Indeed, same with dubbing derisively someone (esp. a kid) who complains about everything in an exaggerated manner as an “Aurore, enfant martyr”. Because any complaint they would have are molehills compared to the sufferings the real Aurore had to go through. BC here only surfs on what Marie-Anne (and to a lesser degree her father) did inflict on Aurore. Everyone knows about Aurore’s story here in Quebec, mostly because of the 50s exploitation movie retelling the story. Some of the pictures used here are from that movie, and people were so shocked they believed it was real. Even the actress who played the stepmother was insulted, spat upon, and threatened with violence multiple times in the streets or while she was doing her groceries, because they believed she was really the sadistic stepmother.

Her death was a blessing compared to the life she had, but she didn't die in vain. So many laws and reforms happened after that case. Also, the reason why in Quebec we didn't go to school for as long as simply because of English Canada trying to kill the French speaking and Catholic culture of Quebec. It was more the way of the times in many ways. Child abuse in this country did not become a topic or become a legal problem for parents until the 1960s. Television documentaries and specials as well as the more open discussions of subjects in the 60s is what led to reforms here. I would think it the same in Canada. Back when Aurore was alive children were considered property of the parents.

@@stacyrussell460 I agree that many have fallen thru the cracks, ect. But, what I am stating is there really were no cracks back then. Children were property of the parents and there were very few if any laws regarding abuse. Unless the kid died there was little anyone could actually do including the law. Look up Dennis Jerguns. A child adopted in the early 60s and thought beaten to death by mother. The neighbors knew when he was no longer around and was killed. But, nothing was done and no investigation was done. It was not until there were new Child Abuse laws in place many years later that the mother was taken to trial. In the meantime she was allowed to adopt again.

I love the fact that you ladies can now decide that children just aren't for you. It had to be so hard for these women back then bc she were suppose to be married off and gone with kids by 18. Also back then women couldn't survive without a husband bc women weren't allowed to work, depending on what decade were discussing but definitely before the 1900s. So u had to be married off and there wasn't really birth control so u was expected to just keep dropping em out 1 by 1. So the fact that y'all can now be honest and say I got things I wanna do with my life and I don't see kids in those plans is wonderful.

Yep, seems as though Canadian officials (snd laws/sentencing too) almost follow in Britain’s path! As in, way too nice. Too much bleeding-heart energy. Too much “fellow humans need love too” towards psychos. Towards child killers and rapists. It’s insane. All the things I read about the RCMP and their failing of victims; with their lackadaisical approach to missing person reports being filed, and just their bizarre ideas of “initiative”-taking. I’m not saying they’re all bad. There are bad seeds everywhere. And good apples too. But we’re gonna hear about the really bad ones, whether they try to hide it or not. I am not a very mean person, however I believe in eye for an eye… especially for criminals involved in horrific cases with either kids, animals, unspeakable torture and sex assault, kidnapping, or bodily mutilation (while victims are dead or alive). In those instances, I say bring back the death penalty for an eye for an eye vindication. Justice for the victims. If they survived torture, the torturer should be given the same! I mean, why is that such a concept? Plus in today’s modern first world, we don’t hang or behead or electrocute convicts anymore, nope; that’s too beneath us! Gasp! You mean… like their treatment of their victim was beneath human dignity? Nope; now the depraved ones will lay down, strapped to a table, get a little cocktail shot in the arm and go to sleep forever. And that’s AFTER being given their choice of last meal. What?! Why offer any choice, you mean choice like they gave their victims? Why? I mean, unless they’re truly innocent and shouldn’t die, and it’s a fluke and the system has failed the convicted one as well… usually only after waiting an entire lifetime to BE EXECUTED at all. Lol. A joke.

Everything.doesn't have to be titted and tatted. He was a weak male.....pretty much spineless. Just because he was alive and moving through life, doesn't mean that he had life flowing through him. Men and women are protectors. But for men their level of protection and dignity is revealed in how they deal with their own (whether or not it's their immediate family). They will also defend and protect others in a Just and fair way, when they have been allowed to see or become privy to anything unacceptable. Everyone that witnessed the abuse that she was enduring didn't witness it so that they could collect random information. We're all allowed to see and become privy to things for reasons that are meant to do something about it. I recently saw a video of a group of men that beat down a man for sexually assaulting a family member. There was a woman that was talking about awareness and how the community needs to become aware of such villains. Meanwhile, this initiative doesn't need to be brought to anyone's attention. Anytime children are involved or anyone that's vulnerable (in the sense of doesn't know better) thoae that do, should always be on point.

It's not fair to judge these people for their actions over 100 years ago. Even 50 years ago you didn't stick your nose in other peoples business or tell them how to raise their children. Why, even today many parents will say that same thing. It was quite obvious the neighbors were outraged and even complained to the authorities, but nothing of substance was ever done to save these children. It's easy to sit in judgement in this day and age, and anybody can say they would have stepped in if they were around back then, but nobody ever did. It took too many cases like this to finally cause enough outrage to tighten up the laws and offer more protection for innocent children.

