Hi Bailey, recovered alcoholic here! I can chime in about the hangovers. When you’re drinking hard every day your body eventually gives up on giving you hangovers and just begins to accept the horror of being poisoned all the time. Then, when you start drinking 24/7 you never get a hangover at all! Yay! Except then if you try to stop, you could have a seizure and/or die. Not yay.

My grandpa ran a bar and he made something that was called near beer. He could sell it during prohibition. He did make his own liquor and sell that. One time the feds came in and took samples, and put the bottles in their coat pockets. While the feds were talking to my grandpa, my uncle took the samples from the feds pockets, and broke them in the alley. My grandpa would have gone to prison if my uncle hadn't picked the feds pockets. My grandpa the bootlegger.

My grandma told me about her mom sharing a recipe for bathtub wine with her at one point. Apparently my great-great-grandpa had made it (and had his kids help him) as a way to make some extra cash during Prohibition.

My great grandpa was a police officer that was injured on the job and became a moonshiner after he couldn't be an officer anymore. He was in the hills of West Virginia. Once a man wrecked his car after coming off Grandpa's mountain so the police found the moonshine in the car. The police made him a deal that they would give him the money (marked) to buy more from Grandpa Maddy. After he bought the moonshine, the cops raided his home and took all the money in the house to search for the marked bills. They never found the marked bills and left. Grandpa Maddy, his wife and my grandmother went through the money after the cops left and found the marked bill. The cops had missed it. :D Both sides of my family ran moonshine. I love the stories about what they got up to.

During Prohibition down in the mountains & backwoods of the rural South, moonshiners would work on their cars to make them go faster during their runs. (The better to outrun revenuers, my dear.) Eventually, one moonshiner would challenge another moonshiner to a race to see whose car was faster. Then instead of running from Point A to Point B, they'd create a track in the middle of nowhere or even race on the beach in places like Daytona, Florida. And that's how NASCAR got its start.

I believe the first armoured car (later used in presidential motorcades) was made during prohibition too. It was the beginning of the old model Ts being "suped" and dragged to out-maneuver the police.

yea i'm pretty sure sneaking in a substance that does no wonders to your body and is infamous for many domestic violence issues is not the most iconic and memorable thing humanity has ever done. there are better things people have done in history such as secretly freeing slaves from plantations and freeing children from the holocaust when the nazis weren't watching.

History books are always written by the “winners” so it’s always biased. I wanna hear the other side of the story. The stories from the hard working people that were IN IT. Totally agree with you. My guess on the hangovers: they weren’t as bad because sugar is the key thing that leads to hangovers. This is why wine will cause the worst hangover, because of the sugars. They they were drinking basically gasoline so it was more corn. It helped that they didn’t quit drinking so the hangover phase wasn’t as common because they just used the old keep drinking trip
