How To Plant! The Incredible Self Watering Pop Bottle Garden Grow System!
• How To Plant! The Incr...
I hope you enjoy making this system as much as I did! I spent all last winter at work( I work overnights') thinking about the design of this system! I wanted it to be simple yet a system that could be expanded and made as large as you wanted! I also wanted to be able to utilize most all of the 2 liter pop bottle for growing medium that way larger plants might be grown in it! I also wanted to make it so you could water it 3 different ways! As always the main purpose that I make these systems is to encourage the most inexperienced gardener to have fun gardening! I feel this system has a flexibility that is unique that it can be easily transported or given as a gift! Complete with planted veggies! Anyway let your imagination run with this idea and make it large or small according to how you would like it! I hope you enjoy this video and if I can help in anyway please comment or PM me! Larry Hall

It does my heart good when I stumble on to folks that freely share their ideas, that help other folks and expect nothing in return. Pay it forward, brother. ;-) May your special gift infect evey heart you touch.

@@LisaV751 Yet it's so saddening how much lack of trust and suspicion there is in the world today. Even in tiny, rural communities, such as mine. There is no sense of unity, communities or tribes anymore. Everyone is conditioned to believe that everyone must have some kind of hidden agenda, or at the very least, a few screws loose. Some folks, such as myself, because I was born dirt poor and will probably die dirt poor, it doesn't matter to me, just want to be able to freely share the gifts given to them, for the needs and benefit of others, while we are still graced with the time to do so. Today is a gift, and no one knows when those gifts will stop coming. Then, we all leave this world with the same thing we came into it with, nothing. It would be so easy to make this community self sufficient. It has it's own well, tapped into a underground river. With what my grandparents taught me, they raised 8 boys, 1 girl, my mom, a bunch of grandkids, on a self sufficient horse and apple ranch that is still completely off grid, I was able to set up a food/farm animal forest in Kansas, and then again in Arizona. We stored what we could for long term, but most of the produce was freely given to neighbors and foodbanks. Duck eggs, there was a bunch of them, and rabbits were sold or traded for almost nothing, just enough to cover their feed, which wasn't needed after the third or fourth season because that was being grown also. ;-) It wouldn't take much to setup some solar panels or wind turbines to keep the well going, here in this high, very open, desert valley.

Natureboy Bryon Interestingly, I think people are starting to see things differently because of the virus. More like what you’re saying. Alone, we are nothing much. With our community, we can survive. Alone is too hard. Together is so much easier. I really think that good is coming from these tough times. I believe this is all for a reason, and one that we probably could not understand fully.

@@LisaV751 I sure hope so. This area, being basically a retirement community, folks are pretty set in their ways, trying to be nice about it. Just had a new neighbor that moved in a couple of months ago, a snowbird from Wisconsin or Minnesota, can't remember what his wife told me, walked across the dirt road last week, loaded up on liquid stupid, cause there's nothing better for them to do out here I guess, with a couple of his drinking buddies, yelling and screaming at me and my son, accusing me of having a drug lab and having drug runners coming in and out of my house all the time! SMDH And they came up on the property and threatened to beat up my special needs son. The so called drug runners are, a friend of my sons that we've known since he was a little boy. And the other is the wife of a friend of mine that I've known for 30 year's that lives on the other side of this tiny town and he is almost dead from cancer and they have a 19 year old deaf/mute daughter, and she needs help taking care of them once in a while. My son, because of his issues, got scared with all these drunk bullies up in his face, from what I was told, threatened to get his dads shotgun if they didn't leave him alone. One of the drunks wifes called the cops. When the cop showed, about an hour later, he confirmed that there was no gun involved. He was pretty nice about it and kind of laughed it off cause none of the drunks were willing to talk about what happened. One of them actually called my landlord and told him that my son threatened someone with a shotgun!!! He wanted to know what I was doing about it! I told him nothing, because there was no gun ever involved. Just three old bored bullies filled with liquid stupid, up on the property, making threats to my son, and then to me, when I came out. If you choose not to believe me, just call the cops, they made a report on it. Trust me, the way my grandfather raised me and taught me around firearms, no guns where involved. His version of gun control was hitting what you aim at the first time. And you NEVER, EVER pull out a gun without the FULL intention of using it.

I hope all your viewers realize you haven't tried to make one penny from these. We owe you big time, Larry. It has been so much fun to do these projects. Wouldn't that be the day. Unfortunately this nation has turned its back on 'the creator' and we are left to reap what we have sown. Nothing but judgment left for the good ol' US of A I'm afraid. The Lord won't smile upon a nation that murders millions of babies and condones every abomination known to man. Not only do we condone it but we find joy in those who commit such acts. The days of decent 'apple pie' kind of people are turning over to the days of loving nothing but self and pleasure. Our government has effectively destroyed the family and what's being produced in the state indoctrination centers is frightening to say the least. May the Lord Jesus Christ bless and keep you. I know- I'm a whack job.

Here's a little trick for you. When you cut the end of the poly bag that the zip ties come in, they have a tendency to spill out and it's annoying to keep gathering them up to put them back in the bag. So instead, cut a small slit halfway down the bag 90 degrees to the edge. You can then pull out the zip ties with your fingers and they don't spill out of the bag all the time.

