The Importance of SWIMMING

This video has taken me some time to make, both for editing reasons and, obviously, personal reasons. I wanted to make something with heart and care, and not post the usual. This new format is something I would love to return to.
In this video essay, I discuss SWIMMING's themes surrounding mental health and unique ways to cope, as well as observe Mac's career up until this point and his affect he had on the lives of many. This one's for me, this one's for Malcolm, and this one's for you.
My hope is you can watch this and gain a special takeaway, whether it aids your own mental health or grieving. Either way, this was made to celebrate a man who was always honest, genuine, and constantly creating. A true friend of the people.

I think it needs to be said. Sometimes you have to stop for a second and try to catch your breathe. Swimming is good an yes you not drowning if you swimming. But stop and think where are you swimming to? Up or down? or in circles? We are creatures of routine. A double edged sword after all.

NONPHIXION 47 that’s what I’ve always assumed. It’s weird for Mac to be found is an absolutely spotless house with almost no signs of drugs besides a little coke on his body. It’s just weird when you look at it. He overdosed on a coke and fentynal mix, mixed with alcohol. He was experienced with drugs enough to know that coke and alcohol don’t mix terribly well so I think he did it on purpose

Max Rooks he didn’t do it on purpose because the toxicology said the amount of coke and alcohol he did wasn’t enough to kill him. Fentanyl ended his life. He probably posted that and then deleted it once he felt himself getting weak, he was found in a praying position also

I think its more likely that someone cleaned up the house after finding him. I personally think if it was a suicide he wouldn't have used a recreational amount. But either way we are left without him 💔

Circles is his best album imo, with Faces in second and Swimming in third. Circles to me hit the same way Swimming did for you, acceptance of yourself. Swimming is just as good, and honestly i would go as far as coupling both that and Circles together as one big beautiful project that finally gave into the acceptance of his death and his self identity.

This perfectly encapsulates not only my thoughts on the album, but on mental health in art, and I’m so glad you took the time to put this together, as I think it’s a topic that isn’t discussed nearly enough. Not only that, but I appreciate how you opened yourself up to all of us; using your personal struggles with mental health to connect to Mac’s art and to show the struggles you face as a creator and a human. I remember the first time I listened to Swimming straight through on an hour+ long drive, and thinking to myself how I can’t wait to hear his next album. I reach my destination, with my phone blowing up along the way, only to find out he passed within that hour. Mac Miller was the first “celebrity death” that hit me right in the feels, and there hasn’t been a day since that I haven’t listened to at least one of his songs. There is so much genius, love, and passion in his music that I wish I could have appreciated more while he was alive. Like you he was a friend that didn’t know he was my friend, and he’s one of those artists that you wish you could meet before a tragedy like this happens. RIP Mac Miller, you touched more lives than you could have imagined.

I also pictured Mac watching this and thinking about what kind of an impact he has had on Tabby and many others. The fact that he has encouraged many people to swim is beautiful. I also like to think about him, or any other artist for that matter, hearing some fan interpreting his lyrics in their own way. Could you imagine that you make a song about something close to you, some fan hears it and thinks it's about an other thing that's close to him, he puts up a video explaining his own interpretation and you as the original artist watch it and you realize something you've never even thought of before. I can't explain what I'm thinking about, but the main point is that *it's just so beautiful that there's 8 billion interpretations to everything.*

I had to pause this for a few moments to type this. I normally hate to do so before I finished watching a video but this is hitting me "right in the feels", as they say... You made me realize so much in the first 5 minutes of this video it's sort of unreal. Without going into great detail, I've been stuck in a loop the past few weeks - maybe even months - of my life and as stupid as it may sound; just hearing some those words made me want to start swimming again. Thank you so much for this video (already), Tabby. You're human; and a really amazing one at that.

His death affected me and affects me way more than i ever thought someone i never personally knew could. I listened to him since kids. Even when people stopped i started to enjoy his personal stuff more and more. often playing it for hours. I had just listened to the swimming singles that released and then all of it when he released it on youtube. I cried after he passed. His music did way more for me and many of m/his generation thani thought. Im the same age as him. I grew up along side him almost. He didnt feel like a celebrity, he felt like a friend

After a full listen of "Watching Movies With The Sound Off" I could feel an overwhelming sense of an end of days mentality in the mind of Mac. I'm glad he made SWIMMING that was his opus, he knew his death was coming, you could hear it in his lyrics. SWIMMING was the last album he was destine to make.

"2009" literally makes me cry whenever I hear it. Been a big fan since I was 17; 25 now and it still doesn't register in my mind that this kid is gone.. especially being so close in age. Even typing this now I have tears in my eyes. (thank you for that lol as this video brought back the emotion). My first tattoo was his logo. Something I would try to hide being in corporate offices and shit, now I wear it proud. In 10 years this song will me cry, in 20 years it'll make me cry. On my death bed.. you get the idea. R.I.P Mac Man and thank you for articulating this into words--something a lot of us needed.

