Thanks for joining me.
I’m a hat salesman from NYC, working at JJ hat Center since 1994, and nine years before that at another shop..I’m trying to get everything I know about hats out there to you guys, so that it’ll help out some people and hopefully make their hat purchases go a little smoother. I’m happy to answer hat related questions or guitar related questions, this is HATS AND GUITARS!
Thanks for joining me on this journey, being a youtuber or the “hat guy” is a real pleasure when the viewers are so kind and amazing, (like you)
I’ve got a lot to say,I tend to go on tangents,and talk about many subjects at once..
I might stumble on a word here and there,
but I rarely edit anything out, so if u see me take a gulp of water, or walk off camera,
I’ve chosen to leave that stuff in, to keep it real, unfiltered and interesting..
So on that note..
I appreciate your patience and viewership,
and enjoy the video!..
Sincerely,
Kevin

Hi Kevin, it's funny, years ago you taught me everything about fedora hats, you were in a "boutique" talking, today i just wanted to see you again and didn't find you, forgot the name everything, then said to myself, well a vidéo on everything about "panama's", let's watch, and boom it's you ! So this is a clear sign of the universe saying you gotta thank the man ! So Kevin, thank you for having been my hat "yoda". After all this years, there is never a day when i don't go out without a hat, Hats are sort of like boots, when you tasted it, you cannot go back. Hey Kevin! Great to see you again. Great video! I appreciate your videos and your heart and knowledge for hats. I have a question. My hat is very soft and I've had it for a few years now. I think from years of pushing down on the top of my hat the sides are caving inward? Is there a way of getting the original shape back? Thanks.
@quadrogong1111
@quadrogong1111 3 жыл бұрын
Try stuffing it really tightly with paper, cellophane,tissue,foam,t shirts, anything..stuff the crown really tightly, get as much as u can get in there, so that the crown is really, really stuffed tightly,the sides should look better then. if the hat is felt. U need to dust the entire hat with packing tape, remove every bit of dust,be very thorough. If it’s straw, skip that step. Take the stuffed hat,steam the sides if u can get some steam, a steam iron is good..or fill a frying pan with water and use that, just keep the hat very far from the flame. Steam the sides for maybe a minute or two each side.. keeping it stuffed. let the hat dry w the stuffing inside, don’t take it out till it’s really dry, u can keep it near a fan or the air conditioning to speed it up. Give it at least 20-30 min in the fan, (maybe an hour or two without a fan) Take the stuffing out, the top should push back down into shape, the sides too.. u might need to pinch the pinches again a few times,to get the pinches right, but usually they POp right back into place automatically.. try this..

New subscriber, very informative video! I was thinking about getting a panama hat for a while now since the weather where I'm living now (Oman) is extremely hot and I love the classy look of the hat, though NONE are sold here really. Any advice on online shopping for a Panama hat? Any websites you'd recommend that has international shipping? I am going on a vacation to Turkey soon and maybe I could find something. Thanks for the informative video again!

JJ hat center ships anywhere in the world, you call them today and they mail it today. Use this link, hats like the” Bogart Panama” and The “Classic Panama” are our best sellers, a lot of quality for a decent price. talk to benji in mail order, he will tell you what’s in involved. There might be a $50 flat fee for global shipping. but it will arrive safely, double boxed in a corrugated cardboard hat box and then a shipping carton. www.jjhatcenter.com Email - info@jjhatcenter.com

Dig the low tech vibe and the intro and the nonchalance haha great channel....prob my fave. So I go to the beach all the time in summer was wondering what the advice is when I stick my hat onto my wet head that's been in the sea.....the sun is beating down all the time so it's hat time all the time.....obviously salt water is even worse than rain or anything like that.....was hoping for some tips for us that have long hot summers and we live by the sea
@quadrogong1111
@quadrogong1111 3 жыл бұрын
My advice would be wear a cloth hat or baseball cap, I wear a soft cotton bucket. Straw will expand when wet and then shrink when sun dried plus it can lose its shape badly. If u must wear it, just try to dry it out if the sun, upside down.

Hey Kevin nice video 👍 quick question. I store my hat in the box with the pit and the piece to keep the flange. I snap the brim up and store it upside down just like you displayed. Now if I usually wear the Panama hat with the brim snapped down in the front do I store it with the brim snapped down flat in the front and upside down in the pit. Or do I still have to snap it up every time like it originally came? Please let me know thanks!

Yeah, that’s a shame. Usually it’s more the fact that they dry incorrectly, if it ever happens, flip the brim up, set the hat upside down,and away from any heat, the hot environment dries it too quickly and it shrinks sometimes u can get lucky, but it’s a huge gamble

Good content as always Kevin, but how about Straw Boaters? Interestingly, it seems like it’s gaining more & more popularity among young menswear enthusiasts here where I live. I’m a Panama hat guy, thinking of getting a straw boater for myself to switch it up once & awhile but there’s not much information on the internet about them. Could u please talk about them on your next video? Thank you! 🙏🏽
@quadrogong1111
@quadrogong1111 3 жыл бұрын
Sure, there’s one classic one from Italy,made by Tesi, they make it for many other companies too.. they have zero flexibility, they’re a bit heavy ,and the edges of the straw are so hard and brittle, with no flex,that they require what’s called a “floating sweatband” the sweatband is suspended by a network or netting, between the band no the straw. So you wear the band, but u never really touch the hat,because it’s so hard and stiff, it’s the only way to go. Borsalino tuses the same boater,many other brands too, they usually have a lining that says either made in Venice or Florence . You can find softer boaters, but they’re not the same. It needs to be super stiff to stay flat. We also sell a handwoven Panama boater, it is lighter weight and less starchy and conservative, but they run a little small. I prefer the c,six Italian boater myself over the on, one.

