I grew up on the footy show through the 2000’s and loved it, I believed the show died when that shit happened with bill and Gary. I’ve watched the front bar now pretty much from the get go, it hasn’t really changed at all but it stays fresh and I love seeing all the old retired playing coming on and telling their stories

Sam Newman was the reason people watched. Garry Lyon stuffed it and Hutchy made it worse.

One show that I liked back in the day was Before the Game, think it was a little ahead of it's time with the smaller panel/audience in the same way that the Front Bar was.

The big thing that really killed The Footy Show was the advancement of the internet and how people got their news and entertainment. For a long time, besides newspapers, The Footy Show also broke a lot of stories and made a lot of commentary that you wouldn't get anywhere else. Around 2005 was when I recall that seriously starting to change in Australian media. I think you also should have mentioned that The Footy Show for the longest time absolutely decimated most of it's competition on rival networks. Yes, The Front Bar did eventually dethrone it, but that was only after 23 years of countless competitors on channel 7, the majority of which time they had the rights to show the highlights.

A quick note on the 2019 incarnation: originally, Nine’s Melbourne management weren’t going to call it The Footy Show… they were going to use a different name (rumoured to be “More Than A Game”, as a nod to TFS’s theme song). But Nine’s Sydney management overruled them, refusing to green light the show unless it had the TFS name.

Sam was my idol as a kid. Everyone else on TV just seemed like robots, but he always had the ability to see through the bullshit and call it as he saw it. Thanks for the nostalgia trip.

Kind of the same thing with the NRL Footy Show. Times have changed and people are easily offended in this day and age. Maybe good content and fresh ideas had dried up by the end of its run

Everything went down hill when Trevor Marmalade was dismissed. Then they hired Crawford, Billy Brainless, Gary Lyon and that was the beginning of the end. They were dumb and stupid.

Well summed up. It died a natural death. Sam was the reason I watched, but then they tried to muzzle him and work to a script. That’s not how Sam thrives. Then they tried to compete with The Front Bar by bringing in Lehmo. After the first episode in this format, I gave it eight weeks. I think it lasted six.

Footy Show's decline started when Trevor Marmalade was axed. His observational humour was the unsung star of the show. The humour post Trevor....pffft.

Was too young to watch it with Eddie and Trev. But I always remember 2008-13 the so called glory years had some moments but it was on at 9.30pm and the hour and a half length was too long and tended to drag on without much actually happening.

I stopped watching TV around 2009, before then I use to watch The Footy Show because Sam Newman was the only entertaining reason to. I remember being shocked in 2018 it was even still going with how strong cancel culture is.

The show got tired. It may have been novel at the beginning and funny to watch but comedy moved on but the show didn’t move with the times. A bit like Hey Hey it’s Saturday.

The Footy Show was amazing! I blame Garry Lyon. Front Bar will never reach the same heights.

It was definitely my favourite show on channel 9 at the time I definitely think they could create a new show that can compete with the front bar if they get the right host and panelists don’t get me wrong I don’t mind the front bar but sometimes it try’s too hard to be funny it sometimes it doesn’t feel like a show about footy because the lack of previewing each game for the weekend and Mick Molloy makes me cringe because I don’t find him funny and interrupts the guests too much. Like the reasons the footy show didn’t survive were Sam got too old and way too political the billy brownless and gary lyon saga Eddie McGuire and James brayshaw leaving without good replacements and people are too offended by things these days

It’s a hard sell to marry comedy and footy and you’re simply better off separating the two

Several issues... fundamentally losing McGuire hurt the show and they didn't really return. It became a show with Lyon Brayshaw Brownless and Crawford doing the same stuff, Some of the comedy was more stupid stuff that turned people off. The other thing was that they didn't keep bringing in footballers with good personalities. And young champs they had on were more boring and they relied on the same old former players to do the same old comedy. That hurt the show more than anything so that it became tired. When it started you had young guys who were playing like Dunstall Brereton Hawkins... Players like Buckley Hird and Judd while great footballers were not entertaining enough. In the end you'd only have one current player per show.

Nice video. Good assessment, they couldn't save the show. The viewers didn't want old fat guys in suits. They changed the hosts for the better and it probably would have eventually worked. Neroli (not Ne roll y) hosted shows on fox and was great. I thought the Front Bar was originally only on the afl website, then channel 7 picked it up and gave it a full 30 min slot.

I feel like theres room in the market for a good footy show, i mean front bar is entertaining but not a lot of footy analysis, and the others are a bit light on entertainment factor, or overly critical of subjects to the point of beat up storys. I just want some good footy analyisis with some jokes thrown in. A bit of a laugh is always good 👍

The Footy Show was a spinoff after the big reaction of the Grand Final special in 1993, thus nothing big is lost.

It declined the same reason lots of shows did: it was, and always was, mediocre. But we had no alternative. Now KZfaq exists and we have so many options available to us we can easily find something better. This channel analyses stuff as well as pro shows on a shoestring budget.

The AFL footy show was and will always be a cheap knock off of the NRL footy show
