How noble of him...
@annettefournier96552 жыл бұрын
@@H1ST0RYWriter His family did not refused to help him out making him responsible for his own actions. There's no shame in that. And they made restitution for the waste of space and oxygen. He was bad from birth. It was his nature.
@H1ST0RYWriter2 жыл бұрын
@@annettefournier9655 did we watch the same video? See 3:45 or thereabouts... the family essentially washed their hands of him. By no means was the guy a saint, but he'd previously been sent off to boarding school for being "unruly." His family deserves no credit. Their inaction contributed to his poor character.
@marcwright47902 жыл бұрын
@@H1ST0RYWriter #1 it was normal at this point in history in England for boys of his class to be sent to boarding school. Whether he was actually “unruly” or that was just added to spice up the gossip at the time as so often happens is besides the point. He would have been sent off regardless. #2 his family not intervening on his behalf got him stiffer sentences as someone from the working classes would have gotten. So the family was actually working with the law when they let him be punished instead of paying lawyers to get him off to commit more and worse crimes. Letting people get away with victimizing their fellow citizens is what leads to the most horrific of long term criminal activities.

This is interesting. Prior to sometime in the 1840s and for some time thereafter - until relatively recently in parts of the US and in Commonwealth nations) the standard for not guilty by reason of insanity was whether the accused had yielded to an “irresistible impulse” in committing the offense. In the 1840s in a case involving one Mr McNaughten a rule was instituted wherein one can be found not guilty by reason of insanity only if 1) because of a serious mental disease or defect he 2) is unable to appreciate the wrongfulness of his act. Obviously this case was tried during a time when the former requirement was applicable and prior to the instituting of the “McNaughten Rule,” which is the law to this day.
