Thanks so much to everyone who talked to me about the SC, helped me out with video and config making, and supporting the channel in every way. It has been an incredible journey from getting my first Steam Controller at the end of 2015, seeing Valve push out new features, making tutorials, and ultimately walking away from it all. The Steam Controller still holds a special place in my digital heart and I'd like to return to it one day. So here's to hoping that someone makes a way to use the SC without Steam.

Agreed. I'd really like sc-controller to take off but it's still pretty rough around the edges. reWASD is set to release SC support in the near future (I'm thinking sometime this Summer) and that could turn out to be the best SC profiler around. When that happens I'll definitely make a one off video talking about it, for better or worse.

I still have my fingers crossed for the SC2 but I don't have any hopes of Valve making Steam Input a separate program that uses virtual devices rather than injected code and SendInput commands. On the plus side the reWASD devs are adding SC support as we speak!

@@criticalinput they are? Hopefully they'll figure out a similar mechanism to radial menus in the future then. Steam being the AAA platform on PC, I too doubt if they're ever going to move out of their ecosystem on SC2. Personally I'm comfortable with that--as Steam has been kind to me & my region ever since I joined the PC platform--but I do understand and appreciate the criticisms on their platform. After all, addressing those issues would make our purchase & patronage even more worthwhile. Again, thanks for everything on SC man. I actually starting using your Hybrid config for Destiny 2 when I started playing a week ago to really dig into gyro, a feature I never really used or needed in what I played. I hear ya and I’m with ya. I used the controller since release up to about last autumn. The last year or so of use I felt that every other steam client update broke at least one thing and barely fixed the last issue. I got the Xbox One Elite S2 at its release and have been using it since. If there’s ever a gen 2 I’m sure I’ll be there day one. I do look back at the years with the Steam Controller very fondly. Thank you for all the tips and knowledge that opened new ways for me in how I used the controller! Live long and prosper 🖖🏻

o7 I'll still be fighting the good fight when it comes to demonstrating the capabilities of the left touch pad, but I totally get it. The phrase "restrictions breed creativity" rings especially true to me and my personal grievances with Steam Input; action layers being a buggy mess. I came up with the edge tap technique, and the community decided to name it after me. I dont even use it, because of how frustrating layer issues can be. Ever since I've limited myself when it comes to using such features, my configs have become simple and robust and a joy to use... but it shouldnt be this way. Edge taps are a brilliant way to give the touch pads more capability, but when the system that makes them possible also comes with a bunch of quirks that compromise it... And imo, if I'm going with a simple config then it almost feels like a "why am I using steam input when the config is so dang simple?". I've long thought that while a sc v2 would be pretty dang cool, we dont technically need it. The current SC still has loads of untapped potential, but the software is limiting it. I also totally understand the broader annoyances with Steam Input not being system wide. Being software that emulates inputs to then inject into the games always felt a little hacky to me, but I've accepted it simply because I love the hardware so dang much. I've heard that writing drivers and getting them certified and all that is a pain in the ass, but with 3rd party programs being able to do system wide stuff its always seemed to me like not going the driver route has done more harm than good - compatibility issues like you mentioned whenever a game refuses the hook, or the more recent issue with Valorant straight up rejecting all input from emulated sources. How can Steam Input ever be a "be all end all" input solution when games can straight up say "lol no"? The best defense for Steam Input being tied to Steam is the whole "competition" angle when it comes to other store fronts, but even that is feeling rather weak these days. I'm hoping that if the patents we've found do turn into a steam controller v2, the steam input team takes a look at steamvr stuff; steamvr is built on openvr, and neither are tied to steam (you need steam to download steamvr, but dont need steam open to run any vr game that uses steamvr). If they made a sc v2, I really hope they also split steam input from steam in much the same way the vr stuff is. Write a proper driver, make Steam Input a separate utility you run that then works system wide while running, work the kinks/bugs/quirks out of the system. Chances of all that happening? .... eh. I'm optimistic we will see a sc v2, but I doubt the rest of the stuff. Anyway, this post has rambled on long enough. Once more, o7

I don't want to disappoint but I think it's important to be transparent about the state of the channel -- I'm not coming back to it. I work full time on a different channel making 30+ minute breakdown and analyses of music, primarily rock and metal. Outside of tech my other passion is music. I have formal education in music theory as well as classical composition. And I use that to explain what makes your favorite songs so great. But even aside from not having time, 4 years ago I moved on from Steam Input and the Steam Controller and haven't looked back. I now use reWASD exclusively, starting with the Dualshock 4 and then moving to the Flydigi Apex 2, which is honestly the most powerful controller out right now (though I do wish it had a touchpad somewhere). So if I did find time to come back I'd be making content for reWASD. Thanks for the words of support though and I hope these tutorials serve you well. I know Steam Input has changed recently but the videos should still be accurate in explaining what everything does.