I can't help but think about the evaluation from the school teachers -- that she was bright and intelligent. I'm glad everything the parents did to that child finally caught up with them. Marianne Hood lived every bit up to the image of the evil stepmother. Once they became aware of Aurore's physical condition (bruising cuts, etc.), her relatives should have tried to observe exactly what misbehavior her parents were talking about that demanded the kind of severe discipline they felt they needed to mete out to the child. People who beat up their children only teach them to not get caught. Physically assaulting children (that’s what it amounts to) takes the place of talking to them, explaining things, teaching values; consequences are necessary but they should be similar to the consequences that occur in life…if you rob a bank, you go to jail, you don’t get beaten up. Consequences when I was growing up were always loss of privileges.

Ghastly. It seems the kids of abusive parents have their spirits broken and become completely passive and accepting of the torture. Aurore was in the hospital for two months...she had a thousand opportunities to tell the staff what was going on, or to beg for a phone call to the police. Ditto with her few days spent in school. She could have walked out the door and taken her chances on the street, it couldn't have been any worse. At least she would have been picked up by a cop and could tell her tale of horror. As soon as I heard the stepmother was sentenced to death, I knew the sentence would be commuted! It always is, for women, no matter how heinous the crime. Unreal.

Oh, please. They know they do little, if any good, but go right on, drawing their salaries and benefits. It is a scam on the taxpayers. The same applies to elder abuse. No one helps them eithet.

The worst part was the description of her hands and arms at the post mortem. Stripped to the bone? All I can think of is burns, but it's a terrible thing to consider.

I grew up with my mom telling me that I was not "Aurore l'enfant martyre“ (Aurore the martyr child" when I would be dramatic (I was often dramatic) . Now that I'm an adult and have access to the internet I realise how that was a wrong expression. But her case opened up the discussion on child protection in Québec. I guess that's the silver lining.

Ben voyons, c'est dont ben dégueulasse comme commentaire. Je comprends pas. Si Aurore était dramatique, ça aurait fait ben plus de bruit.

Still to this day, nobody will name her newborn baby Aurore. There is too much stigma and sadness about this name. Also, was very common for my mother to say "Don't be an Aurore" whenever I would cry. This child's torment touched a whole nation and still to this day, this name only brings shivers and sadness.

The original movie was so powerful and hard that people thought the actress playing the mother in law was actually torturing the child and would be stoned in the streets.

Thank you Briefy. What a tragic tale. The early releases were surprising, too, since I think the actual, original, sentences were justified.

This was so sad. People tried to help her, but no one could. She was left to fend for herself until she couldn't. I can't believe he stayed in contact with her. I suspect he knew about her involvement with his other childrens demise also. I'm late getting to watch this week, but I finally made it. Lol! Like always, thank you Mr. Case. Having to watch late is better than not getting to watch at all. 😁

This was a tragedy that happened back in the '20s but still happens all over the world. A man or woman loses their spouse, remarries or brings another person into the family. Often, that parent works long hours and is the sole provider, blindly putting their trust in the stepparent to watch over the children. A few years ago, in the city near where I live, a little two-year-old girl was killed by her stepmother who left her out in the cold to die during a winter night in February. Her father had been living with his girlfriend for about a year (his spouse had died in a car accident just after his daughter's birth). He worked nights and never noticed the abuse. When the autopsy was done, she had dozens of healed fractures all over her body. The father was oblivious to all and when on trial, he declared that he often noticed his daughter was battered on her legs and arms, but his girlfriend told him that she had fallen down the stairs, was clumsy, etc. It happens today, maybe even more than before. Reminds me of the case of the American man who married an Australian woman he met online that ended up killing his little girl.

I would have sympathy for the father, except that he continued writing his wife. The woman who murdered his child. The little girl was tortured to death. He must have noticed his daughter's wounds and timid behavior, but choose not to defend, protect his wife for her severe disciplinary methods. He didn't care. He wanted a wife, not his child.

That poor little soul, what a horrible life she endured.I can not understand friends, neighbours etc not demanding she be removed from that home, surely one of her relatives could have taken her in and made her life so much nicer. Her father was weak and uncaring and that cow he married unfeeling.Wonder if she was responsible for any of the other children's deaths.Such a sad tale and may your little body R.I.P. Does anyone think she or the father had anything to do with the previous children's death? It always baffles me how parents sometimes only take it out on one child, but maybe she was trying to annihilate his kids? Horrible though so many people saw it and couldn't help. RIP poor soul

When someone takes it out on one person, it’s so much easier to gaslight. It’s also so psychologically crushing that it ensures the victim will have no self-esteem and never dream of reporting what’s going on.

Horrendous! I sincerely hope those twins got a new family and never had to know that their mother was a murderer. I also hope that Marie never had contact with either of her parents again. Her stepmother was truly wicked. Pregnancy does change some aspects of a woman’s emotions (having had two kids myself), but I sure as hell never beat my children! She was pathological before getting pregnant, that’s for sure. Have you ever examined the case of Little Mary Phagan? That would make an interesting video.

I was in Quebec (Rouyn) when this movie was released I went with my french husband and my inlaws. There were no english subtitles so I didn't understand the language but it was such an incredibly powerful story that you didn't need subtitles. It was horrifying and tragic. That poor little girl suffered unnecessarily at the hands of animals who paraded as humans.
