The tenth day of my journey around China, where I travel from Shanghai, to Chongqing, Chengdu, Xi'an and Beijing. I head to the historic Forbidden City, and find incredible views from Jingshan Park. I then explore Tiananmen Square, after overlooking it from the balcony of Tiananmen Gate. In the evening, I walk around Wangfujing, one of Beijing's most famous shopping streets, with some of the strangest food I've ever seen.

A big bowl of noodles and dumplings for breakfast. That's a good way to kick off the day.

Cool video! Just a sidenote about the rickshaw guys, anyone planning to use one, double check the price, as they will quote you a price and then after you get off to pay, they say the price is for each person, effectively making it double the price.

Any problems with the smog? Is the air quality improving? I am thinking of an April-May trip to mainland China next year. Thanks.

It’s been a couple of years since I filmed this video, so I’m a little out of touch, so probably best to check online for the latest information. Although, you can easily pick up a pm2.5 mask if the pollution is a concern for you. Just as a precaution.

@Traveling Guy I thought I would throw in my two cents. You will be safe in most parts of Asia. If you have a chance, add at least a week to your vacay and visit Hong Kong or a place like Bangkok or Tokyo in addition. Three weeks is more ideal, if you can pull it off. Lots of fun, interesting places in Asia where you can feel safe. Safe travels.

@Traveling Guy Hey man, I understand all of your concerns. A lot of westerners visit China every year, it's not a big deal. Yes, there are some difficulties you will have to face - but I think you may be pleasantly surprised. Language is the biggest barrier, just make sure you have the Chinese translation of wherever you want to go (to show taxi drivers). Most people can't really speak English, it's probably a good idea to learn a few basic phrases. Make sure you have a VPN before you go, otherwise you won't be able to connect to Google, KZfaq, Facebook etc. Additionally, have the trip planned out, so you're prepared and know where you're going beforehand. It doesn't have to be all booked and a super tight schedule, just ensure you know how your going to get from A to B. I wouldn't worry about contacting home, rules are rarely enforced in China (from my experience) and likely no one will care unless you start doing something suspicious. Good luck!

@Traveling Guy I would go to TripAdvisor for your answers. I have only been to Hong Kong & Macau. If you only have a week, going to be rushed and stressful wherever you go. 2 weeks minimum, 3 weeks better. Solo travel is fun, but in a big place, often best to find a travel partner. Good luck.

Most of the parks, especially those in Beijing, should be free so long as you have a visitor visa and your passport. Not sure if they had discontinued it but it was definitely a thing back in 2015.

to eat a starfish you peel the legs apart to get at the soft flesh, you don't eat tough, salty - inedible - skin.

starfish is not to be eaten like that - you have to peel the legs apart and suck out the insides, the rest is inedible

They accepted mine from a UK university everywhere in China. The only place they didn't was at the Terracotta Warriors. Worth a try anyway, I feel like they're pretty inconsistent and it just depends on the person who you buy your ticket from.
