FYI I realise they have been revealed as demons, my take on it though is from the standpoint they ended up that way from aeons of time in hell, either way though, hope you enjoyed the video :)

Mr H Reviews ... I think "the engineer" made the baby scream noises in Hellraiser to draw meandering walkers in the Labyrinth toward it because in Hellraiser 2 "a baby (Cenobite?)" had its mouth sewn shut! Maybe the scream of a baby is just one of some other noises in the Labyrinth of the Leviathan; which I believe you skipped over in this video, since it was startling and surprising to "first person perspective" run into a hanging strange terrifying thing there (seeing it at the movie theater on wide large screen ... sigh! ... yes I'm that old)! It still was a quite startling, yet interesting Leviathan demon (what they missed this action figure in 2003? lol)! NOTE: Hellraiser 4 "Bloodline" explained that demons "with new skin (Angelique!)" become more seducers rather than remembrance of their own interests of pain and pleasures that have them in there!

I wonder how I would look like if I stayed aons of time in hell... I'd become a different being ofcourse. Not a human though. But an immortal monster-like cenobite. I guess you become pain itself. All those creatures are expressions of all the pain their former selves endured throughout what seems like an eternity. And as you said that exactly changed them. Scary thought actually. I guess that's why Hellraiser said "how dare you use that word". He had been in pain for an eternity so he knows what pain is, far beyond human perception of pain ofcourse.

Mr H Reviews your videos are great, dude. Could you possibly cover some of Baker's other works? Nightbreed/Cabal is a fantastic and mostly unexplored world that you could take a look at. Besides the movie and the novella, there's also a follow up collection of short stories by various authors approved by Baker himself.

Mr H Reviews ... it also may be responsible for the crying baby sounds to draw uninvited Leviathan guests toward it because Hellraiser 2 showed a baby with "lips sewn shut (and continuing to sew it's lips shut)! It's hard to tell but quite an interesting Leviathan "creature (or Serpent-like)" demon terrorizing probably females. Most men, such as Frank, would just dismiss it as a "swattable spider or scorpion" should they engage it!

I didn't even realize he was even part of the labyrinth or hell. They said the box opens doorways. I thought this meant there was many possible places you could reach with the box. I thought he was a horrible creature from a different world or dimension or something. From one of the "less desirable" doorways. I thought he was so aggressive because he was hungry, since there were many configurations to the box, and the chances of someone landing on his was very low... Meaning he'd go ages without eating.

Keith Allver ... in most religions the "primary three" of hell are Dragon, Beast and Serpent aiding the "Lord of Darkness!" In Hellraiser 2's ending we know Clive Barker intended it to be "the puzzle box" guardian collecting and handing it out to souls "unsatisfied and hungry for something more in their sinful lives" as a Dragon (note this Dragon creature does nothing to Kirsty except appear frightening during the Hellraiser and Hellraiser 2 movies while the Cenobites wanted Kirsty's soul)!

