The Grinch Grinches the Cat in the Hat (also known as The Cat in the Hat Gets Grinched) is a 1982 American Emmy Award-winning animated musical television special and crossover starring the two characters created by Dr. Seuss, who also wrote and produced the special: The Cat in the Hat and The Grinch from How the Grinch Stole Christmas!. It premiered on May 20, 1982, on ABC and would be DePatie and Freleng's final Dr. Seuss special.

I think the Grinch's obsession with his mother might've been inspired by Prince John in Disney's ROBIN HOOD, who sucked his thumb whenever someone mentioned his mother (Eleanor of Aquitaine, in case you were wondering).

4:17 I think that's an interesting twist nonetheless however, largely because it's still a rarity, the Grinch was a worthy adversary for the Cat in the Hat due to challenging his idealism. It's like the odd times Bugs Bunny lost a cartoon and got frustrated as hell or something managed to truly depress Winnie the Pooh or Tigger. It's usually out of character, but that's why it's effective.

I think this cartoon is an excellent metaphor for one's inner battle. I've read that both characters were sort of his (Dr. Seuss') alter egos. The Grinch was the miserable, discontented and grumpy side of him, whereas the Cat was portraying his cheerful, kind and perceptive side. About the crossover - who hasn't had confrontation of his/her inner voices? One side of you tells you to be: "Yaay, life's good! There's hope and people are nice...", but the other one is like: "Naah, you're just making it all up again. Don't trust anyone, even yourself!" And if you lean on the negative side, it takes control and spoils everything. It can drive you nuts, until you don't know how to be anymore. Then you try to understand yourself: "Where is that all coming from? Why am I thinking like this? Where'd I got such bad habit to think all negatively?" Finally, your bright and rational side takes over the administration of your own mind and the "bad side" is required to withdraw.

I would actually love to see them try a crossover again. Animated of course, as that seems to be the only good way to tell a Seuss story. But rather than an unfocused story like this, I'd love to see it be a battle of wits. The psychotic and cunning mind of the Grinch going up against the unpredictable and illogical mind of the Cat in the Hat. I wouldn't even want them to fight like every cross over is trying to do. Just an entire movie of them trying to outsmart the other. Who would watch that, be honest.

Agent Orange I actually loved Horton Hears a Who. Sure it had some anime and dated references, but it is by far the best of the modern day adaptations. It stayed true to the story and the moral, didn't contradict itself like the Lorax did, Jim Carry was funny as hell, the characters were very expressive which kept it fun, and it even worked in a few other plot lines without being muddled up in each other. So there's still hope

That literally had nothing to do with their mothers having the same name That was Batman realizing that Superman has people he loves just like anyone else, Bats had lost his way for a long time but when his presumed enemy’s final words were basically “kill me all you want but please save my mothers life” he realized that enough is enough he’d lost his way and started killing criminal which is against Batman principal to begin with but he almost killed an innocent man that had nothing to do with anything and realizing that was his wake up call and before you bring up the fact that he was still killing, he’s been doing it for a while he won’t stop immediately, he’s on the right road he’ll be back on track soon In short: he was focused on the super but now he recognizes the man

I was going to complain that the Grinch doesn't looks more like a green Cat in the Hat than the actual Grinch in this... But in reference to the book, he DOES. The TV special of How the Grinch Stole Christmas actually made him look different... BETTER, but different.

I kinda like how this special handled that however, largely because the scheming expressions and acting still make him seem very divergent from the Cat in the Hat, which works in how Doug states, he's basically his evil counterpart.

So the Cat in the Hat stopped the Grinch by reminding him of his mother. Wait a minute, in Batman V Superman the name of their mother stopped their fighting. Wait a minute, in civil war it was Bucky killing iron man's parent which includes his mother that caused Iron man to fight Cap and Bucky in the end. WAIT A MINUTE!!! In Freddy vs Jason Freddy disguises as Jason's mother to make him go to springwood and kill people! WHAT IS IT WITH CROSSOVER VS MOVIES AND MOTHERS?!!! Was there a deleted scene in King Kong vs Godzilla where Godzilla talks smack about Kong's mother to get them fighting?

The Grinch was also a hell of a lot closer to the original story than the Cat in the Hat. They still changed things which is inevitable when you have to turn a fifteen minute cartoon into a 2 hour movie but Cat in the Hat seemed like it wasn't even trying to follow the original story at all. They didn't just add things to make the story longer they changed damn near every detail. That being said... is it weird that I still kind of want to see a live action version of this cross over with Jim Carrey and Micheal Myers reprising their roles?