Hello there. What's your opinion on Brent Black Panama hats?
@quadrogong1111
@quadrogong1111 10 ай бұрын
He’s a master,he does everything the right way,the traditional way..but I would never pay a lot of a MONTICRISTI fino myself, I find those tight weaves to be very,very hot.they hold in air,and are just too dense for me. I don’t love monticristi finos myself a lot.. that’s just my taste. I like the softer panamas from Tesi, the Cuenca weave,they’re a quarter of the weight, and way softer, a lot more breathable and they have the Italian styling, Tesi makes the same hats for Borsalino, they’re available w both brand names. www.delmonicohatter.com/category/Tesi-Hats.htm $300 is enough for a straw hat, that luxury prices! Paying $3k for a straw hat you’re gonna sweat up in a couple of seasons? Those Tesis are my favorite, a montiChristi fino is way too hot and you’ll sweat through a $5000 hat just as fast as a $100 hat. What happens when you take your $5k hat out and the first day it’s got a sweat ring around the brim? I’d want to jump off a cliff.. they’re mega expensive, and people just set their own prices as high as they can that people will actually buy them. The higher the price, the better they look to folks and sell. Those fino and superfine bodies come directly from the weavers from Ecuador. A lady or some guy will come to the USA and visit the big hat shops and sell those insane bodies to be made into hats, they’re very cheap when they buy them from these people, $25, $40 $55 for the best ones.. and shops turn them into finished hats, if they have the skills,and flip them for $2000, $3000, $5000 that’s something the hat shops love, when one of those guys comes in..you can set your own price for those hats. The problem is..only a few people have the skills to block them correctly,like Optimo in Chicago, and Brent Black.. these are not regular straw bodies, they need to be done correctly try, dried the traditional way, and flawlessly.. If you’re in a hot state and wear straws all year round, I can see wanting a high end hat, but these are works of art, they’re basically things you wear out to dinner to impress your buddies, i don’t care for them, functionally, those hats.. they’re nice as a museum thing.. but they’re just hot, to me.. why make something out of a breathable porous material,and then make the weave so tight that air can’t escape? It makes no sense to me..people see them in the case and are wowed by them,and they actually sell. I like hats with style, a tight weave impresses me just enough to admire it as a beautiful crafted object , but not so much that I love them, or want one.. I like very light, airy,breathable hats.. and those are just not that. But Brent Black is reputable and knows his stuff. He just has the best reputation so he marks stuff up sky high, which is understandable, but myself? I might go to Optimo in Chicago if I wanted the best custom hat.. they bloxked JJ’s MONTICRISTI bodies for decades until we got our own workshop. They’re the masters in my opinion, i believe they dry them in the sun, the way it’s dome on ecuador.

@quadrogong1111
@quadrogong1111 3 жыл бұрын
That’s Borsalino, probably the most well known hat brand on the planet... known for being the very finest, that is a MONTICRISTI FINO, there are very few weavers alive that can make a hat that fine, most of the, are old and have died off.It is totally woven by hand,and the weave is so fine and evenly woven that it looks like a piece of silk. They are woven by two weavers in the town of monticristi Ecuador, and signed in ball point pen, Very,very fine weave, just the straw itself.. that started in Ecuador, then it went to Italy (to Borsalino) to be styled and turned into a hat, by the most elegant hat company ever. You pay for the fine weave and the rarity of the straw itself, but also for the styling by Borsalino. I can’t get into it any further,but just google MONTICRISTI FINO HAT and you can read about it. It started its journey in South America, then Alessandria Italy,and the n the USA.. the Monticristti fino hats are legadary enough,and so is Borsalino, but when you combine them both, it becomes something twice as cool.

I’ve owned one or two, probably the lightest weight hat on earth, I doubt there’s anything lighter around, it’s very high tech, feather light,and has a reflective quality that reflects the sun, no weight and reflective equals a very efficient sun hat, plus the styling is as elegant and Italian as u can get, the drawbacks? Sisol is a delicate straw, it can NOT get wet under any circumstances, no rain at all, it’ll make it wrinkle up,and it’s almost impossible to steam them. So it’s a luxury hat, not a hat to bring to the beach or anything, it’s a dressy hat to wear to work, or to a restaurant, no bad weather or precipitation at all though, they’re delicate,

That’s a VERY good quality Panama, we ordered them custom, they arrived and the company changed a few of the specs, the safari type vents on the side were not in the original sample. So we wound up getting a break on the price,and selling them at cost, shipping a hat back to the manufacturer is just not possible, the shipping costs too much, and they’d never be able to remake them in time, so rather than return them, we get a break on the price. and put them on the sale rack. The quality is good, those sold at full price for a while.. I’d say it’s a great deal, half price,genuine handwoven Panama, good quality.. style wise it was just a little slow, but quality is great,

If you put one on a Panama, it might work, I think we sell rain covers at JJ hat center, it’s not on the website , but if u call and ask benji for a rain cover, we have them up front by the register. They rarely sell.and the packaging looks like they haven’t changed since the 50’s, but I think u can call and get one, they’re not nice looking though it might work on a classic Panama,, the elastic is pretty strong though, so I’m not sure if it’ll work, but it might, the shop is 800 622 1911
