The plot of Paul's main storyline/arc *seems* very straight-forward though, "The liberation of a people and their land from being exploited for its resources". She's not saying people who've spent hundreds of hours sinking their teeth into the intricacies of the world *think* it's simple. Let's get some media literacy, pls 😅

i did not like the changes they made to jessica in part 2 compared to jessica in the books. after drinking the water of life in the movie, she appears to be an almost emotionless one dimentional character only driven to turn paul into the lisan-alghaib. instead in the books we get one big emotional moment with her paul and gurney where jessica accepts chani and tells paul to marry her if that makes him happy even at the risk of throwing away thousands of years of bene gesserit planning. Jessica basically tells paul that he has a choice in his life and not everything is consumed by destiny or outside plotting. That was one of the best moments in the book and showed that Jessica was a multidimentional character that actually could choose too, instead of following a plan or a prophecy.

I agree with you that Jessica lost some of her depth in the film. Generally, the film eschews some elements that actually contribute to the complexity of Dune, such as CHOAM or the Mentats. I can imagine there are film-economic reasons for that. After all, the film is already nearly three hours long even without these elements. So, there are some things that fans of the books might wish for but are omitted. The same could apply to Jessica.

Okay as a film only watcher, this detail did not bother me at all with the entire plot. It's soapy . What mattered is that Paul told Chani that he will love her forever. That's a true testament of his love for Chani, uninfluenced by his mother. Jessica's stoic icy 1D character is perfect. I actually watched the Part 2 first the other day and then got home and watched Part 1 on Netflix. I highly recommend that as the way to watch Denis' Dune. 😊 Can't wait for Part 3. I wish they make a lot of Dune movies. It's such a treat for history and scifi-adventure geeks like me.

As with any film adaptation, some major liberties are taken by Denis in Dune1&2... The Jessica of the films is only partly written in the book, and Chani's movie arc is much less a reflection of Herbert's character. Therefore, the interactions of the 2 are seriously diff from page to celluloid, but are glossed over in this otherwise very interesting vid analysis!

Dune Part Two(B+)l have never read any of the books but via the original 1984 film adaptation(which l did see,l find it pretty weird)and current films,l’m intrigued by this Universe,esp the Benne Gesserit,Mentats and Guild… l was fascinated by the individual personality changes in both Lady Jessica and Paul once ingesting The Water of Life,it was though they were being driven by forces beyond their control 🤔
@junaesque
@junaesque 2 ай бұрын
I am a bit disappointed that we didn’t get to see the importance of Mentats and the Guild in the films but it’s also understandable as it could get too complicated for viewers who don’t have any knowledge about Dune. The water of life really gave the impression that they were controlled by the memories of their ancestors. In the books it is more described as an awakening of their own mind and even though they see all the other memories, it is their own choice to act. The water of life just gave them access to all the knowledge and mental capabilities
@lauriethompson740

@@junaesque ' it is their own choice to act' - that is reminiscent of the Jungian idea of individuation. and the 'the memories of their ancestors' of the Jungian idea of the 'collective unconscious'. The process of individuation is on the one hand the psychotherapist guiding and training, like the sisterhood, but in the final analysis you must take control and become fully who you are as an individual, balancing the forces within you by gaining control over the unconscious, not to suppress it, but to transform it to best effect, a kind of 'psychic alchemy'. From what I can gather, Frank Herbert was heavily influenced by Jung and certain Jungians

The selection of the actress for Lady Jessica is the part that really just pissed me off the most in this Dune. She's so horribly ;NOT what anyone would call a Duke quality mistress/wife/concubine. She was weak, vapid and then had seconds of strength. She really just never pulled off the power that the LADY Jessica should have embodied. One one of all the Lady Jessica's ever lived up to this roll imho.

The Bene Gesserit to me, is first and foremost a Priesthood and I think the lesson in Dune, shows us why Women should never occupy positions of high power, and indeed, we have many examples of that today in the real world. From Arden of New Zealand to Ursula of the EU, to Nuland of the USA, and Madelline Albright who told the Rwanadans to go to hell in so much words when they came begging the US for help, even telling them, the US doesn't have friends, only interests.

Rubbish opinion. There are also plenty of men who screw up the planet. People as individuals can be virtuous or not, it is not really a matter of the gender. Seems you got a sexist cherry picked argument, come back with something more constructive. Or don’t comment at all :P

Lmao what does their sh*t have to do with them being women? Bene Gesserit are messed up for different reasons. Modern political elite is messed up due to highly unequal and corrupt structure of modern politics. But I guess misogynists will always blame women, no matter what 😂