Honestly, making videos like these, satisfies my need to talk about topics like this. Discussing music, and what it means, is, for me, something that i like to do a lot. Partly because i love music. I mean, i love music. So when you talk about the deeper things tucked away inside albums, and about the artists who made them, is awesome. Plus the whole mental health thing your doing right now is honestly something that i think a lot of people my age need. I just turned 16. Im in my sophmore year in highschool. Just a regular nigga who loves music, and culture, but doesnt have the time to experience any of it. But i apreciate you making videos like this. You make my day my dude. One thing about the end, he tweeted that he wanted John brion to make the violins at the end of “so it goes” sound like “an Ascension to heaven” and then the night he passed he posted his very last video, it was the ending of so it goes playing on a record player. I got ROS tatted in bold old English writing on my chest. Every morning I wake up and see it and remember that time back in 09 when I was 9 years old and how happy I was and how happy mac made me. Wow. Perfect video. Mac left with his most challenging and personal album, as you said this must be the hardest point of his loss, apart from the incredible and highly respected human being he was. I think I will always remember my second listen of Swimming, right after we learned his death. It had such a huge impact on me. I'm having difficulties writing the end of this comment but just know that your video may have been just as therapeutic as this album was. You've been very brave for making such a personal thing. Thank you for people like you or me, this is important. Also I know that it must represent a huge amount of work, but this new format perfectly suits you, don't hesitate to make it again if you have time and more importantly if you want to.

This is incredibly beautiful. I had the same feeling when listening for the first time. It’s like a sedative coming through my speakers. His final gift. I try to rationalize it by saying maybe we go when our job is done. At the moment of our final opus. I don’t know. Yes I do. I know I wanted more of swimming. I wanted that life to unfold and evolve. I’m from Pittsburgh, minutes away from blue slide park. Here, drugs are an epidemic and as common as a cold. We often go decades being “fine”. He definitely always was from where he was from. Thank you for making this.

I’ve really needed to see this. I’ve been struggling with thoughts like these for a long time, as I’m sure a lot of people watching this have. It’s relieving and ironically worrying to see that people are stuck in the same position. Thank you for giving the thoughts that a lot of us struggle with a voice, Tabby. I interpreted the album as a story of dealing with drug abuse and recovery; come back to earth is coming down and and feeling disappointed with yourself. He also said "i've been taking too much, got stuck in oblivion", probably referencing being too high for too long, like an accidental overdose or another traumatic experience that leads to him deciding to stop. Later in the album he is starting to deal with the problem and working with himself to get better, even though he its hard.

I love the connections to Mac and real life problems, I love how u can put the situation in anyone’s shoes. I’m sorry, we all have our own problems of course but the internal struggles hold us back the most. We all miss Mac and see his internal struggle, learn and adapt to your surroundings, there’s always home somewhere.

Wisdom was shared by the man, Tabby and tears will be shed. For a first-time video essay, this is incredible. I might sound like I'm hyping you up, but I'm serious. This has a lot more intricate, in-depth details about not only about Mac Miller's swimming as a whole, but also the art in mental health. This, to me, is probably the most humane thing you've ever created. Unintentionally, you taught me so many things about not only the message BEHIND Swimming but most importantly the means to be human, to be openly vulnerable, to... Well, swim to move forward in life and not get stuck in the same area to protect yourself because of the "What if-" thoughts in your brain... All I'm saying is... The thing about Mac’s music is that each piece of music he released describes an extremely similar experience I was going through, even around the same time; luckily including Swimming. After his death I felt as if I lost my best friend whom I’ve never known. I coped with that feeling, using heroin laced with fentanyl which is the same drug that killed him. I realized that was basically the equivalent of me spitting on his face, but Mac and I coped the same way, with drugs. While in this dark time, I had Faces on repeat everyday. I realized that his music is immortal and will continue to help those for generations to come. Now I’m clean, and finally feel like I’m swimming. You left us with a beautiful piece of art and I will never let your memory die. Rest up easy Mac with the cheesy raps❤️

I have been going through depression for over a year, and I am still going through it to this day. I feel like nobody in this world understands me, and, to be honest, I want my pain to end. I don’t know if anyone else can relate the two, but this reminds me of one of NakeyJakey’s serious videos, like his “how bioshock saved me” video, these videos are important for us viewers I think because it shows were all the same and we all have similar stories and we should love each other more, just a thought

Macs music has helped me more times than i can count. This specific album brought me back from suicide. Anytime im going thru some rly tough shit i can always rely on mac ❤ One of my favorite lines from this album "win or lose, i dont keep track. Nobodys counting"

Today was supposed to be the day I would see him live. Swimming as a whole is life changing to me. It helped me realize that I need to get help for my anxiety and depression. The saying "the beauty of being flawed" represents this album perfectly. I've been a fan of Mac for years and was absolutely devastated when I found out he had passed away. I had pre ordered his merch the day before he passed. I was also getting ready to purchase the tickets for his show in philly I just waiting for my friend to respond if he wanted to go. Mac Miller basically saved my life and I got a tattoo of the scuba diver just 2 weeks after he died. This is easily your best video well done Tabby. Long Live Malcom James McCormick.
