Making the difficult decision about which of my lever guns would be the last to give up. Tough choice to make with all these wonderful Winchesters, Marlins, etc.
Remember, value, rarity, ammo expense, beauty, history, etc. are not part of the criteria in these videos. It's just what do I think would be the best all-around choice for all the types of shooting I might WANT to do or NEED to do now and in the future.

My great grandfathers lever action 30-30 Winchester that he bought out of the Sears and Roebucks catalog was the envy of my father and uncles for them growing up, so when my great grandfather passed it down to me before I could even walk, they were all a little sour. I still love shooting that rifle and it is one of my most prized possessions. Beautiful firearm

For where I live, what I hunt and needs of security, the last lever I would give up would be a 44 mag or 357 mag. I could keep a favorite revolver for the same ammo, with versatility of two cartridges each and feel like I have all the bases covered. Plus I reload for both. A purely practical answer, as I'm not getting rid of my levers!
@theZombieAdrift
@theZombieAdrift 2 жыл бұрын
Bingo, that was my thoughts as well. Guide gun length lever, and a roughly revolver chambered in the same, probably 44 mag for me for the extra spice - versatility unmatched imo - SHTF setup, hunting, defense, ammo availability and size/weight - only thing I'd consider otherwise might be a straight up guide gun, just because I love me some. 45-70 gov

@@Albatross0913 yeah they are outdated but they are just beutiful like you said. I just love old weapons or atleast old modells. But i trust my leaver action 100% nonetheless. But i mean i buy most of my gund just because i like them and i don't care if they are outdated, they need to look greate, shoot greate and feel greate. But if i would need to choose a gun for selfdefence for example i would probably choose a more modern gun but i mean they do their job so if you like them and want one not only to shoot on the range you can be sure it is not neccesarely a bad choise.
@Albatross0913
@Albatross0913 Жыл бұрын
@@kuessebrama what matters for self-defense doesnt depend so much on what hun you're using as it does on how familiar you are with it. If you spend your time training with a .357 lever action and dont know your way around an AR-15 the lever action is going to be a much better choice for you. It's all about how well you've trained with your weapon of choice. I personally have a .357 SA for my home defense and I know my way around that gun than I do my sister's S&W for example. Self-defense is all about training.

"randyjon224," Just like hunting -- for serious, INSTANTANEOUS home protection you've already levered a round into the chamber and gently lowered the hammer into half cock or all the way down and applied the crossbolt safety or tang safety into 'safe' setting (depending on century your reliable lever action was manufactured or year's model it was designed after re safety feature(s). The sound of expediently pulling back the hammer may very well be so quiet it may NOT be the second to the last sound the felon [ever] hears. For as long as sound movies have been made, 1927 -- , directors consistently and mindlessly film the 'hero' or the 'bad guy' cock their carbine's / rifle's lever before shooting, which is preposterous in most potential life-and-death situations [or hunting scenarios] where 'readiness' and common sense prevails. Thank you, hickok45.

I've had the pleasure of owning a number of Winchester levers. My absolute favorite was the 1907 25 35 with 28" octagon barrel & flip up rear sight. Incredibly accurate, smooth action & light recoil due to the heavy barrel. Sadly sold it in 2006 due to divorce. I still have my 9422M, also an excellent rifle.

It is amazing that you speak of loading issues in 357 lever guns. I have found the same difficulties in the SASS world. The 44s and 45s never have such difficulties … smooth as butter; but, the 357s are another story. My 1873 is specific to cartridge length, yes; but, slicker than me. My 92 is the same. We have had feed problems with Marlins; however, they don’t like 44 Special; but feed when loaded in 44 Mag cases (not a problem with the 92s.

The only problem I see with a lever gun in .45 LC is the anemic rim on the cartridge. That narrow rim is the reason Winchester never made a repeater in that caliber. That is the primary reason for the 44-40 or 44WCF cartridge. Had the .45LC been acceptable, Winchester would have made rifles in that caliber, including the Model 92., in the 19th century. Yeah, I know that the modern brass case is less likely to tear off the base of the cartridge on ejection, but the original .45 Colt casing was certainly prone to it.

Thanks for the great info here, as I am looking at getting a lever action gun soon. Grew up hunting with a model 94 Winchester in .32 special. I do however love the idea of getting one in .357, because both my everyday carry gun and hunting revolver are the same caliber. This would really come in handy with cowboy action shooting, being able to load my rifle and revolver without worrying about mixing up ammo. Keep calm and shoot on!

@@arifsarikayaI bought a rossi model 92 in 45 long colt for $550 back in February at a gun show. I love it. The only thing that kinda sucks about it is the insane price of 45 long colt. If I were you I'd go with a 357 magnum, just because of the price of ammo. Just know that the guys trying to sell rossi's for $800 are ripping people off.

Mine would have to be my grandfathers 38/55 Marlin. It was his favourite, and talked about how many deer he had killed with it, and that it was a heavy hitting, good brush gun for deer compared to a 30/30. I also have his like new 30/30 Winchester, but love the old Marlin and it would top the list.

That would be a tough choice, thought you might go with the 86. Have a buddy with a nice Winchester collection. Was able to fondle his 66 rifle, 86 and shoot his 92. Definitely need to add some more to my collection. Thanks for sharing Hickok!

Couldn't go wrong with any of those. I'm partial to 357 myself. Always impressed with how fast those little guys get to the target. I'll bet you've put more rounds through that 45 than all the others put together. Or, maybe I've just watched those videos more so it seems like it.

I had a Marlene guide rifle with micro groove 45/70 only problem grooves would fill up then tend to loose accuracy I pasted it down. I did use and had a 32 special octagon barrel curved but plate , great shooter but times were hard and mom need cash to keep me going back in the day. I knew the fellow that had it but he would never sell it. The story on the 32 compared to the 30-30 there were many Thanks for the show brought back memories

My choice would be 357 magnum/38 special. Versatility is the main reason, but also because a wide variety of factory ammo is (sometimes) available. Plus, my favorite handguns are 357/38, so one type of ammunition fits all. Plenty powerful and accurate.

Lever action was always more interesting than younger bolt action models.You can shoot lever gun as fast as semi auto gun if you are good with it. No way to shoot near as fast with bolt. Under heavy stress lever wins, too bad it didnt got developed further and added the magazine.

you will never fire a lever gun as fast as a semi auto, which can be fired as fast as 500-600 rounds per minute with practice and trigger discipline, check out some garand thumb videos

...I just bought a new large pistol grip lever for my ORIGINAL Marlin Guide Gun with the ported barrel which my late, wonderful wife bought me waay back ca. 2008 - I also bought a Boyd's pistol grip stock. My stock id the original straight one - but Ranger Point Precision never seemed to have the large STRAIGHT lever so made the command decision to change the buttstock...I'll keep the original parts...that Guide Gun is worth serious dinero these days...
