Well... Friggin New Jersey, right? Actually, I like New Jersey. Parts of it, anyways. Princeton's nice... ;-) I discovered them in '81, Modern World LP. I was fascinated by the look of the band, especially the guy in the sweater with the electrical tape arrows and the Who button on it... ;-)

@@modfather1965 I am an original 1977 pUnK, I am not a MOD, although I do respect the 1960's Mod scene and bands like ;The Who, Small Faces, Kinks, etc but love ;The Pretty Things, Yardbirds, Love, Electric Prunes etc etc . The Jam were going nowhere before 'The pUnk Revolution' happened in 1976' they played to 'punk' crowds for 3 years before that '6 month MOD Revival happened' In the City is an amazing 'pUnK rOcK' song from the time and I thank you for simplifying the way how to play it. I am an advocate of 'open strings' in between chord changes to add 'colour' ! Cheers dx

A cheap on it sounds bad

I'm using a Boss ME-50 multi effects pedal on this one, running through two amps. My amp setting are nothing unusual--just running through the AC30's top end, and the Roland's bright setting. It's the ME-50's compression, reverb, mild chorus, and especially distortion settings that give me this sound. I highly recommend getting one of these pedals. You can probably nab on off Ebay for less than $150 now they've been around for some 8-10 years. Great pedal...

Hey Paul... I'm glad you found me. The Jam were my favorite at 17, and their still my favorite... I like lots of different types of music (as I'm sure you do), and I've gone through various phases (e.g., classic jazz, classical, Motown, etc.), but The Jam still compel me and my sensibilities like no other. Weller is a demi-god, IMO, even if his latest musical attempts haven't inspired me at all, the man has written so many great songs over the years that props will always have to be given. I'm glad you liked this video. I'd kinda like to do it over again, as I never quite nailed the riff here, but oh well... Enjoy that Rickenbacker of yours. Midnight blue is a lovely color scheme which I've never owned.

I'm not really sure I get all that close myself... A lot will depend upon what kind of gear you're working with, and what Jam song you're working on. Rickenbacker and Vox or Marshall will be best, of course, though I only recently learned that one of Weller's secret weapons was a lowly Peavey Backstage 30 amp from about 1979 (which I promptly went on Ebay and bought one from 1979 for less than $100...). I use a 60's-vintage Rickenbacker guitar with toaster pickups (Weller used a 70's Ric with high gains) running into a Boss Me-50 multi-effects pedal going into two amps (Vox AC30 & Roland Jazz Chorus 50). Then, I tweak the effects (mainly distortion, compression, and reverb) until it sounds somewhat close...

Many people focus on Weller's lovely Vox and Marshall amps he had behind him, but if you watch the Jam's appearance on Something Else (the same episode that featured Joy Division), you'll notice the Marshall amp isn't the one that's actually mic'd up, it's a cheapo solid state Peavey Back Stage 30 amp off to the side. You can find these for super cheap and they sound really great - I see them around for $50-$80. They have that cold, metallic, biting distortion that Weller's Ric's had, note clarity in the individual strings but still very grating and no "warmth" that all the blues dads seem to be looking for. I've also found myself getting close to that sound by using a DOD Looking Glass pedal, which has a sort of Vox Top Boost-ish type of overdrive sound running into a really clean 70's silverface fender twin. I think the key is letting some type of solid state pre-amp section do the overdrive and not relying on speaker breakup or power tubes being pushed, it's a very solid state tone. Also, some of the recordings, his engineer built a metal enclosure around the amps to get even more of that metallic sound, so it's going to be hard to get that exactly. Lastly, I'm not sure what year Rickenbacker stopped doing this, but older Ric 330's had a 0.0047uF capacitor on the bridge pickup (replacing the wire between the switch and the bridge pickup's volume knob). This cap served as a mild high pass filter, filtering out some of the lows and making the bridge even more trebly sounding. I can't say whether his Rics had these or not, but it's possible. I've had trouble finding the years they stopped putting this cap in the guitars. Some people install a push pull pot on the 5th knob wiring the cap into circuit so if they pull the knob up, it engages the 0.0047uF cap into the circuit and pushing it down bypasses it to stock.

It depends upon what city you're in (e.g., San Fran and L.A. have huge scenes), and it depends upon what type of scene you're referring to. As you know, not all mods are cut from the same cloth. For example, in Utah, scooter culture isn't necessarily mod, per se, as some are more skin-head, and some are more traditionally 60's clean-cut mod. Just last night, my wife and I met with some friends and went to a little "mod" get together for dinner/drinks/dance party up in Ogden (a small city about 40 miles north of Salt Lake City). There were maybe 30 people there, and some scooters. What a scene really needs to thrive, I find, are some good local mod bands. Right now, there's none of that in SLC...

Nice... I wouldn't mid having a late 70's white or all black 330 with Hi Gains just for sentimentality's sake. But yes--Toasters allow you to control the sound much better. With a good pair of amps and effects, Toasters can kick some serious ass...

+modfather1965 neither would I! I have a '79 4001 to satisfy my inner Bruce fantasies. My 360 has the "gumby" headstock and sometimes I catch myself admiring the thinner 60's style headstocks. I can't complain too much though, as I got this 360 for the price of a used 330.

Mmmmm... Good question, mate. I must confess, I've never seen one quite that low. Best I've done was $900, and that was for a new 620 Jetglo model back in 2003 or so. Save your pennies for a while. You can occasionally find decent used 330's for around a grand. Surf on Tempest, which allows you to look at Craigslists all over the USA at once. If you're in the UK, I bet it works there too.

modfather1965 I don’t know why? You absolutely nailed the sound and gave all the options on different ways to play the song. Although a simple tune in theory, It’s a difficult number to play authentically, which I originally tried to approach a very long time ago and failed. Very well said... Anyone who listens to and then writes their own music has been influenced by what they've experienced previously. Sometimes it's more obvious and significant (i.e., conscious and intentional), other times much less so, but human beings learn by imitation. I too heard the Hollidays and ITC similarity when I was young and thought I was the first one to make the connection.😆 Similar as the chord structure on paper is, the main theme as played in those two songs is actually quite different, isn't it.

I prefer toasters too, in terms of tonal variation, and the look... That said, the high gains are fab to reproduce Jam tones (of course), I've recently discovered.

If you're implying that he should call it a tremolo, then you and Leo Fender are / were wrong. It's been gone over many times, vibrato is modulation of pitch, tremolo is modulation of volume. Since they were labelled incorrectly on Fender amps, the misconception has stuck.

Grahame... That's all really cool, mate. I've only had one Lambretta--a 1959 LD 125 that hardly ran. I picked it up in Mizzoula, Montana for $750. Should have kept it and refinished it in ballet pink, but I eventually sold it. I've had several Vespas; currently have a '63 GL, which is a wonderful scooter, but of course, I want a GS one day. Carnaby Street is indeed touristy as hell, but for a mod Yank like me, it's something of a Mecca. The clothing is, of course, simply to capitalize on the revival phenomenon going on. Guess I help it out some each time I buy Lambretta gear, or Ben Sherman, for that matter. I prefer vintage gear... Thanks so much for chiming in. Good to have a Brit's perspective on things mod, though it really all originated over here...;-)