There's no contest, the originals would win in every category because the reboots are complete garbage. Now I'm not just saying that because I grew up with the old ones and will snub anything new done to my favorite cartoons due to nostalgia, the reboots made so many unnecessary changes that they feel like entirely different shows from what they used to be.

On a side note, I like you can really see Friz Freleng's artistic style in this work as much as you could Chuck Jones' in How the Grinch Stole Christmas. The Grinch is basically a green Sylvester, but it amusingly works, with all those trademark scheming grins and scowls.

Well, Chuck Jones left after The Cat in the Hat (1971) and afterwards Friz Freleng with his partner David H. DePatie would do the remaining Dr. Seuss specials. So that’s the explanation for why the Grinch looks more like “a green Sylvester”.

Chris Wilson, tbh I choke up hearing the song about Thw Grinch's mother. It shows that even though the story did not make much sense, even for a Suessean cartoon, it showed that the Grinch had someone that he missed, and that really touches my heart. Even the most bitter of people are people you have to forgive because they might be missing someone, or going through something many may not know about.

Critic should do a crossover with his past and future again, but instead of his old and young self, it's the "classic" Nostalgia Critic crossing over with a future version of the Nostalgia Critic to help the current one.

I believe this was already done. He starts a review, then goes back in time to finish it as the old nostalgia critic, while the old nostalgia critic goes to the future. I forget how but they end up helping each other and it's actually got a really heartfelt meaning behind it. Change is inevitable but never stop being yourself.

James A Clouder Maybe his past self shows up to stop him reviewing the film, saying that he gave up reviews after the first film. Then his future self appears and says he finally retired after reviewing the second film. But then he finishes the review with their help and continues the series like normal.

Then take The Cat in the Hat, The Grinch, The Lorax, Sam I Am, The Once-ler, Horton(yes I know HHAW was made by a different company just go with it), Grammy Norma, Jojo Mcdodd, Cindy Lou Who, Mayor Mcdodd, Ted Wiggins, and Thing 1 and Thing 2. Then put them all in an RV send them on a road trip and see if they can survive each other.

I love the stuffing out of this special! Two of Seuss's most famous characters interacting with each other in a whimsical half-hour where nothing much happens, but darn if I'm not smiling all the way through! The crossover idea was played with later in Jim Henson Productions' "Wubbulous World of" show to mixed results; any chances of a review of that sometime, along with the other Nick Jr shows of the past? I'd kill for a good Rupert or Papa Beaver's Storytime retrospective. Oh, and Eureka's Castle, David the Gnome, Mysterious Cities of Gold...

I think it's about time that someone recognized this; you are doing a great thing by including a charity spotlight at the end of each episode. Many content creators have begun to start off their videos with "this episode of (insert name here) is sponsored by Loot Crate" and while I enjoy geek culture and goodies as much as everyone else here, I'm glad someone has decided to draw attention to organizations that devote themselves to helping people who need it. You're a good man, Doug Walker.

I actually really enjoy this Dr. Seuss TV special. Having the Grinch and the Cat in the Hat meet each other is a real treat, it has lots of fun moments, good songs, even the last one made me cry when I first saw it, and it has its own sense of charm and likability. But I would put this like 2nd or 3rd after the Chuck Jones Grinch in terms of Dr. Seuss TV specials.

I remember the it being called Grinch Grinches the Cat in the Hat. I can actually remember when this came out, because it was during the very height of my obsession with Seuss. But when you are a little kid in the 1980s, the fact that I am a mere 3 years older than Doug, means my memories of certain minutia of that time of a barrage of crazy, will be different, and in this case slightly amplified. It was a weirdly formative moment in my childhood that I had been looking forward to before it aired. Then I watched it. I was 4 and I thought it could fuck off then, it looked crappily animated, and it was the thing that actually made me notice animation quality comparisons and actually kind of ruined a lot of things for me. Like sketchy style Disney movies, low-quality sequels, Shirt T-t-t-t-ales.

I always feel weirded out when people say that talking to yourself means you're a psychopath. I talk to myself all the time. It's just a way to help keep your thoughts in order instead of having them all jumbled up in your head. I think it's actually been proven that if you talk to yourself, it can help increase self-awareness since it forces you to put your thoughts into actual words

In the crossover, the cat in the hat should've always had control whereas the grinch would remain frustrated his plans aren't working. It wouldn't cause either of them to break their usual personas.

Maybe the message was, anytime you feel like being a harsh bittersweet jerk that seeks to ruin the lives of others out of your frustration towards society, remeber the things that made you happy in life and that gave you comfort to remind yourself that "people are still good" (there is a song from Batman V. Superman titled "Men are still good", This IS Batman V. Superman's Inspiration!)