Here's a tip: The all-time great thing for removing adhesive is orange oil. You can use the good stuff from the cooking store which is intended to be used like vanilla extract. Or you can buy something like "Goof Off" which has orange oil in it as the active ingredient. I once bought a little set of three citrus oils: Orange, Lemon, and Lime. I used the lemon to make lemon poppyseed muffins. All three oils worked great for removing adhesive. Plus, it makes your house smell terrific. Very interesting video, by the way!

My mom used to grow and sell african violets in New Orleans. There were two systems that worked really well. One system was a ceramic pot in a ceramic pot. The inner pot was not glazed on the bottom to allow some water passage, while the outer pot was glazed for appearance. The second system simply used a wick made from panty hose. Cut off a circle from a leg; open the circle up. It will roll into a tube or string. Poke the string into the bottom of a pot with potting soil and allow the wick hang into the watering fluid. Both of these methods work because roots that are too wet will rot. Roots need air!! Both methods assure the right amount of fluid and air at the same time. I mention watering fluid because the second thing my Mother discovered, was Volkman's violet food.Very good stuff, and not just for violets either. Violets went from dying in the kitchen window to filling the kitchen, all the bedrooms, a two car garage with triple layer shelves. Wick pots and good (?) liquid plant food mixed in the water is the BEST! If you have no luck growing things, try this. --Pinchmesh

Here's an idea for your self watering system. Use a plastic barrel (50 gal) and raise it to increase H2O pressure. Install a connector for a hose into the bottom, and run the hose to your garden system. Catch the runoff rain from nearby buildings to supply the water. Rain H2O is better to water with anyway, cheaper, self sustaining etc. (using your float system of course)

Your self watering project is great. We moved from Texas to the south of Italy and watering is an ongoing problem, I would like to adapt your idear for larger number of bottles and size, we buy our wine here in gallon jars so with a larger base we can use up to ten in each unit. the top I can make from polystryn form. As we have lots of sun and heat here I can now use the larger pots for larger plants. Thanks for your great idear. Best wishes Roy

Larry, to get the sticker remnants off what best works is regular vinegar. Wet a kitchen sponge with vinegar and dab the sticker remnants until well wet. Let it sit for a few minutes, then scratch it all off easily using something that has a hard edge, like a knife or a fork. Fingernails work too, but a long hard edge works best. The vinegar dissolves the glue. If it doesn't all come off on the first go, just re-wet it with more vinegar and let it sit for another few minutes. I've been doing this all my life and thought everyone knew. I'm happy I can teach you something, Larry, after you have been teaching me your tips and tricks for a good long while.

I had to take a nap just from trying to stay with him too while he took his shots of Black Jack (?) and smoked a cigarette. When he was testing the water level in the bottle he had a cigarette burning in the ashtray. Geez! Sorry Jack, but you don't need that cigarette when you're making a video. I'm worn out, but, I will try this as soon as I go out and buy the drills, the soldering iron, the tub, the Walmart bag, the 1-1/4 drill and whatever else I need. Thanks

I was so afraid Larry would leave me hanging and not return between video takes, but as the man repeatedly promised, he came back EVERY time! Larry, to put all BPA fears to rest, your link has many educated responses, but nothing conclusive, and the FDA has proven itself unreliable too many times. How hard would it be to have some of your plants/produce tested for BPA or other possible plastic-related toxins at a local university? If the end result of your system - which I find very clever for many reasons - could be demonstrated as safe, it would ease the minds of what appears to be a considerable amount of growers.

+Alessandra Martellacci If I came across as one of the worry-warts, it was unintentional. What's the purpose that the little float valve is sold for normally? I hadn't seen one of those before. That would work well with a water tank above the level of the planter. I wouldn't hook it directly to the water supply though, because just too much pressure involved. Could be mishaps.

So what kind of plastic are these bottles? These bottles aren't made for long-term sun exposure, they break down. They are making bottles more and more unstable purposely to cut down on the life in a land fill. Hopefully you aren't eating too many chemicals in your garden...keep it natural buddy!

Great idea to self water, but using PLASTIC bottles & SPRAY PAINTING them & removing glue for pop bottle labels with PAINT THINNER... all things that I wouldn't even put NEAR ANY ORGANIC, NON GMO plants I'm growing... POOOOOOOOOOR idea..... Did this guy THINK about the effects of the products he's using... even PLASTIC pop bottles exposed to sunlight has been PROVEN that the plastic toxins are absorbed into the water or whatever's in the bottle... GREAT IDEA of self watering, but plastic bottles is DEFINITELY WRONG..... unless of course you don''t give a shit about poisoning your foods...

@GizmoaGames

+Rick X That is what the paint is for, preventing the plastic from eroding and also why the part in the water does not have paint on it, and why the outside is painted rather than the inside. Not everyone has the luxury of specially made equipment or space, and this is a brilliant design to make the most/safest route possible for these situations. Unfortunately, it is likely just as safe or even safer than a lot of the commercially made plastic potting items in the end because there are next to no regulations when it comes to what materials are actually used when making those. As for the turpentine, that will have left the picture before ever getting to the soil/water stage.... well it will unless you count a plant that produces them growing in a container, lol.