In Hellraiser Inferno, which I maintain is underrated, the main antagonist is the mysterious "Engineer". Spoilers to those who haven't seen it; The "Engineer" turns out to be the protagonist himself, or at least a cenobite version. Could this mean that the "Engineer" is really the manifestation of what twists people into the cenobites that they become?
@lawrencejelsma3937
@lawrencejelsma3937 7 жыл бұрын
Nick Bock ... It does not match "Kirsty's" experience (according to Hellraiser Inferno's version, which it does state starts a new chapter on the series)! Kirsty solves the puzzle box once she finds out her stepmother helps revive Frank (both killing men), fights off Frank's evil return from hell and becoming disoriented mainly because she's only there for her father as her last surviving close relative whom she loves instead of abandoning that life to forget and move on with a life with her boyfriend! It is not equivalent to Inferno's abandoning and hurting those closest to them in their life! Kristy went investigating the Labyrinth because of hearing baby screams and getting startled and noticed by an inhabitant demon Cenobite of the Labyrinth operating by itself away from the Cenobite group ... but now attaching itself to this particular box's "gateway (note many other Hellraiser movies suggest multiple, Hellraiser 2, buildings and space structure, Hellraiser 4)!" Both movies do imply "the engineer" to be a more nasty Cenobite that lurks among the others (if there is some tie-in)! 🤔
@nickbock142
@nickbock142 7 жыл бұрын
Right, but the "more nasty Cenobite" could be their own self. It's a monster that all of the other Cenobites had to face as they struggled internally with their humanity (not wanting to cause harm) and their lust for sensations (usually pain). In many cases, I'm sure they thought that it's easier to give in than continue struggling. So, they torment themselves. In Kristy's case, it came early because she wanted the supernatural power to punish her step-mother and uncle and so the power to do so chased and taunted her into quickly giving up her humanity. In the case of her boyfriend, he's been devolving for a long time now. There wasn't a monstrous Engineer needed. He's already at the point where he can torment himself and others. It would vary based on each person. But it's just a thought. I haven't read the books or many of the comics (though I plan to in the near future (if I ever get through the Gormenghast trilogy)) so I may be missing very large puzzle pieces.
@lawrencejelsma3937
@lawrencejelsma3937 7 жыл бұрын
Nick Bock ... I am only basing from studying the movies (rather having to go through other books or comics)! "The Engineer" was the name given to that particular Cenobite (it has hands and click chatter of its teeth like Chatterer, Beast and Torso)! The "Hellraiser (first movie)" Cenobite is just as stated here in this video, at the least! In "Inferno" with the self pride indulgent decay that "engineer" shows itself as looking like a type of Chatterer (young boy soul who disappoints his parents too in Hellraiser 2's redemption scene) with an upper half as "Torso" but full sized (with waist and legs as seen in Hellraiser : Inferno)! It has a long black tongue as the "wire twins" too. We know this "engineer," the wire twins and Torso are Leviathan connected (like Pinhead, Female, Butterball and Chatterer in the Hellraiser first movie). Note: The Wire Twins being "Hell's appetites" satisfied of like a Polygamy relationship of having a demon marriage to a wife and another girlfriend too to share one's body and flesh to. Torso climbing the stairs probably showing itself (oneself) climbing to the next steps to completing oneself for self-destructed results of unsatisfied pride!
@nickbock142
@nickbock142 7 жыл бұрын
I'm going to be honest, I'm having trouble following your point. I can't tell if you're agreeing with me or trying to state reasons why my theory doesn't work. It seems like you're saying that the "Engineer" - who, if I remember correctly, was only ever named in Inferno (as far as the movies go) - is using the Cenobites to act like symbols for the character being tortured to struggle with. Like pawns in the character's own internal struggle. That's an interesting thought. More importantly, it fits my theory. The detective is torturing himself and his form of punishment has called for the Wire Twins and the Torso. They were drawn to him by the scent of his agony, if you will. Likewise, someone like Frank would have amassed a "following" of Cenobites like the ones from the first movie. Now, obviously this isn't really accurate because Cenobites tend to hang with a select crowd of other cenobites (called a gash of cenobites).
@lawrencejelsma3937
@lawrencejelsma3937 7 жыл бұрын
Nick Bock ... no! You, many of the comments below and the KZfaq discusser say they were human once before and over the "aeons of time" became more twisted and grotesque far removed of the humanity they once had. If your theory is "that engineer" from Hellraiser, the first movie, was like "the engineer" from Hellraiser 6, Inferno then your not alone. I don't somewhat agree because that engineer has eye sockets (not sewn closed either) while "Chatterer ones" have twisted skin removing any eye sockets. We have to go back to the designer of the "Hellraiser puzzle box" interview on KZfaq for Clive Barker. There is a "Lamont (spelling?) configuration" with the way the sides move out on the cube and the cube's diagram that shows a drawn "engineer." We have to see if that puzzle box diagram shows "that engineer" with eye sockets to be sure!

I like to think that the engineer was never human at all. Just a denizen of the labyrinth. Doesn't seem to make much sense for it to have been human when compared to the cenobites. Just like the dragon monster at the end of the first hellraiser

Schwartzbruder1 ... not sure because it had hands and fumbled for Kirsty's "puzzle box" towards the end of Hellraiser (first movie) and fought like a stubborn "bully baby (scream noises of crying baby Kirsty hears not matching Hellraiser 2's ending of a baby with lips sewn shut)!" It may be like "beast (Hellraiser 4's chattering dog demon)" though and not from human but from scorpion!? 🤔

