Katherine Hepburn. Peter O'Toole. Anthony Hopkins. Timothy Dalton. Eleanor of Aquitaine, Henry II, Richard the Lionheart and King John. The best melodrama of all time, and a cracking good movie.

This movie is awesome! I was 18 when it was released I just turned 74 today! Peter O'Toole as Henry: "God I'm the oldest man I know! I've got a decade on the Pope"! He was 50! LOL!

One of my favorite movies of all time! The character of the messenger is actually William Marshal. He's another of the period's most interesting people and deserves a movie in his own right. He embodied the knightly values of honor, courage and loyalty like none other. He served five different English kings, and even rising to become regent during the minority of King John's son Henry III. The bishop presiding over his funeral declared that he was the greatest knight who ever lived.

Yeah, I knew I'd made a mistake in calling him "Henry's Marshal" and never went back to correct it. But YES that guy deserves his own movie.

Sadly, I must point out that William Marshal did not serve any English kings, only French kings of England. Richard Coeur d'Lyon "The Lion Heart" didn't even speak any English. In fact, the English have not had an English King or Queen since October 1066, when Harold Godwinson died at the Battle of Hastings. But, nit picking aside, William Marshal was a very interesting character, and should have his own movie. Until that happens, I'll continue to enjoy this version of The Lion in WInter whenever possible.

@@aivehn Can I just say that it brings me great joy that my dumb little video inspires debate about William Marshall (though I admittedly misspoke in the video itself)?

"I'm 50 now. Good God, boy, I'm the oldest man I know!" Yeah... I know what you mean, Henry. Been one of my favorites forever, too. Brilliant, brilliant. And as much an ideal for a writer as a challenge to an audience member. Ah, to see this one done so well on stage! Delicious schemers, one and all.

The funny thing about that line is that Eleanor was 10 years older than Henry, both in the casting and in real life.

When I first saw this film I was in my 20s, 50 seemed ancient. Now I'm 60 Henry is just a boy at 50.

I never really understood the family dynamic the first time I saw this movie. It was on TCM one night and I wanted to see Anthony Hopkins and Timothy Dalton. Moving ahead many decades later ( ha ha), I see this movie very differently. I love it. I am a new fan of House of Dragon ,but nothing is like A Lion in Winter.

I couldn't understand the politics of the family at all as a teen. Which made me rewatch it a dozen times. Very much like Philadelphia Story at the other end of Hepburn's career.

I remember watching this movie with my maw maw who was from the Aquitaine but I didn't know that was a real place. I had no idea what was going on in this movie and I thought she was telling me that her paw paw was king Arthur and he had pulled the sword out the stone. I still don't know what she meant but I know she really admired Audrey Hepburns depiction of Eleanor

I've got a decade on the Pope. Henry's bed is Henry's province, he can people it with sheep for all I care.

Your knowledge and passion for cinema really makes me want to see films that on the surface I have no interest in. I even caught the last 40 minutes of the film about that guy who wrote all the Beatles songs in an alternate reality (Help or Yesterday?) and watched it until the end.

To be honest I had very little interest in that Danny Boyle film myself, and only watched it because we had a long flight. I am happy if I inspire anybody else to check out movies they wouldn't normally watch.

The best compliment I've ever had on this channel was a high school friend I hadn't spoken to for decades who called me up to say he'd watched "the Best Years of Our Lives" because of my White Christmas review.

@@paulthomas3247 that's a really lovely thing to have happened. I remember Googling Kara Hui one day and one of the hits was your video about her, I think for me it was one of those moments when I realised I wasn't the only person who truly knew just how special she is, it was a revelation.

Big fan of O’Toole. Would love to hear your thoughts on The Stunt Man. For my money, his finest performance.

Good possibility. The Richard & Geoffrey intro scenes are a mystery to me. So intense and inscrutable.
