Do you think that you know everything about “The Little Mermaid”? You might have seen the Disney princess movie, but only a few of you have actually read the original fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen. We have to tell you that there is no love story and no Prince Charming because we are only showing you the messed up origins of “The Little Mermaid.” Make sure you watch this video until the end to know if Ariel lives happily ever after.
The beginning is really similar to what we saw in the Disney princess movie as Ariel was fascinated by the human world. As soon as she got old enough to go near the ships, she fell in love with a man and thought that he would be her Prince Charming. And unlike what we saw in the movie, she took much more time to get to know him before making the biggest decision of her life.
If you watched “The Little Mermaid,” you know that Ariel exchanged her voice for a pair of legs. But in the original fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen, the deal that she made with the sea witch was more terrifying. The sorceress herself said that the young woman was dumb. But you’ll have to watch this video to know more about that crazy agreement.
Stay tuned to hear more about the messed up origins of the little mermaid like how the young girl suffered from the deal with the sea witch, how the Prince called her, who he finally ended up with, and if she ever lived happily ever after. Which fairy tale story do you prefer? Don’t be shy to answer in the comments section down below. We love to hear what you think!

Actually in the original story, Ariel doesn’t just throw the knife away at the end. She thrusts it into her body, and *then* materializes into the water.

No, she didn't kill herself with the knife. She threw it into the sea and where it fell, the water became red like blood. Then the little mermaid jumped in the water as well and became a daughter of the Air. Still soulless, but after 300 years of good deeds, the daughters of the Air earn themselfs a Soul and can Go the Heaven just like human souls do... (The original mermaid fairytale is my favorite children's book and still standing in my bookshelf!!😉)

My grandma told me and my sister of the original fairy tale when we were kids (I'm Danish) even though it's incredibly sad. I think it's healthy to tell kids of these tales. Sometimes life' just not fair, even though you try your hardest. Hans Christian Andersen was one angsty author, but one we're damn proud of!

I used to read these old fairy tales when I was young, and though they were disturbing they did offer some serious life lessons. The Little Mermaid was an integral part of my life and reminded me that doing the right thing - even after doing the wrong thing for selfish reasons, is the most noble. She chose to die rather then commit murder because her love was stronger, and she was rewarded for her sacrifice.

What I think what's more darker in the original The Little Mermaid is a storm scene from the book. In the original story, the mermaid thought the storm was so much fun and amazing, she did pay attention to how the prince and sailors were in terrible danger. Unlike the Disney(where Ariel saves and grab Prince Eric right away), In the original story, when the mermaid saw the prince was trying to keep his head above water, he began to sink and drowning, she was so happy and excited that he's in the water and she thought he's going to visit the sea kingdom, it took her few minutes to realize if he was underwater, the prince will die(because humans can't breathe underwater) This is one of the reasons why the prince never recognizes or ever saw the mermaid as his savior because he's already fully unconscious when the mermaid got to him and it took her forever to realize he's in danger.
@arleneparaiso
@arleneparaiso 5 жыл бұрын
I love the original story. I watched it over and over when I was a child. I cried when she died, but her love was so pure for the prince. She was willing to die for him and allow him happiness. She sacrificed all for him. So in a way she's a Christ figure. Very beautiful. It's not a fairytale where everything works out in a human way. But more like real life where things don't go as planned and you're faced with a decision to be selfish or selfless. And she chose selfless and ended up winning the better reward of eternal life. I read something from the book called my way of life and it goes like this, "The task before our heart is not to hold a fickle lover but to spend itself." In the original story of the little mermaid, the little mermaid does just that period.

I don't know why but I seem to Like the older version of the story than the newest. It's less romantic and although it was really dum of the mermaid to make that decision, I think the story had a much better ending than getting married to some random prince.

The Little Mermaid was my favorite growing up because I read the original story when I was 4. It took me awhile to understand when she turned to a sea foam (english is not my first language.) But when I did I cried a lot and hated the prince.

I had the original mermaid vhs and still do. I watched it as a child.. it always and forever will make me cry.. that dolphin and her sisters trying to save her.. though in the movie I don’t think she ever showed that she was going through this pain.. but then it didn’t explain when she turned into bubbles either I assumed she just died.. that last part was completely new to me about her soul living 300 years.

The original fairy tales by Hans Christian Anderson or the Grimm brothers define my childhood, I only started watching some Disney movies when I was around 12 or something because everyone knows them. Personally, I think you can learn way more from those original fairy tales than the Disney movies.

I kinda like this story better. When the Prince found her and became close to her, he still didn't like her. He didn't feel that close to her even though she was the actual one that saved him. Instead he fell for another person whom he thought was the saver but in reality just liked her looks and wanted to marry her. The little mermaid was hurt for all she had risked for him but still wouldn't turn to the dark side, for her love was pure. She got her happy ending. She didn't need the prince but instead enjoyed her life for as long as she lived. She was never hurt again but was given the opportunity to cherish everything else and then she was able to live in the everlasting kingdom of heaven. She may have never gotten her "man" or "prince" but got everlasting love from herself. And was able to accept herself for who she was. She was the only one that she really needed to love in the end. After all, she sacrificed her body (tongue and tail) for someone she didn't know. Then she learned to love herself no matter what she had. And to know not to give it up so easily for she was all she had. Everyone else might leave her, but she could never leave herself. Sorry that it's so long hahaha.

Hans Christian Andersen/ HC Andersen, is Danish (Denmark is a small country). And I’m from Denmark. Every danish person know that story and that the Disney movie is copied from that. In Copenhagen (the main city in Denmark) they have a statue of a mermaid on a stone which is supposed to be “the little mermaid”. At 1:00 there’s a pic of it. :D

In the old 1950s movie Hans Christian Andersen, starring Danny Kaye, there was a Little Mermaid ballet. This was when I first learned that Hans Christian Andersen wrote The Little Mermaid. This was years before Disney's movie-which lived up to all Disney standards,including drastic alteration of the story for the,"modern," audience.

There's a different story which is A LOT more disturbing She lived underwater and had 8 oysters clamped to her tail to show her reputation. Same thing with the prince falling into the water and almost drowning, saved him and blah blah. She tried to ask the witch for a pair of legs, and she accepted, in return for her voice. Not just her voice, but had to have her tongue cut out so she could never speak again. She was given a mission to plunge a knife into the heart of the prince otherwise she'd turn to sea foam. But she could not meet the prince because he didn't know who saved him and thought it was another girl instead. The little mermaid failed, turned into sea foam, and died GrEaT stoRy 10/10 👏👌