I hate to break this to you, but that scorpion mutant from the first movie is not the Engineer, keyword being "the". Here's an excerpt from the Hellbound Heart that describes his only appearance: "It was Julia. There was blood on the hall floor, marking a trail from the spot where Frank had abandoned her, through into the dining room. "Kirsty..." she called again. It was a pitiable sound and despite the wing-choked air, she could not help but go in pursuit of it, stepping through into the dining room. The furniture was smoldering charcoal; the ash that she'd glimpsed was a foul-smelling carpet and there, in the middle of this domestic wasteland, sat a bride. By some extraordinary act of will, Julia had managed to put her wedding dress on and secure her veil upon her head. Now she sat in the dirt, the dress besmirched but she looked radiant nevertheless, more beautiful, indeed, for the fact of the ruin that surrounded her. "Help me," she said and only now did Kirsty realize that the voice she heard was not coming from beneath the lush veil but form the Bride's lap and now the copious folds of the dress were parting and there was Julia's head--set on a pillow of scarlet silk and framed with a fall of auburn hair. Bereft of lungs, how could it speak? It spoke nevertheless "Kirsty..." it said, it begged--and sighed and rolled back and forth in the bride's lap as if it hoped to unlodge its reason. Kirsty might have aided it--might have snatched the head up and dashed out its brains--but that the bride's veil had started to twitch and was rising now, as if plucked at by invisible fingers. Beneath it, a light flickered and grew brighter and brighter yet and with the light, a voice: "I am the Engineer," it sighed. No more than that. Then the fluted folds rose higher and the head beneath gained the brilliance of a minor sun. She did not wait for the blaze to blind her. Instead she backed out into the hallway--the birds almost solid now, the wolves insane--and flung herself at the front door even as the hallway ceiling began to give way. The night came to meet her--a clean darkness. She breathed it in greedy gulps as she departed the house at a run. It was her second departure. God help her, her sanity that there ever be a third. At the corner of Lodovico Street, she looked back. The house had not capitulated to the forces unleashed within. It stood now as quiet as a grave. No, quieter." Not only that, the Engineer reappears immediately after as a pedestrian: "As she turned away somebody collided with her. She yelped with surprise but the huddled pedestrian was already hurrying away into the anxious murk that preceded morning. As the figure hovered on the outskirts of solidity, it glanced back and its head flared in the gloom, a cone of white fire. It was the Engineer. She had no time to look away; it was gone again in one instant, leaving its glamour in her eye." In the first chapter, it's implied the Engineer is the leader of what would later be called Pinhead's gash. ""Kircher told me there would be five of you," Frank said. "The Engineer will arrive should the moment merit," came the reply, "Now again, we ask you: What do you want?""

This part of Hellraiser always bothered me between the book and the movie. In the book, the Engineer was a humanoid with a face that could flare to the brilliance of the sun. He made the devices of torture that the cenobites used on the people that solved the configuration. I don't view the wall-crawler in the movie as the Engineer. To me it is just one of Hell's monsters, possibly a guardian guarding a entrance into Hell. In the book I always thought (though it was never confirmed) that the Engineer could possibly be a fallen angel. Also, I don't view the wall-crawler as something that Hell gradually changed over time. Looking at that thing I can only come to the conclusion that it was tortured and made purposely into the thing that it is.

But honestly I think this creature is fucking amazing, but I don't think it was ever a human...... Just a twisted demon of hell that almost ripped a you girl apart. I like it's Origin story to be unknown, that makes it more creepy and exciting.

3:40 What were my initial thoughts when I saw the Engineer in a Hellraiser movie the first time? Since I was about 7 years old at that time it was along the lines of, "Holy shit that thing's scary! I know what I'll be having nightmares about for the next month."

What are my thoughts? First of all what a series, I was never really that interested in the Hellraiser mythos until I've stumbled upon your great channel. I've seen only hell raiser one and two and skip the others as I read great number of reviews that were less than flattering to those sequels. Be that as it may though I would definitely don't want to meet the engineer in a side allay. and that is saying a lot because I'm an engineer myself. Anyhow great channel and great vid, I've been seriously lucky last two weeks, I've discovered so many interested channels, wishing you all the best good sir.

Absolutely. I enjoy the more suspenseful/cerebral brand of horror movie like Hellraiser or Alien. I think the genre gets a bad name from the vapid gore movies that are rampant today.

My question: Why did the Doctor kill the cenobites? Why would one cenobite want to kill another?
@MrHReviews

he killed them because the leviathan was working through him, when they were forced to remember their previous identity by Kirsty, leviathan wanted them killed as they were no longer entirely cenobites at that point
