In 2012, a brawl on a Phoenix, Arizona train was stopped by a man with a katana going by the name Kairo Seijuro. After being interviewed by local TV, he became a viral meme online, gaining the nicknames "Light Rail Avenger" and "Subway Samurai." However, a man claiming to be his brother uploaded videos showing his dark side. This is the story of what happened to Kairo.

No the only subway we have in Phoenix is the sandwich store. That incident was in the light rail - what major metro areas that don't care about public transit have to look like they do. The funniest thing is the drivers area which consists of a lever he can use to make it go faster or slower and a screen showing the mph that starts to go nuts if he exceeds 30mph. Fun fact: the week it opened many cars crashed into despite the fact that the roads were torn up for like 2 years while they built the track so it's not like an extremely slow train in the middle if the street should have been a huge surprise.

I am Japanese and I'd like to pitch in on the significance of Japanese naming. Seijiro is an old name that are seldom used in modern Japan. It was more appropriate in the Meiji era and early on. Much like Seijiro, Tomegoro, Misohachi, Yojirobe, and etc name that you may be familiar, all those names are retired naming reserved to reflect old Japan through stories and fables.

@@ChicDead26 A lot of people drown because their body simply couldn't go any farther. Panicking makes it harder. Falling overboard in dangerous bodies of water can still kill people who have pfd's on, we have many cases here at the end of the Mississippi River each year of people falling overboard and drowning, even with pfd's on.

Actually a pretty tragic ending for someone who was clearly mentally ill from a young age. There are always a few kids around who were bullied seeking solace in anime and fantasy worlds but others take it over the top. Kairo obviously being one of those unhinged types, allowed his delusions of grandeur to engulf him so completely they became his means of self preservation and identity in a world he probably felt had betrayed him or couldn't understand his ways. The thought of being some master swordsman and the obvious delusional mental state most likely were the driving force behind his abusive behavior if the stories his "brother" claimed were factual. The way he threatened a business owner over being told he couldn't carry a sword inside is a good example of that. Honestly he's lucky he never had police question his motives because he seemed like the type that would have tried attacking them and ended up being shot dead over his own stupidity.

It would've been a disaster. Last time someone cut a body of water in half was by someone praying to god, causing it to stay up for days to let some people to the other side of the river. If Kaizo did that there wouldn't even be water on earth for months and we would be living in a mad max like world until it rained undrinkable salt water filled with all types of marine lifeforms for years!

He didnt fall off the kayak. The kayak drifted and he tried to catch up to it swiming. I guess dedicating so much time and effort to the blade means sacrificing other skills like swimming. His death is a testament of his skill and talent for the blade.

The irony is that it was the weight of that sword, either in lb-age or sentimentality, that ultimately led to his death. So in many ways he was correct because if he didn't chase after it after he capsized his kayak he'd have definitely caused some sort of trouble. Somewhat of a reverse monkey's paw situation.

You're right, Sophia. My cousin died about 8 years ago. It was 2 years that nobody bothered messaging FB about it, so I finally did. About a week later it was memorialized. I don't know what happened on their end, or if they contacted other family members.

In high school I had a friend named Bryan who was obsessed with Anime. He would tell us grandiose stories that were obviously fake and would claim to have friends most of which were named after Anime characters. He would talk of his friends killing people with swords and shit like that. It was really sad, we never called him out on it cuz we felt bad.

Only his sword (and the teenage girl he was with) survived the rough waters that day. It's poetic and speaks volumes of this great samurai. He knew his soul would transcend this plane of existence, but his sword wouldn't. So he selflessly secured that katana to his kayak, so it could someday connect with a new master. RIP Subway Samurai... only the good die young.

You can meet some crazy / kinda cool people in the park. There’s this one dude who lives In my neighborhood who like walks all day every day throughout the neighborhood, always talking to himself almost like he’s holding a conversation with other people but it’s just him. I have chatted with him a bit before though usually he won’t notice if you call out to him . Apparently he’s been doing it for at least a few years and knows a lot about little changes in the neighborhood and surrounding parks and forests

Oh? A story about somebody I actually interacted with. Edit: he used to drop by my local collectors market. We'd known about his train incident and he seemed pretty cool until you actually talked to him. He had a bad case of word vomit, it was like he was saying stuff just because it sounded cool. My dad who would come in with me told me to avoid him. He'd just hover around with the sword and never actually buy anything. He'd also freak out If you asked if the sword was real. One day I came in and a display case of transformers was cracked. Apparently he had banged the handle into the case. They said he was allowed to come back but freaked out when they told him to not to bring the sword in. He had a real meltdown about it. I think it's also because the store used to be pretty relaxed with local rules (there was a time where I'd buy stuff And they didn't tax me, needless to say that changed) oh, and I'm pretty sure the 16 year old apprentice was with him too. (She would have been about 14/15 around this time) I had no clue he actually died. I could have sworn he still hung around the local geek scene.

It wasn't discarded, it left on its own accord. But it was a clean breakup and they still talk from time to time. edit: also, amalgamation implies a combination of elements from different sources, unless said amalgamation would have accrued discarded residue over time, containing different 'aspects of Asian', for which an exception could be made. edit2: OMG so many likes, I would like to thank my parents and the many mentors both on- and offline. Interesting to see coverage of Kairo from a couple years after his passing. I knew him personally, I had visited his apartment in Tempe, and hung out with him on occasion (ate food, Japanese obv). The last year he was alive was the weirdest and unsurprisingly resulted in a visit from the FBI in regards to him. Fun times!

@@jakethehyena9327 nothing much more than what was already shared, I heard a lot of the same stories from him. There were a couple videos on his Facebook of him showing off his sword against a gallon of milk and saying some very borderline terroristic things, to which I messaged him to warn him he could be investigated for, and agreed to a visit in Clearlake just to catch up and hang out. That discussion found me being investigated and subsequently visited by the local FBI office, which was fun. What was great was being asked if I knew who he was by his real name and going, "Who?" as I've only ever known him as Kairo Seijuro. There's a small group of some of his family and friends, who think he may still be alive, or that if he's really dead, it was murder. Though I have no proof any which way, I have my own suspicions so I'm always looking out when walking around to see if I ever spot him again.

@@jakethehyena9327 well just checking sources again, they did recover his body about a week after the incident. I knew the initial searches came up with nothing, didn't really follow up much and kept distance because of the whole FBI thing, didn't even visit him like we had planned because of that visit. Should have either way, he was weird sure, but he was generally harmless unless you were attacking him or an innocent.

A funny thing about this guy. There's a tabletop RPG (Like D&D) called "Mutants & Masterminds" that is about super heroes, and I used him as an NPC hero for years. He actually became one of the most powerful characters in that setting, like something out of an anime. Our group called him the Lightrail Ronin.

His samurai spirit did not allow him to surrender his sword and soul to the river and gave his life to save it, we lost a proud warrior that day. He held his sword with pride till the last breath, only screaming "NO" to the gods to not separate him from his love, his protector, his soul....but even gods can envy such a great hero, and ignored the plee.