I’m just enjoying the learning and experimenting experience for now. And yeah steam input has changed a lot but there’s no good resources on working with the steam controller with the new big picture, so your content is still really relevant for now. Maybe I’ll check your other music channel out if I can find it easily. Over the last few years I've thought about coming back as I loved working on these videos. But I want to be transparent and honest -- it's not going to happen. I stopped using both Steam Input and the Steam Controller not too long after ending the channel. I've voiced my frustrations with Steam in the past and there were too many hoops to jump through just to play my favorite games -- many of which I own outside of Steam (I'm a DRM-free fanboy 😅). I currently use reWASD with a Flydigi Apex 2 and haven't looked back. This combination is immensely powerful and I never feel held back by either the software nor hardware. I do miss the touchpads though... Furthermore I completely replaced the 40 hour weeks of working on this channel with.....40 hour weeks working on a different channel. 😄 Over there I breakdown and analyze music, explaining why people's favorite songs are as effective as they are. As my online handle, CriticalComposer, suggests -- I am a composer and have academic training in music theory that I bring to the analyses. So yeah, I'm never coming back to finishing up the Steam Input Essentials series. My attention has completely shifted away from it. I wouldn't mind making some one-off videos about controllers and profilers in general, maybe make some more unorthodox configs to show off, but even that would require time I don't typically have much of these days. Not to mention that I don't know how many people are interested in a niche device like the Apex 2 using non-free software. I'm glad you've found what I did create here informative and helpful and I'm sorry that I won't be returning to add more videos. I wish I could point you in the direction of others doing similar things but sadly all the ones I knew have moved on as well. Even RambleTan (formerly ExistentialEgg), who was the biggest VSC channel alongside mine back in the day, is also a Flydigi + reWASD fan now so I can't recommend them either. At the end of the day, the VSC has been discontinuted for 3(?) years now and sadly there are few people, if any, still making content for it. With any luck the popularity of the Steam Deck with the (subjectively atrocious Steam Input UI update) will drive a new generation of video makers to dive into the intricacies of the software.

I think the main reason why I perform better with the DS is that the polling rating is 2-4x higher than the SC's 125hz (the variance is due to overclocking and USB vs BT). Gyro aiming feels smoother to me. I didn't think polling rate made much a difference until the switch up. Then I tried Joycons with their 67hz polling rate and I had to return those controllers :)

I only use JSM for gyro. I like the idea of flick stick but I can't really get used to it. Also, just like on the SC, I kinda hate using two inputs for the same thing so I use the stick as a dpad with 4 actions (weapon swapping, reloading, grenades, etc) and stick to gyro only aiming.

I’m in a relatively similar boat. I tried using my steam controller for every game, even if it didn’t work well. As I’ve gotten experience, have dealt with the hassles and setup of non steam games, I’ve used it less. The main game that takes up my time is usually Destiny 2, and while I started playing it with a steam controller, I grew tired of the poor support back during battlenet as well as the lack of simultaneous gamepad+mouse support, even when it moved to steam. So I made the switch to an elite 2 controller for that game, as well as a few others. Destiny in particular feels very well designed around a standard controller and just feels good to play with sticks, even if there’s a loss in some accuracy. I still use my steam controller a lot when the game supports it well, like doom eternal or borderlands 3. But I’m more inclined to just use my elite 2 controller if I want things to work well put of the box and I don’t need anything in particular that the steam controller offers. At the end of the day all controllers are just tools in a toolbox, and there’s not really a one size fits all controller.
@criticalinput
@criticalinput 4 жыл бұрын
This is actually why I gravitated towards the DS4. It has the gyro and touchbar so I can heavily customize it for shortcut based PC-centric games but I can also bypass all of the customization and use it as a plain ol' Xbox controller. Though as you said, there isn't a perfect controller yet. I still use my arcade stick for fighters and 2D platformers even though the DS4 handles them well just because the game feels different (maybe better) with a joystick rather than a dpad or thumbstick.

