Late to the conversation, but I think you missed an important step in the story. Ellimist tries to fight Crayak head-on, but their constant struggle causes more and more collateral damage, and he gets burnt out, thinking that defeat is inevitable. So he gives up and runs away. He flees to a planet of aliens (that will one day be the Andalites), makes an alien body for himself, and lives with them. He marries and has a child, but the child dies and he despairs again. But his wife tells him she wants to have another child, even if it might die. This gives him a revelation on how to fight Crayak: not by directly battling him, but by nurturing life farther and faster than Crayak can stomp it out. And this works well enough that Crayak has to resort to trapping him in a black hole. I wouldn't normally necropost like this except that I just came from the Knives Out Go video, which is also about two opponents, one of which tries to aggressively conquer and disrupt, and the other who beats them by focusing on structure and pattern. And I thought that was worth drawing a comparison.

I always figured they were more like moth creatures than birds, which makes this especially funny to see Toomin portrayed the entire time as a low-poly goose LOL

The general consensus I get is that Visser is the best Animorphs side story, but I really like Ellimist better. It's been nearly two decades since I read that book, and I still remember its story. There's just a weird impact to a random guy (alien, but still relatable), struggling to survive, and somehow becomes the most powerful being in the universe. I think this is because the discussion of morality between good and evil is well executed for a children's book. And I guess because the Ellimist created the Pemalites that's why I like him so much.

You can draw a direct causal line between Toomin gaining ultimate cosmic power and the creation of dogs, which is pretty compelling evidence that he deserves his power.

It was my favorite in the Chronicles as well, at least as a kid. I'm planning a re-read soon and am interested to see if I still feel that way, since apparently common consensus is actually that it's the weakest of the 4?

So after watching the part in the original vid and now this excerpt again i was like 'Yeah, cute meme-y reduction, but lets find out how the story actually unfolds". Yeah. No. This is like, literally what happens. Pretty much beat for beat actually. Alright.... For some strange reason tho this actually sells me _more_ on the series. What an amazing ride of sheer balls to the wall, neo-epic madness. It feels like nobody involved in this had any reason to go as hard as they did for a serial YA novel with that sales infrastructure and it's own comfortable market share already in place before release, but boiiii did they ever.

Crayak getting the same cosmic powers was a misstep. The book just kind of shrugs and says "whelp, Crayak got the same powers somehow" Crayak should have started out with Illimist powers, because he was from another universe and the power scale was different there. Then Toomin falls into a blackhole and gets caught up power-wise, and eternal chess game ensues. Replace one line of narration for a completer and more logical backstory for Crayak.

0:34 I mean, you're not wrong, capitalism is pretty much like that, but does that not apply to any society? Does communism not require most participants of a society to expend vast amounts of time and labor to keep things running? Can survival even happen without that? Is this not an apt metaphor for... life itself?