Have you considered sharing your reWASD setups or just general intuitive configuration ideas you've come up with? I feel like some of the concepts learned from creating custom configs can apply, even if outside of SCAPI. For example, when watching a video from the JoyShockMapper creator (Jibb Smart), it inspired me to create a setup of my own, despite not using the same software or controller, the value was from the ideas brought from the configuration creation. I do agree with some of the annoyances though. Even as a primarily Steam user, it frustrates me that when using the overlay (which is necessary for radial menus and touch menus), there is seemingly no way for me to close notifications from Steam groups I'm a part of, forcing me to choose between having the overlay or removing it so I can play without notifications. Regardless you do you, and I hope the best.

I hadn't thought about this since most of my configs are rather generic on the DS4. It lacks the interesting hardware for out of the box thinking. Though I might do a quick video about my gyro setup in JoyShockMapper since it's the most complex part of my controllers. Speaking of JSM, Jibb Smart is a really cool dude and is quite active on the GyroGaming Discord server (which serves as a makeshift hub for JSM troubleshooting and feature requests and whatnot). If you're interested in that I can drop an invite link for ya.

If the SCv2 happens then I'll probably do a one-off video about. The same goes for reWASD's Steam Controller support since it should be coming out soon (sometime in Summer I'm guessing). And if I get the odd urge to make a video then I'll definitely do it -- this could include getting the SC working with GOG games such as Witcher. As for music, I actually have two channels already created for that. I do on-the-fly music analysis on one and I post my works to the other (which is full of rather old composition now due to my emphasis on technology over the last several years) so this channel won't have music related content on it. I will stay active on Twitter though. Well, at least as active as I typically am. Usually a couple of posts a week and some retweets about gyro aiming and whatnot. Just pertinent info to my interests -- general gaming and controllers.

I had plans to make a video about scc but I never felt it was ready for that. I've had an eye on it for years though and eagerly awaited a 1.0 release for those sweet gesture bindings. On the flipside, reWASD is currently working on SC support. I has all of the foundation ready built so as long as the gyro implementation improves beforehand then it might be the best SC profiler out there.
@yoshikhurazi1769

@@criticalinput It apparently does have gestures already now. I would love to actually test it but my steam controller has decided to play hide and seek without consulting me first so I'll have to try it when it inevitably turns up out of nowhere. reWASD looks pretty sweet. It's a shame it's not open source but since I'm stuck on Windows atm anyway, it probably might be worth trying out. I definitely share your frustrations regarding the missed potential of steam input. I kind of wished that we had something like that for the mouse and keyboard too tbh. You would need nkro hardware for this to really work for every key but my mouth salivates at the idea of every key acting as a potential modeshift for example. On linux you can kind of do it with a combination of xcape and custom xkb maps but this is very cumbersome and often glitchy. OSX has karbiner which is a little better but still not at the level of what I would want.

@criticalinput 2 күн бұрын
I'd disagree about my reasons being outdated. You're right that there is plenty of new information to make videos about but I started off the video explaining that I wasn't invested in where Steam Input was heading. And that's still quite accurate. I still don't like being tied down to Steam and playing non-Steam games with Steam Input is still a massive headache. I'm not sure what Windows 11 has to do with anything but I've never touched it. I'll be running Windows 10 until 2027 when the IoT LTSC version is no longer supported. As for the UI update, that's been mostly a step backwards to me since it appears to be designed for ease of basic remapping on a touch screen. Most actions takes 1-3 more button presses than they used to and it's difficult to get a clear overview of a config. Mennenth has done a great job explaining how the big missteps of the UI on his channel. In my own experience it adds a ton of frustrations for any power users. So I haven't used Steam Input in 4 years and I don't see that changing any time soon. I have my whole library in Playnite (only 20% of my library is Steam) and JoyShockMapper has served me perfectly well since I made this video. It's super light weight, quick to build a config, and easy to see everything in a config. The only thing I miss is on screen menus. Those Radials came in clutch often.

Proton is Open Source (it's basically a modified Wine) and anyone can use and fork it (like GloriousEggroll), but the truth is that nobody gives a fuck and that's why it's "bound" to Steam. Instead, developers choose to use proprietary bullshit to mistreat honest supporting buyers, like all those so called "Anti-Cheat" rootkits and making it impossible to play them on Linux (BattleEye, EasyAntiCheat, Vanguard and the newest Denuvo Anti-Cheat). Another one, Vulcan is Open Source as well (like everything AMD is putting out) and supports multiple platforms AND runs better than this proprietary DirectX that IS bound only to Windows (and is bugged as fuck). GOG could easily bring Galaxy to Linux and using a fork of Proton. ANYWAY, sad to see you go, it was always mindblowing to see those configs.
